Here we are again…last day of the month. I usually end August with “Whew!”, and a sense of gratitude that it and its brutal weather are finally a memory. However, this year we’ve been blessed with cooler temperatures and more rain. I have to admit…it could have been worse. But I’m still happy to see September on the horizon. It has always been one of my favorite months and I love fall. I love sweatshirts. I love colorful leaves. I love planting bulbs. Okay, I do NOT love pumpkin spice except in pies, but I’ll ignore that if you like it.
Yesterday we went to the wildlife refuge and saw some of the first signs of fall out there. The fields have been plowed and planted for the winter geese. Much of the debris from the flooding is gone. The roads are being repaired. We also observed a few birds that we haven’t seen since last fall. Everything migrates and changes and evolves at the refuge. That’s what makes it so interesting.
The hummingbirds are still active, but I know I need to take some time this week to really enjoy them because they will soon be gone for another season.
Fall is a good time to clean closets and make donations to charity. Clean your freezers, cupboards and pantries, check expiration dates and make a list of basics to stock up on before winter power outages. Also check extra water, battery, and light bulb supplies.
I also like to make any major purchases in the fall. We’re planning to buy a new mattress and a recliner next week. I find that fall is a good time for us to take deliveries and make changes before we “settle in” for the winter. We’re old!
Hope you enjoy these photos and end the month with a happy heart.
