Our rain gauge wasn’t ready for the amount of rain that fell in our area these past few days. At the time that I bought it I never envisioned getting more than 5” of rain from one storm. The eight inches we actually got seems like a fantasy, but is still only half of what some towns in the state received. Roads have been closed, power lost, homes damaged, pets and livestock killed. Still…this has only been a glimpse of what our neighbors in North and South Carolina have suffered.
Sometimes a glimpse of crisis, a few days of inconvenience, is all we need to appreciate our blessings and to be more understanding of the plight of others. My grandmother was fond of saying, “There but for the grace of God go I”. Yes, indeed. Our state will clean up and the recovery for most will be months. The recovery for our southern friends may be years…or not at all. Let’s not forget this glimpse we’ve had of their situation. Let’s not forget them as the news of the next crisis comes. And let’s not waste money funding projects that merely boost someone’s ego instead of repairing roads and building new homes.
