I’ve been reading Proverbs this week and a little word demanded my attention this morning as I read Proverbs 28:12
When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.
The Bible does not promise that our lives will always be filled with peace and prosperity, but we are assured that God will guide us through anything if we have faith and trust. We are promised that we will not be tested or tempted beyond endurance, but with that promise must come the understanding that we will be tempted and tested.
And Proverbs 28:12 tells us that there will be times when the wicked rise to power. Not if, but when. I fear that time will be 2016.
I’ve never been more fearful about the future of our nation than I am today.
I’ve never been more ashamed of our so-called leaders.
I’ve never heard such expressions of disrespect and contempt uttered so indifferently and so often by so many people.
I’ve never been more mystified by the actions of other people.
I’ve never been more uncertain about what “one nation under God” really means to us.
And I’ve never felt as utterly frustrated as I am by my choices in the upcoming election. To be asked to choose between the “lesser of two evils” is to have no choice at all.
However, as I read and prayed this morning I came to the conclusion that I must do what we must always do: have faith and trust God. So I turned to Daniel, chapter 2:
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
Whatever happens this fall will change our country in ways that will undoubtedly tempt and test us. But when bad times come, God will guide us through them.
