Vigorous Clean-Up Campaign

The Cleaner Caddo Committee at their meeting Tuesday took definite steps toward making Caddo a cleaner and better town. They have appointed the second week in April as clean-up week in Caddo, with separate days as follows:

Sunday- Church Day

Monday- Weed Day. Not many weeds, but kill them while they are young.

Tuesday- front Yard Day. Clean up the front yards.

Wednesday- Back Yard Day. Clean the backyards, lots, and barns.

Thursday- Paint and Whitewash Day. A little paint will cover a multitude of ugliness.

Friday- Burning Day. Burn all the trash, weeds, grass, barn yard refuse. Provision will be made by the committee and the city to haul off all accumulated refuse that will not burn.

Saturday- Children’s Day. The boys will be given a prize for the cleanest alley. A committee of the Club will inspect the alleys of the town and award the prize Saturday. This is a good chance for the boys to do some good work.

Friday night, April 3^rd, and Saturday afternoon there will be a special film run at the Electric Theatre about trash and how flies are bred. No advance in price.

The Caddo National Bank has for the purpose of lessening the fly evil contributed 500 fly swatters which will be distributed Saturday, April 4^th. Be sure to get one and use it.

The Civic Club will take the matter of oat straw stacked up with the county health officers. These stacks ought either to be burned, scattered on the ground or baled. They breed more flies than any other one thing.

Every citizen of Caddo and surrounding country ought to do everything possible to aid the ladies in their campaign for a cleaner and healthier town.

Gary and Belinda Davison announce the closing of Craighead’s store in Caddo, Oklahoma. The couple will end their proprietorship on December 18, 2021.

            “We want to thank our community for all the help and support offered to us throughout the past twenty years,” says Belinda. “It was a rocky start with the collapsing of the storefront, but we will always remember the town coming together and holding a fundraiser to help us get back on track. We are thankful that we were able to repair and restore the building to keep the Craighead’s tradition alive.”

            The Davisons also want to thank family, friends and all the individual townspeople who worked alongside them to rebuild the store after their big setback. “We especially want to thank James Wingfield and Wesley Crawford whose hard work made the store complete once again,” says Gary.

            The store’s beginning can be traced back to 1938 to the Craighead family. Through many years of hard work and determination, the Craighead family created a five and dime that captured the hearts of adults and children alike. The store became a generational tradition for the townspeople of Caddo.

            The building has been purchased by Drew and Kayla Harbin of Harbinger Beer Company. The Harbins say they plan to leave the Craighead name on the front of the building and a nostalgic flair for everyone to experience on the inside. They say you should watch the space for some big plans coming soon.

            “Gary and I leave feeling proud that we can pass the legacy on to younger individuals with dreams of their own and a willingness to invest in the future of our town,” says Belinda Davison. “It’s not easy to keep a small business going. They take a lot of hard work, and are so vital to small towns. We want to encourage everyone to support Drew and Kayla...and all of our local businesses.”

            Shoppers will still have a few months to shop and grab a piece of old Craighead’s history. The store will reopen starting September 24 with a storewide sale. Store hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

            “We want to invite everyone to take advantage of the savings we will be offering throughout the store. This will be a one time sale, so don’t pass up this chance to pick up a Craigheads memento,” says Belinda Davison.

            The sale includes 30% off all Melissa and Doug items and 40% off all remaining merchandise. Shoppers will also get an additional 10% off of purchases over $100.00. All vintage merchandise, store displays and fixtures will be priced as marked. All sales are final. Select fixtures will stay with the building.

Convicted on Two Charges

W.J. Moon Fined $300 and

Given Two Months in Jail

            In county court at Caddo last week, W. J. Moon, proprietor of the leading hotel and one of the wealthiest* citizens of the town, was convicted of having whiskey in his possession with intent to violate the prohibition law, and was also convicted of selling intoxicants in violation of the law. On the first charge he was fined $250 and given thirty days in jail, and on the second he was fined $50 and given another thirty days, making a total of $300 in fines and a jail sentence of two months.

            The officers surmised Moon was selling booze for some time before he was detected. The getting of the evidence against him was a clever and a bold piece of work. Shortly after Jess Maloney was appointed deputy sheriff, he was dispatched to Caddo to work on the case. He was a stranger to Moon and when he put up at Moon’s hotel, Moon mistook him for a drummer (salesman).

            During the evening Moon told his new guest he could supply anything he cared to drink. An order was placed, but when a negro porter delivered the whiskey he was promptly arrested and spirited from the hotel.

            It was several hours before Moon knew of the arrest and that his new guest was a deputy sheriff.

            The officer learned from the negro the place in the hotel where the supply of booze was stored. During the night a search warrant was secured, and Deputy Sheriff Norman joined Deputy Maloney in a raid on the hotel early the next morning. The booze ______ and Moon was arrested. 300 Attend Annual Meeting of Caddo High Alumni Association

            Caddo, June 7 (Special)- The third annual meeting of the Caddo High School Alumni Association came to a close Sunday afternoon with another successful meeting to its credit.

            Approximately 300 people attended the reception, dance and Sunday morning services held in connection with the meeting. The reception and dance were held in the high school gymnasium Saturday night with music furnished by Carl Castell’s orchestra. Dances by Misses Sana Mae Schafer and Joy Heath, with vocal solos by Buck Spearman furnished the floor show for the evening.

        E.O. Shaw, superintendent of Sapulpa schools and former superintendent of schools here, was the speaker chosen for the Sunday morning service. Shaw served Caddo as its superintendent two different times.

            At the business meeting the same officers who have served the association the past three years were reelected. They include H. W. Sargent, president; G. G. Crossett, vice-president; Mary Adeline Boland, secretary-treasurer; C. L. Wood, corresponding secretary.

Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Dale were here Sunday from Antlers to see her mother Mrs. Barber.

T.C. Williamson is in Wilson N. Jones hospital in Sherman undergoing medical treatment.

Howard Cochran and Misses Ruth and Jean Cochran are home from a visit to New York.

Mrs. R. L. Pace accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pace home to Ft. Smith and is visiting there now.

Mr. and Mrs. Jake C. Davison were here from Fort Worth this week. They are moving soon to Austin, Texas.

Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Beard of route one announce the birth of a son, Gary Floyd, August 16 in a hospital in Durant.

Mr. and Mrs. Chapman and family of Grand Prairie, Texas, were guests of her sister Mrs. Karnes and family Sunday.

Mrs. L. M. Wood spent Saturday and Sunday in Wapanucka. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Payne brought her home Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Edward Smith and young son spent the past week in Caddo with relatives. He is in the Navy.

Lost: Ladies small coin purse on Buffalo Street between Caddo Herald office and Meadows. If found bring to the Herald office.

Mrs. John Wisdom and Mr. and Mrs. Grady Joines attended the funeral of Melvin Vest in Durant Wednesday. He died in England.

Rev. and Mrs. R. R. Reed were in Caddo a while Tuesday visiting old friends while enroute to Nebraska. He formerly was the Methodist pastor here.

Mrs. John Impson and son John, daughter, Rebekah, left Sunday to go to California, after a visit of two months with her mother. She will join her husband in Japan in a month or so.

Mr. and Mrs. Pat Hardy, Pat and Jan, LeRoy Downing, Miss Cherry Park, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Choate and Mr. and Mrs. John B. Poyner enjoyed a basket dinner and swimming party on the lake Wednesday evening.

Misses Margie Sue Fox, Linda Wood, Robbie Fern Sargent, Lanecia Dickey, Joyce and Betty Robinson, and Davey Call and Rev. Charles Puckett attended the Youth Fellowship district rally in Tishomingo Monday night.

Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Crossett, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Bates, and Mary J., LeRoy and Jerry Downing, and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Hardy, Pat, and Jan, spent Sunday in McAlester with Guy G. Crossett and family. It had been many years since all the Crossett family were together for a reunion.
