“A new study out of Yale University”…sounds impressive already doesn’t it?
“has determined that moderate use of alcohol and marijuana”…guess I’ll have to Google moderate use…
“lowered the GPA of college students”…Duh…did they spend money to figure that out? I could call a dozen moms and come to the same conclusion.
“Researchers”…Who? Teachers wasting time and money? Students choosing an easy thesis topic?
“The study tracked more than 1,100 students”…Seriously? Out of the 20 million students attending colleges across the nation they studied the equivalent of one high school graduating class?
“at two unnamed colleges in Connecticut” …I’m just guessing, but I think this limits their data, regardless of the purpose of the research.
“beginning with their first semester of freshman year”…So essentially high school seniors who are still confused, intimidated, and inexperienced college students.
“over the course of two years”…They couldn’t continue their research until the students graduated?
The researchers concluded that students who use drugs and alcohol waste time and don’t study as much. Drugs and alcohol affect concentration. Smoking marijuana can produce a sense of apathy. Students could bring up their GPAs by changing their habits. Students often enter college with an unrealistic idea of what is going on. The colleges need to do a better job of intervening and informing early before habits are formed….and
Wait for it….
Colleges will ultimately have to invest more funding and resources in prevention and education programs in order to see significant results…
