I bought a new purse yesterday. It’s a little nicer and bigger than the one I’ve been toting around this summer. I tend to carry a few more items in my purse during the school year so the change was necessary. No, I’m not one of those women who has a dozen purses and changes them to match outfits or occasions. I did that for a few years, but frankly found it exhausting. So now I’m a school year vs. summer purse kinda gal.
What I find amusing is that I simply can NOT buy a purse of any kind without thinking of my grandmother’s purse. I promise you that woman carried everything but the kitchen sink in her purse! You could mention that you needed ANYTHING, from a snack to tweezers to a magnifying glass or a needle and thread, and she would pull it out of that leather bag like a rabbit out of a magician’s hat. She even casually mentioned once that she carried a silver dollar that she’d had since childhood! She always kept a cloth handkerchief. She had extra quarters for vending machines. Cough drops, antiseptic cream, band aids, nail file, hair brush, mirror, hand cream, pocket knife, Rolaids, Lifesavers, tooth pick…all there somewhere within the depths of that bag. And she also had a huge wallet stuffed with receipts and cards and things she “might need”.
I’m not sure how she managed to carry her purse as often as she did. I tried it a few times and ended up with a sore arm. Of course she always made the point that if anyone tried to accost her she could knock them out cold with her purse!! I never doubted her.
My own purse seems a bit empty. I know I’m not prepared for every emergency. I know Gran would be a bit disappointed. But at least I can walk without leaning to one side…and if I really have an emergency I have something in my purse that Gran never had…a phone.
