I was working on a photo project at the dining room table this morning when I became aware of a familiar sound. Rain!! The pitter patter of rain is always such a welcome sound in the middle of summer. I got up and opened the front door for a few minutes and just enjoyed the sight and smell of the water.
About ten minutes after I returned to my task I thought I heard a limb scraping on the side of the house. Then I realized there isn’t a limb close enough to the house to even touch it! There is a bay window in the dining room, so I raised the blinds on one side to try to locate the source of the sound. You can imagine my surprise when I saw this sweet face looking back at me! I grabbed my camera from the table and snapped a few photos, thinking of course that my presence would send my little visitor scurrying off to the woods. No….
He/she would NOT leave and would NOT stop scratching and nibbling at the siding and the window sill. I went out to the nearby patio and made some noise. I threw a piece of dog food at it, thinking that the kibble was softer than a rock, but would still scare the raccoon enough to make it run. What was I thinking???? LOL He grabbed the dog food and ate it!!
The rain had stopped by then so I took a couple more pictures. Made some more noise. Definitely a stand-off!
I felt sorry for the little guy, but I couldn’t let him tear up the house. I didn’t recognize him as one of my regular dinner crowd- they are all older and bigger. He was obviously lost and needed to head back to his own territory. So, I finally turned on the hose and squirted water at him. He ran across the yard and scrambled up the bois d’ arc tree.
I keep telling you… I never know what will happen out here!
