Tom Clancy is gone. The prolific writer will no longer thrill readers with his detailed military plots and subplots. And as Gary pointed out, his death is just another reminder that money and fame cannot guarantee good health or a long life.
Clancy’s first novel, The Hunt for Red October, was a sensation for a while. Even President Reagan endorsed it!
I was working at Macy’s when the movie was released and I stood in a block-long line to see it. It was the first and only time in my life that I stood in line for more than ten minutes to see a movie. And about ten people ahead of me was our store manager! I was surprised to see her, but later learned that she was a big fan of Tom’s.
Always sad to say goodbye to an author, but this loss seems more personal than most. At least he left us a massive body of work to read and re-read. Rest in peace Mr. Clancy.
