Here is a little secret that you may not know about me. I’m a news junkie. Yep, totally addicted to watching the news- local, national, world, “talking heads”, even a little sports. I could watch news reports all day long. I usually have the news on at 4:30 so I can hear it while I write my blogs, catch up on email, FB, etc. I love to hear what is going on in the world, even if some of it is depressing or upsetting. The bad news makes me even more grateful for my peaceful little life.
I’ve always wanted to know what other people are doing and thinking. Even as a child I knew that everyone wasn’t like us and the world was filled with people who were having adventures and doing things more exciting than working in the cotton fields. And there were also people who didn’t have jobs or homes or food and made our poverty seem like luxury living. Watching the news kept me from wallowing in self pity or limiting my view of the world. The news also made me long to see other parts of the country!
This is one of my favorite times for news watching because so much of it is positive. I love to hear about people helping others and contributing to charities and buying toys for children. There are so many good people in the world, and throughout much of the rest of the year they are overlooked by the media.
Of course the news also gives me plenty of fodder for my blogs. Some people are just crazy! LOL Others have ideas and beliefs that I feel compelled to refute. They do things that serve as a warning to the rest of us- “don’t try this at home, or anywhere else”. And the news provides an overview of social changes that will eventually impact my life. It’s all interesting to an inquiring mind.
So, watch the Voice or the Duck Dynasty if you must. I’ll be watching the news…at least when I can wrest the remote away from my husband.
