I spent most of yesterday resting. Yes, really. We watched the Olympics. I read a few chapters of a book. We visited with my dad. We met with some friends for a brief discussion of a new community project. I did a little research. I printed some “first week” paperwork I need for school. I spent some time thinking and planning and praying. Summer is over. Let the games begin…
There is much to be learned from the Olympics that can be applied to school this year- motivation, dedication, perseverance, teamwork, loyalty, respect. But most of all, as I watched the events yesterday, I thought about the diversity represented. So many athletes are competing for the same prize, but each comes from a different background and has traveled a different path. Even those who win the gold often do so in ways that surprise and amaze us! Records are broken and new expectations arise for the next generation.
I hope we remember the games as our children enter school for another year of training and preparation for their goals. Each year it seems that we strive even harder for a “one size fits all” education. We seek solutions to our problems that will benefit the majority of children. All well and good. But let’s also remember that each child is different. They come from different backgrounds and must follow their own path. And some will reach their goals in ways that will surprise and amaze us!
