My grandmother, Beatrice Alexander Simmons, was born on April 29, 1908 (ought eight as she called it) and died on April 5, 2000. Though she is gone, she is hardly forgotten; I don’t think a week goes by that I don’t think about her in relation to something I’m doing or something I’ve discussed with one of my children. I had another sweet grandmother and great-grandmothers, but I was always geographically and emotionally closer to this woman than to my own mother.
