I said in the deep dark drudgery of winter that I would not complain about summer heat. But honestly…is this some kind of test? It was 81 degrees before I even had breakfast! And today will be 20+ days at 100+ degrees. That just doesn’t seem possible.
I pulled up some vegetables today: one of the tomato plants, a cucumber vine, and one of the yellow squash plants. They were just too pitiful to justify wasting any water on them, especially when I need it for my perennials and trees. Those trees are worth whatever it takes to keep them going. I was standing in the shade of one of the older trees today and thought how different the yard would be with a dozen more just like it!
The animals seem weary and out of sorts. I watched the two youngest raccoons enter the yard last night and they went straight to the water tub where the first one promptly sat down and splashed. His sibling crowded in and then they both fell out. Just like kids! The cows were settled under the shade of the trees when I left at 9am this morning and were still there when I returned at noon. Our cat complains each time I wander out to the yard and I know exactly what she wants- fresh water. Even though I have tubs everywhere, she likes hers directly out of the hose, and she usually gets it. The birds have dwindled in number and even the insects don’t seem as numerous. I suppose they have fewer food sources than usual. The pasture grasses are brittle and crunch under foot.
Each day there are news reports about people who are suffering because they don’t have air conditioning. Many are elderly and have few alternatives. They rely on community centers and shelters for a respite from the heat. A few organizations are passing out fans. Sad to think of anyone sitting in their home day after day without a cool breeze.
I know this is only a small part of our year, but some days feel like an eternity. I would like to see one of these clouds stop teasing us and drop a couple of inches of water instead.
And I will try NOT to complain about cold weather this winter…honest…I’ll try.
