One of my students is fond of telling me “I have a hundred dozen things on my desk!” when he is a little behind and feeling overwhelmed. I knew exactly how he felt when I walked outside yesterday! I am way behind and there are just too many things to be done!!! Weeding, pruning, transplanting, weeding, watering, planting, weeding, mulching, repairing, weeding…did I mention I’m a little behind on weeding?
I finally had to take a deep breath and prioritize. The planting and transplanting had to be done, as well as the watering. It has been SO dry here. Weeding will be one of those “do all summer” chores so I might as well get used to doing only the worst for now. I just don’t have the time or strength to do it all at once. I repaired a loose part of the fence. I puttered around with a couple of bird feeder problems. There are always bird feeder problems!
By the way…this is when I usually put out the hummingbird feeders. I tried one last weekend and it was empty in minutes. That’s what happens when the wind blows it sideways! Good thing there are plenty of flowers available for early arrivals.
I was thrilled to see the clematis bloom yesterday! The recent and thankfully brief overnight freeze we had was hardest on it. The vine looks scorched and four buds drooped their little heads and gave up. However, it looks like we will enjoy at least four more. I just planted it last year, so it is quite young.
The oak leaf hydrangea was a start from a friend’s plant and those are literally its only two blooms. I’ve seen hers though, and I know the future holds bigger and better things.
I have two mystery plants ready to bloom. One is a young unlabeled tree given to me by a friend who lost the tag and only remembers that “it blooms”, which it is indeed about to do. The other is a shrub I bought on clearance that looked vaguely familiar from my CA days, but I have yet to look it up.
My lilac is blooming! I love them and they remind me of my grandmother’s yard. Yes, Kat, I fully admit to killing yours or maybe it was a harsh winter after I pruned it, or maybe….okay, I DID replace it. lol
Irises are popping out all over the yard! I wish it would be calm for a day or two so I could photograph some pairs and groups. The big purple one blowing in the wind looks like one of Della’s old ones, but in fact is not. It is a newer, larger variety that I got from a friend. I did notice that there are a dozen of Della’s now! And my prettier, fancier, purchased hybrids should, should bloom after the wind normally calms down a bit. But not much has been normal this year! It was nearly 90 yesterday!
So…tomatoes in the ground. And let me just say that I love, love, love the biodegradable “plant the whole pot” concept! Peppers planted. Ornamental corn and sunflowers planted. Half of the okra planted. Half of the cucumbers planted. Rest of herbs planted (some were planted last week). I plant a few things in two week rotation so we don’t have everything ripe at once. Plus, I really just “wing it” when it comes to planting what when. As I said, it was nearly 90 yesterday- who knows how that equates on the planting chart!
I feel better. Not so overwhelmed. Ready to weed a little each afternoon after school. Well, except for Monday- I have a meeting. And Thursday I have a very important shopping task to complete. And…well, it will get done eventually!
