Next Sunday is my birthday, so I thought I would count down the last week with some of my favorite photos of sweet little me. Don’t worry, I don’t plan to dwell on my wonderfulness all week, and if something gets in front of my camera this week I will certainly share new pictures as well. In fact, I plan to walk down to the pond this afternoon since the ground is drying out.
I’ve been giving thought to my weight again. I suppose that is a natural reaction for a woman once again facing her birthday as a fat lady. I have not lost, nor gained, any weight in months. Just coasting along doing the same old things and putting the same old food into the same old body. I have not reverted back to any of my wicked ways, I’ve just not been as diligent as possible. Yesterday I decided not to buy eggs (well Egg Beaters actually, because I haven’t eaten a real egg in ages). While I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating eggs, I had to rethink the impact of how I was eating them. For me eating eggs usually means adding something else to them. I make omelets, wraps, etc. with cheese, or ham and cheese. I add toast or a bagel or tortilla. That adds up to a lot more fat and calories than a bowl of oatmeal or cereal. And I’m more likely to add a few blueberries to my cereal, which are better for me than cheese. So I’m tweaking a little this week and waiting to see how I feel.
My daughter has committed herself to a vegetarian lifestyle and I applaud her for it. While we don’t agree on some of her most extreme practices, I do think all of us eat far too much meat. The dangers aren’t just in the meat consumption itself, but like my previous explanation of the eggs, the danger lies in how we cook and eat it. We coat it, cover it, smother it, or sauce it up with something else that has fat, sugar, salt, or all three. I recently saw an interview with a woman who uses two bottles of oil per week because she fries everything! Even when we grill meat we finish it off with some sort of sweet or salty topping, sauce, or marinade.
I overheard the strangest conversation at WalMart yesterday. A mom and her young daughter (about eight) were pulling some items out of the frozen snacks section when the girl stopped to read the label on some sort of bite-sized goodie (I couldn’t see all of the package). “Mom, what’s combination meat?” she asked. “Mmmm, I don’t know for sure what combination meat is. Why don’t you get that one that says ‘more pork’.” LOL If they hadn’t stayed there so long I would have checked the labels myself to figure out the “combination” for that one!
I also wandered into the garden department yesterday and drooled a bit over the red tulips but declined to buy any. They don’t last long in the pots, and my own will bloom soon enough. I studied the seed packets and started thinking about a few changes I want to make in the garden this year. Mostly I just breathed in the lovely scent of potting soil and told myself that spring will be returning soon.
So, I’m counting down to my birthday.
Hopefully counting down a little more weight loss.
Counting the days until it is truly spring.
Counting on you to keep reading my crazy thoughts!
