It occurred to me this week that this is the second winter I have entered into without giving any thought to crocheting or knitting. In our family that might actually be counted as a sin! Generations of our women have crocheted, knitted, and tatted their way through the winter months. They actually began in September and made Christmas gifts: scarves, shawls, blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, house shoes, place mats, doilies, and dresser scarves. I’ve written before about some of the work done by my ancestors. I have a few of their carefully-made pieces and photos of others.
It occurred to me this year that crocheting and sewing are family traditions and I’m failing to effectively represent my generation. My mother and grandmother spent hours teaching me to crochet, and I spent hours teaching myself to knit, only to let my skills go unused. I could make baby blankets for the crisis center or scarves for cold children or booties for babies. Besides, I’ve been trying to find a way to stay awake in the evenings so that I sleep better at night. What better way to stay awake from 7-8 than to crochet?
So today I plan to buy some yarn, dig my needles out of the closet, and make something. BTW, that sweater is my baby sweater. Gran made it for a tiny baby, not knowing that I would weigh eleven pounds. She swore that I wore it a few times. Lol

Amazing that you have your baby sweater--especially after all the moves you've done.
I have no skills of this nature but I remembering always admiring Grandma's couch with the afghan laid across the back. It seemed so happy and cozy that way.
