I have been reading “dear Santa” letters from 1931. I posted a few on my Caddo blog, but there are many, many more. For the most part they are sweet but generic, filled with requests for candy, oranges, and baby dolls. Simpler times and modest expectations. In a couple of weeks I will help my students write their letters to Santa. If last year is any indication I will need help to spell the brand names and write the correct model numbers for many of the electronic gadgets requested. Seldom does one of my boys say “I want a game”. No…it’s “I want a name brand xyz”! Today’s kids are savvy shoppers with very specific desires! They ought to be- they see more commercials and ads and product placements than any other generation before them.
I wonder though, if some of them will quickly tire of the lights and bells and whistles and become engrossed in the creative magic of building something with the boxes the gadgets and games arrived in. I hope so.
Here are a couple more little insights into the next generation:
R- “I’m going to my cousin’s house to play this weekend!”
Me- “That sounds like fun. Where does he live?”
R- “I don’t know, but my Mom does. She looked it up on her phone.”
S-“When I get home I’m going to charge my batteries so I can play on my motorcycle!”
H- “I love to bowl! “
Me- “Do you bowl in Durant?”
H- “No, on my Wii!”
Pretty soon I will have to retire because I will no longer be able to communicate with children! Lol

I can't even buy toys for the grandchildren or great-grandchildren any more. Too much hi-tech stuff. And you don't know what they already have when you don't live near them. I just send the parents money and they buy presents to be from us.
