100+ degrees. It was so hot yesterday that as I completed my errands after school I actually had trouble breathing. Each year I wonder why we don’t start school in September! Our little students will be hot and tired and unaccustomed to recess. Most do not venture out except during the early morning hours. We will not even attempt to take them out for afternoon recess for at least a month. I noticed yesterday that one of the local high schools is having football practice late at night! Last night I went outside at 7pm with thoughts of finishing the lawn mowing. Nope! Still too hot. I decided to let it go until morning. The flowerbeds need attention, but they will have to wait until tomorrow morning. August is my least favorite month.
Even the critters have changed their ways because of the heat. The raccoons come out later at night to eat and have also been here at 5am a couple of mornings. They move slowly at night, but run and play and climb the security light pole during the wee hours of the morning. The bunnies stretch out in the afternoon shade and pant. They don’t even try to run away from me. The dragonflies get as close as possible to the water I spray on the flowers. The water tubs and bird baths scattered throughout my yard are empty each day. I know the squirrel is using one of them. The cows spend most of the afternoon in the shade of the trees. It is too hot to move and they know it!
Oh, well, somehow we will all muddle through until September. It seems cruel to write off a whole month just because of the temperature. Surely we can think of some good things about August. One of my brothers and one of my sisters-in-law and several of my friends were born in August. So Happy Birthday to all of them! And there are actually several amusing holidays in August. I’m off to school again today. More supplies to set out and some decorating to do. Then I have to sit down at my desk and organize my thoughts and plans for next week. Have to get some treat bags ready for “meet the teacher” night. Discipline charts, handwriting samples, lesson plans…I’m in teacher mode!
Stay in the shade and have a great day!

We've been enjoying rare thunderstorms, spectacular lighting and hail. Maybe some cooling (or just tornados YIKES!) are on your way. Rain continues for the rest of the week here!
Stay cool.
