Okay, I did something stupid and I won’t do it again. I tried to be “tough” and endure my back pain and treat it myself so I wouldn’t have to miss school and/or pay money for a doctor’s visit if I didn’t need it. I was also reluctant to hear, once again, that my body problems will be better once I lose more weight. Trying, honestly…
Anyway, my back spasms have made no logical sense at all. Sunday afternoon and evening I had a few twinges of pain. Monday I was in pain all night and felt manageably good Tuesday. Tuesday night I slept well with little pain. Woke up yesterday in agony. 800mg of ibuprofen got me through the morning, even the FIRE DRILL, but by 1pm I knew I was in trouble. I can tolerate a pain level of “three” pretty well. Beyond four I need help. Called the doctor and made an appointment with my doctor’s colleague for 5:30. Ironic that three times before I have been injured or in pain and have had to see Dr. H instead of my own doctor because my doctor was booked up. This immediately set my mind at ease because Dr. H never mentions my weight. Thank you Lord for that little blessing. J
Let me just say that the time between 2pm and 5:30pm was an eternity!! I managed to finish out the day at school by sheer willpower. At one point one of my student’s asked, “Mrs. Maurer, why are you just sitting there?” I said, “My back hurts, honey.” “Oh. Okay.” And off she went to read a book. Inquiring minds just want to know. Lol
BTW- If I am in pain or not feeling well, I tend to be overly sweet to my children to compensate. I’m not one of those teachers who are grouchy with their students when sick. Spouse, oh yes, students, no. I’m also “gently honest”. I won’t give them details, but I do tell them what is wrong.
Had a wonderful encounter in the clinic waiting room. My doctor’s wife is a nurse and has been working in his office to cover for his regular nurse, who is on sick leave after some surgery. Years ago I worked for her when she owned a large daycare. Long story shortened, we remained friends and she is just a lovely person. I haven’t seen her in about a year. She spotted us in the waiting room and came over to chat. It was great to see her! Yet another blessing!
Dr. H talked with me for about ten minutes, gave me a shot, prescribed three meds and heat therapy. He also informed me that my blood pressure was dangerously high (170/110) because of the pain, and wanted to follow up on that once the pain was relieved. I assured him that I have an appointment with my doctor in early April. My blood pressure is always the main topic of discussion! We also had a brief laugh when he asked, “What’s your favorite pharmacy?” I replied, “Well, I use Walgreen’s, but I’m not sure they will ever be my favorite pharmacy!”
I swear they have his office bugged and they are out for revenge! We went to Walgreen’s and I let the clerk know I was there, in the store, waiting. I even spelled my name for her and she verified that I also had a refill ready and waiting to be picked up. I listened as they called one customer after another. I shopped. I picked up a new heating pad. After thirty minutes I noticed that the pharmacist was no longer behind his counter and was out front assisting customers. I went back to the counter and inquired about my prescriptions. “Oh, yes, they’re ready.” I wanted to scream “Then why didn’t you CALL MY NAME??”, but I restrained myself, paid for the meds and left. It was 7:30. If I hadn’t gone back to the counter I would probably have been there until 8!
I know I’m rambling. You should have known I would!
I’m not in pain this morning and I will be much quicker to call the doctor next time, especially now that I’ve been reminded about how pain affects my blood pressure. I will take my medication for the next few days and I’m confident that I will be healed soon. And as another blessing- thank you Lord so much- the meds are helping my foot! It feels great this morning.
If I have said anything stupid please keep in mind that the warning on one of my meds says, “May cause confusion.” I’ll be sure to tell our school secretary what to do if she finds me wandering the halls today!
Have a great day! I will!
