I met Doris sometime in 1975 or 1976- difficult to pinpoint the exact date without digging through stuff in my closet. Ironic that I can’t clearly remember; she has made such an impact on my life that you would think I could recall the exact moment. Doris was and always has been one of the most sincere people I have ever met.
We worked together at Valley Publishers, a small history book publisher in Fresno, CA. Doris and I went to a publishing conference at Stanford and stayed in the dorms together. I still remember one of our late night conversations. It was about angels. That’s the kind of relationship we’ve always had- serious, honest, genuine. Doris makes you think! She also makes me smile. She is very honest about the fact that she doesn’t correspond as often as I do. But I always reassure her that I will continue to write as long as I know she is reading.
I am always delighted when we get to see each other again. It’s just like “old times” and such a blessing to know her.
That’s me at my drafting desk at Valley in 1976. My long hair was in a bun, and yes, I made that purple polyester pantsuit with my own two hands. It was the seventies!
The group photo is all of us in Lone Pine in 1978.
The couch photo is at Karen’s in 2000.
The other one is last month at our hotel in Fresno.
