Quick- What's black and white and read by every parent in the county? Okay, the title of today's post is your hint. LOL Report cards go out tomorrow. Except for adding attendance and testing a couple of children who were absent last week, mine are ready to go.
I often wonder what it would be like if we got a report card every nine weeks. (Our students also get weekly behavior and progress reports.) I know many of us get annual evaluations and some daily feedback from bosses and co-workers, but what if everything we know was tested and analyzed every nine weeks? What if our job performance was rated and our behavior graded? What if our relationship with our peers, and our ability to play well with others was given a "satisfactory" or a "needs improvement"? How would we fare?
I know- we get a paycheck. And the fact that we are working says someone thinks we are making a passing grade- maybe. I know you will agree with me that some people are getting a paycheck "regardless of performance" because we've all encountered them! Each of us probably has a co-worker or two we'd like to write a report card for and it wouldn't be pretty. But most jobs are tied to some sort of review. It's just not as frequent or comprehensive as the school report card.
I try not to be too critical of my students, especially on this first report card. After all, most are trying their very best in a new situation. They will spend the next twelve years or more trying to please a variety of people and prove their intelligence, skill, and creativity is worthy of recognition. Then they will spend the rest of their life trying to prove they are worthy of a paycheck.
Pretend someone is watching and grading you today. See if it makes a difference in how you do your job!
