One of my guilty pleasures of summer is wasting a little of the afternoon by watching daytime television. Now, I don't have cable or dish or whatever, so I have a choice of six channels which are variations of NBC, CBS, and Fox. I get soaps, talk shows, court television, and old sit-coms depending on the time of day. I can't stand soaps, and haven't watched one since the seventies. Sit-coms are too predictable, and besides, there are plenty on at night if I need a laugh. So...at least once or twice a week I watch Dr. Phil, Judge Judy, or Oprah.
I have to start by making excuses for watching Oprah. Those of you who know me well know I don't like Oprah. But she does have some amazing guests sometimes and I watch them. At least that's what I tell myself, and my son. :)
Judge Judy is just a character and it's fun to watch her intimidate people. She gets a little crazy sometimes, but that's why her show is on television.
Which brings me to my former favorite- Dr. Phil. What have you done Dr. Phil?? You've gone over to the dark side. You have begun to remind me of someone who was NEVER on my favorites list- Jerry Springer! You're booking the crazies and the screamers and the weirdos in ever increasing numbers.
Or maybe it's me. Maybe people really have gotten worse since last summer. Maybe I've just watched the show for so long now that I'm beginning to be able to answer questions before he does. I know all of his standard lines and cute country colloquialisms.
One thing has remained the same. No matter what I watch in the afternoon, it always makes me feel better about my own life. After watching the drama on any talk or court show, after listening to the crying and screaming, I feel so normal, so boring, so wonderful! Not because I'm special of course. There but for the grace of God... But compared with the woman who has seven refrigerators of rotting food I'm living the good life!!
Dr. Phil has a series of commercials about being on the show, so I went to his site and looked at his "be on the show" list. I told Robert that his parents aren't crazy enough to be on Dr. Phil. He shook his head and laughed. "Yes, you are!" he said. "They just need a better list!"
