we worked in the yard today!! It was sunny and warm and most of the ground was dry enough for a little digging. Of course we had to go to Lowe's first. I bought a Texas scarlet flowering quince, a Lynwood gold forsythia, a Halcyon hosta, a rosemary bush, and some dianthus. We already had four azaleas that Gary bought last week. My violas from last year are blooming. The daffodils and tulips are blooming. The ox eye daisies are just about to pop open. The purple coneflowers have sprouted, along with the daylilies and irises. It's beginning to feel like home!
We also cut down a small, dead pine tree. That was such a relief because I had to look at it every morning when I had my coffee. Now I can see the new forsythia and the bird feeder we put on the stump.
We're experiencing something new here and I'm sure it's going to be a problem. We have a squirrel. In all the years that we lived at the other house we seldom saw a squirrel anywhere near the house. I suppose it was because we had three cats and the neighbors had eight+ dogs most of the time. Anyway, this little critter is fearless and Gary has been within three feet of it. I keep warning him! (I remember a classmate in high school who was bitten by a squirrel and had to take rabies shots!)
The squirrel has conquered almost every birdfeeder. We have long tube ones. We have a swinging dish on a shepherd's crook. We have a "house" type on the stump. The only one that seems to be off limits, so far, is a flat dish I have on top of an old metal post. Perhaps it's too slick, or the squirrel has been so busy with the others that it just hasn't found that one!
It was good to be outside today, but I'm in bad shape. Need to get tough if I'm going to be ready for the serious chores of summer!
Hope you get outside this weekend.
