W.K.2. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
This is our focus for February.
We began this process in August by reading non-fiction texts, learning a few simple sight words (I,a,the, see), verbally describing animals and objects, and learning why one group of words is a “sentence” and another is not. We have been learning, reviewing, expanding, and practicing those concepts ever since. So by now everyone in class should be able to write three sentences about a dog…..NOT.
Welcome to reality.
We completed our DIBELS testing this week and there is a 190 point difference between my lowest and highest students.
One of my students could write a book if I just spelled enough “big words” for him. Another has to be reminded that we are writing about a dog and yes, he should be able to sound that word out and write it down without my help. I know for a fact that he CAN, but since he doesn’t want to expend that much effort, he chooses instead to poke holes in his paper. The rest of my students fall somewhere in between and six out of fifteen can write a pretty decent story about a dog. They also draw some adorable pictures!
So during February we will learn to write the names of our friends. We will write Valentine’s Day cards to them. We will write some descriptive sentences about our friends. We will write stories about friendship.
We will write….
