I live in a state with mandatory minimum prison sentences for many offenses and no mandatory maximum class sizes in k-12. Sometimes I want to punch reality.

I'm a currently unemployed middle/high school math teacher. It's possible I'm just so terrible at my desired job that I'm unhirable regardless, but I suspect it has a lot more to do with class sizes of more than 40 kids suddenly becoming routine in high school math here. I'm pretty sure than given a class of 20-ish out of those 40+ kids each period I could help them learn more math than they're learning now, particularly the lower-tracked freshmen. I cannot imagine having any idea of individual student strengths and weaknesses with 40+ students in a class and over 200 students a day. I'm not even entirely sure I could learn that many names.
