We have two weeks before school starts here. Is your child ready for kindergarten? These are the attributes I hope to see in my new students:
- Cooperative attitude.
- Self-confidence.
- Ability to take care of personal needs.
- Curiosity and motivation to learn.
- Emotional stability.
- Self-control.
You’ll notice that I didn’t mention anything about numbers or letters or any other academic standard. Parents worry so much about whether or not their child can count or read before they start school. I’ve worked with hundreds of children over the years, and while it is always great to get children with a sound foundation of intellectual skills, many of them do NOT become good students unless they also have the social and behavioral skills listed above. I would rather get a teachable child and start at “square one” with them, than get a child who can read but chooses to spend most of the day misbehaving. As I’ve stated before, attitude is a major factor in school success! Make sure your child starts his or her school career with a good one.
