Once in a while something happens that reminds you of how kind and thoughtful people can be. A couple visiting this past weekend brought me enough crayons, pencils, paper, erasers, markers, and miscellaneous supplies for my whole class. They gave us a case of paper! A case of markers! I was overwhelmed by their generosity.
I’ve often read that having plenty of supplies and books makes a class feel more secure and that students are less likely to feel the urge to compete and argue over things if they know their needs will be met. I’ve found that to be true, especially with desirable things like markers and craft supplies. No one likes to think that someone else might get the “last one” of anything and leave them bereft. Believe me when I tell you that a kindergarten girl can make an awfully sad face when she stands at your desk and tells you she absolutely must have a pink marker to finish her fairy picture and there “isn’t one in art center”.
So we will start our school year secure in the knowledge that our needs will be met, thanks to the kindness of people who don’t even live here!
