Just a quick tip for those of you who may be new to kindergarten reading. At this time of year we are reading little books that coordinate with our science topics. They are usually eight to ten pages long and have one or two sentences on each page. In addition to other activities we have daily group reading time. I have my eight top readers read one page each. Then I have my lower readers read the same pages. The children think we are doing it just so everyone has a turn, which is true, but it also lets my lower readers hear all the words and gives them the confidence to read in front of everyone else. Yes, I also have two non-readers, but they have good memories and I pick the pages with the fewest or simplest words for them and they “say the words on the page”. I know they aren’t actually reading, but the other students don’t realize it, and someday soon they will be reading too!
