Oh, my!! Yesterday my students were awful and Mrs. Maurer had to give them one of her “I am NOT happy” speeches! They have just been so sloppy and careless since they got back from break. Yesterday, after reminding them for the fourth time to please, please, please check their papers before turning them in to me, I got three incomplete papers and two without names. And their drawings, handwriting, and general work habits are showing signs of “I just want to turn this in so I can play”. I told them if I saw one more blank-faced stick figure scribbled in purple we were going to skip recess for a drawing lesson!!
There is nothing wrong with letting your students know that you are unhappy. Just make sure you follow it up with suggestions for positive changes they are capable of making. This morning during circle time we will have that drawing lesson and a reminder about how to check a paper before turning it in.
I’m sure we will all start today with a new attitude!
Students are not "awful" but perhaps you could professionally say that certain student's BEHAVIOR did not meet your expectations. My suggestion is give them less pencil and paper work and you won't have the problem of them rushing to get to their REAL work which can be done through PLAY-based learning.
