One more crime article from 1914 and then I promise to post some weddings or funerals or something! I found this because there is a Bohanan in one case.
BTW, the court docket for 1914 was the “largest criminal docket ever had in county court”- a total of 138 cases, 85 of which were violations of the prohibition act. Names of all violators were listed in the paper.
The two cases that drew the most local attention were those of Red Scott and Laura Watson. Red Scott was so disliked by the citizens of Bokchito that they raised the money and paid the firm of McPherren and Cochran to prosecute him. His crime was adultery with a negro woman and he was convicted and given five years in prison.
Laura Watson was charged along with her mother, Mollie Harmon, and her boyfriend for abandoning a newborn in the toilet on the train. Conflicting articles report sentences of 4 months for the girl and 9 months for her mother or one year for each. No name or punishment listed for the father of the child. The child lived and was adopted by a “Durant family”.

Several Important Convictions the Past Week
Two Insanity Cases; Court Still in Session
Three Years for Rogers
Walter (Sunny) Rogers of Colbert was Tuesday afternoon given a verdict in the district court for swearing falsely before the recent grand jury. Rogers was given three years in the penitentiary.
It was charged that when Rogers appeared before the grand jury last month he was asked whether or not he knew anything of gambling that had been going on during the past three years. He stated, it is so alleged, that he did not, whereas the grand jury had evidence that he had knowledge of a “crap game” at Colbert.
Laura Watson Convicted
After remaining out since Tuesday afternoon at 5 o’clock the jury in the case of Laura Watson, on Wednesday returned a verdict of guilty, but could not agree upon the penalty and left it up to Judge Hatchett. The defendant is a young girl and was charged with deserting a baby, the crime having been committed last spring and the baby was found on a Katy passenger train.
A Crazy Negro
Bill Simms, a negro of Colbert, was taken into custody on Thursday morning as being insane and was placed in the county jail awaiting the action on the part of the Insanity Board. Simms had been very wild at times, and had a fancy for biting everyone with whom he came in contact. It was found necessary to keep him tied up at times.
Mrs. Della Bohanan of Colbert, was brought to this city Thursday morning and will be examined as to her sanity by the insanity board. Mrs. Bohanan has been acting queer as of late and had a hobby for crawling under everything she saw.
Mollie Harmon Convicted
The jury in the case of Mollie Harmon, who was charged jointly with her daughter of abandoning a child, returned a verdict for conviction on Wednesday night but were unable to agree upon the punishment.
Convicted a Negro
Cleveland Crane, a negro living on the north side of the county, was convicted Wednesday night of stealing a cow from Mike LeFlore. The punishment meted out to the negro was two years in the penitentiary.
