Back to the Bible- A Remedy for Trouble

The All-Wise Creator of us all has given the world a remedy for its ills, but the world seems to think it is wiser than its Creator, and refuses to accept it, preferring to try a thousand remedies of its own.

What we need to do is to get back to the first principles: that God created the heavens, the earth; and that man is our brother. We need to practice the golden rule and observe the Sabbath.

When we do, then we shall do much toward getting rid of bad debts, bad crops, red bugs, bed bugs, weevils, and floods.

What is to be expected when we keep stores open the same on Sundays as we do other days? What is to be expected when we ride miles and miles to see a baseball game on Sunday?

God made his laws to be observed- not to be set aside by puny men. Man may think he can get by them, but he cannot. The Bible teaches us of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. It tells us to observe the Sabbath, to love our neighbors, to give thanks in all things.

Let us get back to the Bible.

Our farmers have trouble because they do not observe the laws of God. The Bible says so. Yet we seek to find a remedy elsewhere.

Spirit-filled and earnest preachers have given their lives to uplift their bothers, yet people will not heed. The people seem to think that they know more than God. But when ill comes the people don’t know what to do. They feel so ashamed of not having done as God said that they seek every other remedy rather than the sure one.

Politics will not help you; no matter who is elected the problems will be about the same.

But there is a remedy for all human ills. A sure remedy, a never-failing remedy.

That is God.

Frank Lawrence was in town Saturday reporting prospects fine. Frank is figuring on sowing quite a lot of cow peas. Take it from The Herald and do it.

Mrs. J. M. Pennington of Whitewright, Texas is visiting her sister, Mrs. Dr. McGregor and brother, Wm. Malone.

Mrs. Mary Hill returned last Friday from Missouri where she attended the bedside of her brother for six weeks, who is now able to be up.

County Commissioner McDormitt was up from Durant Monday and he, with Commissioner Freeny, was inspecting some roads near here.

Arthur Manning is remodeling his home on west Buffalo street. It will be set back farther and the porch enlarged, besides some changes made in the interior.

Kirby Glasscock suffered a severe accident by being thrown and dragged some distance by a horse last Friday afternoon. Quick aid averted a serious accident.

Tomorrow (Friday night) the Fifes begin their revival meeting at the opera house. Everybody invited to attend these meetings. They are interesting and soul-stirring.

Edw. Walters is building an addition to his home just east of town. Brick foundations are being put in and the additions will make the house in modern shape and very comfortable.

Don’t forget about the revival to be held at the opera house next week, beginning Friday night. The Fifes have a national reputation and have large crowds wherever they go.

J. L. Hull was in town Saturday and reported things east of town as looking fine. Mr. Hull thinks that a permanent supply of water would do more than any one thing to develop the prairie country.

The Lawrence district school, four miles east of Caddo, closed last Friday. Miss Myrtle Pearce was teacher and reports a successful term. There were no closing exercises, owing to the non-attendance the last days.  

W. H. Alexander, from New Mexico, is here visiting his brother, T. A. Alexander. It will be remember that Uncle Alex went to New Mexico about three years ago, but it did not take him long to decide to come back, and come back he did.

Harve Phelps was here Saturday renewing his allegiance to The Herald. Mr. Phelps conducts a part of his farm under the direction of the state agricultural department and says he makes better crops by it. It is a part of the agricultural educational system of the state to have one of these experimental farms in each county and results so far have justified the small expenditure. 

One More Graduate

High School Closing is Largely Attended

 

The Commencement Exercises of Caddo Schools were largely attended last Friday night at the high school auditorium.

The program as published in the Herald was had and each member acquitted him or her self creditably.

Another graduate, Carl Holland, was added during the last week, he having done extra work by correspondence through the Normal, making nineteen graduates in all this year: ten girls and nine boys. In addition, three others will make up what they lacked during the summer, so that the total number to finish this year will be twenty-two. This is by far the largest class that Caddo has ever had and it speaks well not only for the school and its patrons, but for the diligence of the young people who put forth the effort necessary to accomplish the feat.

Owing to the fact of lower personal valuations and of not many paying taxes this year, the board will not have as much money for next year as will be needed so they have cut hate salaries of the teachers slightly. They would not have done this had it not been necessary.

As yet all the teachers elected have not been announced- some changes will be made due to the cut in salaries, but the board has not yet announced them.

Prof. Early and Mrs. R. W. Wilson are conducting summer school for those who desire to make up the work they lack at the High School building, beginning Monday.

Those teachers who lived elsewhere have gone to their respective homes. Those who live here are resting, preparing to take the summer school at the Normal.

Mrs. Fran Naylor, Robert Frank and Margaret were here from Tishomingo a short while Wednesday.

Rev. W. B. Slack was returned to St. Mark’s Church in Oklahoma City by the West Oklahoma Conference last week.

Miss Wilma McDonald has returned to Caddo from Paris, Texas and will make her home with her sister Mrs. John Fielding.

There will be no services at the Methodist Church Sunday except Sunday School and league, the pastor being away at Conference.

Rev. and Mrs. M. A. Cassidy left Wednesday to attend the East Oklahoma Annual Conference which convened at McAlester that evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Owens spent Saturday night in Savanna, Okla. with Mr. and Mrs. Baker B. Archer. They were entertained while there with a social.

Little Misses Rachel and Royce Barber entertained a party of little folks at their home last Saturday afternoon with a Halloween party.

Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Tidwell were in Caddo yesterday from Matoy on their way to Alabama where they will make their home. These good people have lived in the Matoy neighborhood the past twenty years and have many friends who regret to see them go, but who wish them well in their new home. They requested that we send their Herald to them.

B. F. Maddox, an Aged and Honored Citizen, Died Wednesday

B. F. Maddox died at home in Caddo Wednesday morning at 3 o’clock, aged 94 years.

The funeral was held at the Baptist church that afternoon at 3, conducted by Rev. M. D. Gentry, pastor. Burial was in Caddo Cemetery, Mhoon funeral Home being in charge.

B. F. Maddox had lived a long, useful life; born in Texas before the Mexican war; he was a citizen of the Texas Republic, then upon admission into the Union he was a citizen of the U. S.; then when Texas joined the Confederacy he was a citizen of that ill-fated republic; then back into the Union, thus he lived under four flags without moving.

Maddox was a Confederate solider and served well. He belonged to the Veterans.

In early life he united with the Baptist Church and since then lived a consistent consecrated life, respected by all of those who knew him.

B. F. Maddox came to Caddo forty years ago and has lived here ever since.

He is survived by one son, D. L. Maddox, Omaha, and two daughters, Mrs. Faulkner and Mrs. Birdie Hill of Caddo.

Pall bearers were: Eric Holm, M. G. Downing, Lake Brewer, A. E. McCreary, J. C. Davison and J. C. Petty.

Until a few weeks ago B. F Maddox was able to come down town every day. He voted at the July primary and he was welcome at all places.

In his presence one felt like he was in the presence of another century and that such a life was purposeful and rich in achievement.

October 13, 1938

Sherman, Texas- Oct. 12- Funeral services were held Wednesday at Caddo, Okla. for B. F. Maddox, 94, who died at his home in Caddo. He was the father of Mrs. Estelle Spears of Sherman. Mr. Maddox was born in 1844 in Lamar County. With his parents he moved to Grayson County in 1849 and settled four miles east of the present site of Van Alstyne. Mr. Maddox enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of 17 and served three years and six months. In November, 1865, after his return from the army he married Miss Catherine T. Parrish and they made their home in new Warren, Lamar County. In 1897 Mr. and Mrs. Maddox moved to Caddo. Mrs. Maddox died several years ago. He is survived by three daughters, including Mrs. Spears, Mrs. C. W. Faulkner, and Mrs. Birdie V. Hill of Caddo, and one son, D. L. Maddox of Omaha, Neb.

We were the first graduates in the new building. The high school burned in 1920 and we had classes downtown until the school was rebuilt. Our class was over Wesley and Bud Love's store. The boys would let down a string to the grocery store below and they would send up candy, apples, oranges and so forth. All went well until the teacher smelled an orange one day. However, there was no evidence as the orange was quickly eaten-- seeds, peeling and all. Our recess was running up and down the railroad banks. When we were in school there was a big controversy on dancing. The school board said no and the mothers said yes. We danced and they expelled us for one week. The school board also said we could not have a Baccalaureate or class night. However, the seniors rolled it all into one program and we had a real long Graduation service.

 

Lingo-Leeper Lumber

Lingo-Leeper Company Buys Lyon-Gray Yard

 

A trade was consummated this week whereby the Lingo-Leeper Lumber Company became the owner of the Lyon-Gray Lumber Company’s yard and business in Caddo.

Mr. Chiles contemplates consolidation of the yards as soon as possible, though for the present both yards will be open.

This gives the Lingo-Leeper Company three yards- two in Caddo and one in Kenefick. The main office is in Denison.

Mr. T. O. Lafferty, who has been manager of the Lyon-Gray offices here several years, has not made known his plans, but he expects to continue with the company, perhaps at Commerce, Texas, as Lyon-Gray has several lumber yards at Texas points.

Caddo will regret to lose Mr. Lafferty and family as citizens, but will wish them well wherever they go.

80 Year Celebration

At the home of Mrs. Wood Hill Sunday, Justice B. F. Maddox celebrated his 80^th birthday with a dinner at which about fifteen relative of himself and Mrs. Maddox were present. Out of town relatives were: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Smith, the latter being a granddaughter; Mrs. J. A. Spears and daughter and son, Jack and Catherine, daughter, grandson and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maddox, all from Sherman.  Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Faulkner, daughter and son-in-law of Dallas were there and a Mr. Adams of Van Alstyne.

Incidentally it was the 59^th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Maddox’s wedding, they having been married on his 21^st birthday.

Judge and Mrs. Maddox have the love of the many people who have known them; they lived in Caddo some twenty-five years and Tuesday Judge Maddox was elected Justice of the Peace for the fifth time.

It is not often that people live to be eighty years of age and few married couples there be who have lived together fifty-nine years. Their lives are rich with memories of days agone; their evening of life is spent in contemplation of the future and reflection over the deeds of the year past.

The Herald wishes this good couple, ripe in experience, many returns of the day.

 

I posted the following items previously, but decided to put them together. Unfortunately, Mr. Maddox’s cemetery listing only has the year that he died- 1938- but not the month. I will look next week, but it may take me a while to find his obituary. (Edited later: found his obit in the Sherman paper, October 13, 1938. Will post on Monday along with whatever is in the Caddo paper for the same date.)

Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary

Monday, November 2, was the sixtieth wedding day of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Maddox. It was also the occasion of Mr. Maddox’s 81^st birthday.

A small crowd of relatives and neighbors gathered at the home of the old folks and at the noon hour a bountiful table was set.

Mr. and Mrs. Maddox have been residents of Caddo about 25 years, coming here from Texas. Mr. Maddox was born in the Republic of Texas. Since coming here he has served the public in the capacity of mayor and justice of the peace, being justice of the peace at present. Both he and Mrs. Maddox have been members of the Missionary Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Maddox is 78 years old.

Mrs. B. F. Maddox Dies here Last Tuesday

Mrs. B. F. Maddox, aged 87 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Birdie V. Hill in Caddo, last Tuesday morning and was buried in the Caddo cemetery Wednesday with the funeral being held at the local Baptist church at 9 am, being in charge of Rev. R. C. Miller, pastor of the First Baptist church of Durant and assisted by Rev. J. M. James, pastor of the local Baptist church.

Deceased had been a resident of Caddo since 1898 and her death was from the result of a fall some six months ago and also infirmity.

She is survived by her husband and three daughters, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. C. W. Faulkner, who also lives here, and Mrs. Stella Spears of Sherman, and one son, D. L. Maddox of Omaha, Nebraska.

Deceased is also survived by seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

We extend to the surviving relatives our sincerest sympathy and condolence during their hour of bereavement.

B. F. Maddox Gives a Dinner Celebrating 92 Years Upon Earth

B. F. Maddox was 92 years of age Monday, and to celebrate a long and useful life upon earth he invited Rev. A. J. Ward, A. F. McCreary, Lake Brewer, J. C. Davison, and G. A. Crossett to take dinner Monday with him at the home of his daughters Mrs. Birdie Hill and Mrs. W. C. Faulkner.

Tuesday morning early the Judge, as he is familiarly termed, was downtown to vote for Roosevelt, he being an ardent Democrat and having voted in every presidential election to be had since Grant first ran.

B. F. Maddox was born in the county of Lamar, Nov. 2, 1844; nearly a century ago, during the time Sam Houston was at the head of Texas government. Lived in Texas until 1885 when he moved to Caddo, Indian Territory, and has lived here since that time. Mrs. Maddox, who bore him five children, passed to her reward two years ago.

Judge Maddox since early in life is a faithful member of the Baptist church, and it will be a …(unreadable)

Still able to get around, greet his friends, take an interest in what goes on, the Judge is a welcome visitor to his host of friends in town.

The hope is voiced that many returns of the day may in store for Judge Maddox. Of the future life he is assured by the faith of years of testing.

Mrs. Elmer Jeans and little daughter are visiting relatives in Caddo, coming in last Saturday.

A.F. Manning, J. B. Moore and W. W. Boone were business visitors to McAlester last Thursday.

Mrs. Wm. Kuschke left Sunday to join her husband at Navasota, where they will make their home.

Masters Charlie Ormsby and Charlie Anderson, from Denison, ere here last Sunday visiting friends.

Isaac Westmoreland returned this week from Mexia, Texas. He reports the oil field there almost vanished.

Miss Marion Naylor arrived home last Friday from teaching school at Atoka. She had a very successful year.

Miss Velma Shelby went to Sherman last Friday for treatment in the hospital. She was accompanied by Mrs. Tom Gross.

Mrs. T. Styron was in Sherman this week attending the bedside of her father, J. K. Bass, who is undergoing treatment at the sanitarium.

Mrs. Tatum was here from Ada to attend graduation exercises last Friday. She and Miss Sarah returned to Ada Sunday we’re they will make their home.

Misses Merle and Ellen McClure left Saturdays for their homes in Celeste, Texas. They have had a successful year as teachers of music and expression in our schools. 

Rev. Nalyor returned last Friday from attending the General Conference of the Methodist Church at hot Springs. He reports a very pleasant and profitable trip.

W. H. Thaten arrived Tuesday to spend a few days with friends and relatives after which he will leave Monday for Childress, Texas where he will make his home.

Clarence Pullen died at his home in Muskogee Sunday night after an illness of a month. He was the husband of Miss Ruby Tarpley, a former Caddo young lady. He had been in the drug business for many years at Muskogee, and was prominent in business circles. Her friends here will sympathize with Mrs. Pullen.

Rev. Moore, of Sherman, arrived last Friday and is now doing the duties of pastor of the Presbyterian Church. He is an earnest young man and has given a favorable impression.

H. T. Chiles and Rev. Frank Naylor attended Trades Day at Durant Tuesday. They report many fine examples of hogs and cattle on display. Mr. Chiles had his male and gilt there. He received many compliment son their appearance.

Grandma Harlan is here from Crowder, Okla., the guest of Mrs. C. A. Hancock and other friends. Grandma was one of the first settlers of Caddo. She is 93 years old and has perfect use of herself and enjoys the best of health. She has a host of friends here who are always delighted to see her. Mr. Crossett, of the Herald, has received an invitation to attend the Graduation exercises of the Baylor School of Medicine in Dallas May 29^th. It was from our old friend Ellis Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith of Caddo. He as a graduate of Caddo High six years ago and is altogether a very fine young man, one that Caddo is proud of. However, he does not intend to stop here. He will take post graduate work in New York before starting to practice his profession.
