Blue County, Choctaw Nation

May 5, 1902

To whom these present shall come, greeting: Know ye that the County and Probate court of Blue County, Choctaw Nations convened in regular session at Caddo, Indian Territory, the seat of Justice on May 5, 1902, all officers present.  J. H. Goforth, Judge, J. W. Durant, Sheriff, and F. Manning, Deputy Sheriff.

The John Duncan case was before the court to  prove the one brown mare branded C. D. on the hip, posted by Kenwood Fourtry(?) and in possession of Jack Bicy. The mare is between 4 and 5 years old. Statement of William Johnson in regards to the mare and also of Harris Field in regards to the mare proved to be satisfactory and the said property was ordered to be turned over to Robert Duncan.

Petition of Sallie Williams, Guardian of Esther Durant and Han Durant, minors and Mrs. Elvira Kemp to sell one place, situated west of Caddo on Blue for the sum of $40.00 for the benefit of the children known as Esther Durant and Han Durant and also, Mrs. Elvira Kemp. The said petition was granted.

The account against Minnie Good by M. A. Odell for taking care of Minnie Good from September 10^th 1901 to Feb. 13^th 1902 at $7.50 per month. The Judge ruled that he pay 4 months board, allowed in the amount of $32.00. The said account was granted.

The T. J. Morris case was in the court to prove one yearling. Witness Auston Perry, posted by Wheeler Butler; the evidence being sufficient the yearling was ordered turned over.

Petition of A. G. Butler asking for letters of guardianship over Czrene Brown, Matt Brown, Cornelius Brown, David Brown, and Mary Brown. The above petition being disapproved.

The court adjourned to the first Monday in June. F. E. Folsom, Clerk. 

Downing Wedding

Mrs. Janice Downing, Mr. Alex Bates are Married in San Diego

At the Methodist church in San Diego, Calif. last Thursday, July 1, Mrs. Janice Downing and Mr. Alex Bates were united in marriage in the presence of relatives and companions of both parties.

Mrs. Downing is the daughter of Mr. G. A. Crossett of the Caddo Herald and proprietor of Downing Café for five years prior to May 1 when it closed; and was employed in the Rohr Aircraft office prior to the wedding. Reared in Caddo, a noted friend of all men in service, she numbers her friends by many hundreds in this part of the state.

Mr. Bates is not known here. He formerly lived in Los Angeles, is a machinists mate in the U. S. Navy. The couple plan to live in San Diego where he is now stationed until duties or the course of war change things. Mrs. Downing’s boys Leroy and Jerry will soon go there also to make their home.

The ceremony was witnessed by Mrs. G. A. Crossett, mother of the bride, Mrs. Pat Hardy, her sister, Yeoman 2c Pat Hardy, Smn. Bryan Cochran, and Jake Edwards, Caddo, and a number of naval friends of the groom at the base.

Miss Virginia Richey left Tuesday for Tuskahoma where she will begin her duties as teacher of the Junior Department in the school.

Roy Downing, former Caddo high school student and football players, left Friday for Haskell where he will be one of the football players.

M. T. Latimore was here this week from Leechville, Ark. visiting his mother. He will attend Bethany College near Oklahoma City.

It surely is thrilling to snap into radio stations all over the country. You can do it with an Atwater-Kent set procured from H. T. Chiles.  

Horace Sargent left Monday for Stillwater where he becomes a student in A. & M. College. His many friends here wish him success.

Ed Rhodes, formerly with the City Garage is now with William’s Garage where he will be set to see his friends and do their auto and battery work.

The radio season- fall and winter- is just starting. Get an Atwater Kent from H. T. Chiles and enjoy the best things going on over the country.

Mrs. Mattie Lynch and Miss Pearl Lynch are home from a two months stay in Mineral Wells where the health of Mrs. Lynch was mint___ benefitted.

Mrs. C. D. Dale entertained her Sunday School class of young ladies last Friday morning with a sunrise swim and breakfast on Blue. Every one enjoyed the occasion.

Miss Alice Wilkerson of Anniston, Arkansas was visiting her cousin, Mrs. S. P. Hogan last week while on route to her home from Portland, Oregon where she spent her summer vacation.

Monday evening the Junior Missionary Society were hosts to the Senior Society at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. C. McCoy. The young folks proved themselves fine hosts and the older women very much enjoyed the evening. This Society is under direction of Mrs. O. R. Smith, and the young ladies respond splendidly to her leadership.

The Bryan County Missionary Baptist Association closed last Thursday in Caddo, one of the best sessions the Association ever had. A. E. McCreary was chosen clerk and has his minutes already in the hands of the printer and they will soon be printed by The Herald. C. C Hatchett was chosen Moderator a second time. He performed his duties wonderfully well.

Mrs. Ida Shelby and daughters, Misses Velma, Helen, and Lois left Sunday for their home in Phoenix, Ariz. after spending the past three months in Caddo while Miss Velma attended the S. T. C. at Durant and received her life diploma. Their many friends in their old home town enjoyed having them here and wish success, health, and happiness in the great metropolis of Arizona, their future home.

 

Mills Anniversary

Fiftieth Anniversary

Wednesday Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Mills, who live four miles west of town, celebrated their Golden Wedding. Forty-three children and grandchildren sat down to a sumptuous dinner. The children were: Mrs. M. Eslick, Robert Mills, John Mills, Miss Mandy Mills, J. Walter Mills, Mrs. N. F. Needham, and Mrs. C. H. Maddux.

The day was spent in pleasant reminiscence and general good feeling.

This is the twentieth year that Mr. and Mrs. Mills have lived in this part of the country. All the children are living except one. Mr. and Mrs. Mills bear the love and respect of all who know them.

Josh Lee Again Urges Measure to Prohibit Liquor in Army Camps

Declaring that the Christian people of the United States are very much concerned, Senator Josh Lee again urged Monday that liquor and vice be prohibited in and around all military camps.

Lee made his proposal as an amendment to the bill now pending to draft 18- and 19-year-olds. The Senate Military Affairs committee, of which Lee is chairman, has the matter now under consideration.

Senator Lee proposed the liquor ban as a military measure. When we think of a soldier, he said, we think of a man who stands erect, who walks with a firm quick step, who salutes with a vigorous gesture. To us he is the symbol of all the characteristics of manliness.

Therefore, when we see an intoxicated man wearing the uniform we are cut to the quick.

Lee pointed out that if the nation would draft boys under 20 years of age, the least the nation can do is to keep the military camps in which they train and live free from the temptations of liquor and vice.

So far as I know there is no one who denies that the use of liquor lowers resistance and destroys moral inhibitions. Therefore, if we do not prohibit liquor and vice from military camps we will make it so easy for the moral standards of our men to be lowered.

Lee read petitions from a number of church groups in Oklahoma who have written him urging the adoption of such a measure.
