Notice: All citizens of Blue County who have non-citizens in their employ must make applications for permits or they will be prosecuted as the law directs. All non-citizens following occupations in which permit is required must take out the same or they will be reported as intruders.  Died: Mrs. W. H. Lawrence died suddenly at her home in Durant on Thursday of last week.

Attorney G. A. Pate was in Caddo Sunday.

Frank Plato of Chickasha, I. T.  was in Caddo Saturday.

W. P. Ellis made a business trip to Denison Monday.

W. D. Harrison made a business trip to Denison Monday.

Mrs. W. E. Douglas of Durant has been in Caddo this week.

Dr. J. Rhea, a dentist from Durant, has been in Caddo this week.

Miss May Smith is visiting relatives and friends in Denison, Texas.

Rufus Rose, postmaster at Boggy Depot, was in Caddo on business Wednesday.

W. L. Poole, the Democratic nominee for Mayor of Durant, was in Caddo this week.

Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Lyle of Detroit, Texas are visiting the family of Capt. J. B. Lyle.

Ben Brewer, a prominent cattleman, returned from a business trip to Denison Wednesday.

J. H. Robinson of Sedalia, Missouri, representing the railroad insurance company has been in Caddo this week.

Miss Gertrude Best of Nashville, Tennessee, is in Caddo. She says she likes Caddo and will probably make it her future home.

National Secretary Homer, Senator W. G. Ward, and Representatives T. E. Folsom and M. E. Robinson returned home Sunday.

F. G. Harvey late of Denison, has rented the store building of George Ahrens opposite the Nail Hotel and put in a stock of family groceries.

A. W. Folsom and family of Bennington, passed through Caddo Thursday enroute to Emet where they will visit the family of J. Q. Adams.

License Business Aided by New Law

The recently enacted Texas law requiring persons seeking marriage license to give three days’ notice resulted in a record breaking marriage license business by L. W. Hughes, Bryan County court clerk, in June.

Of the 84 marriage licenses issued here during the month, 44 were obtained by Texas couples, and most of these 44 were secured in the last 15 days of the month as the Texas law went into effect June 15.

The highest number of licenses sold in one month before was 61 in December 1925.

The new law also provides that the men giving intention of getting married must also undergo a physical examination. The law has resulted in a steady stream of Texas young people to Oklahoma border counties during weekends. Fourteen licenses were issued here on June 30.

A New Industry

Lloyd Manning has inaugurated a new industry in Caddo. He is raising chinchilla rabbits.

This rabbit makes a very fine fur besides furnishing a toothsome meat for the table.

One pair will raise thirty young ones a year if any care is taken of them. The furs sell for about $1.50 each and the rabbit meat is worth a dollar. So it can readily be seen that the industry will prove profitable.

Meat is getting scarce, hogs and cattle are high, so are chickens, wild animals for fur are almost gone, so domestic raising is necessary if women are to continue wearing furs in summertime (error?).

The end of the rainbow is right where you are- if you can see it. It seems to the Herald that more people could engage in this industry with profit.

Mr. Manning has about 70 of these animals. They are easily kept, and feed mostly on vegetables and grain.

We learn that a bill was introduced in the Choctaw Council and passed the Senate, indicating a punishment of two hundred lashes on the bare back of any white man who should marry in this country without having remained her the time prescribed by law- two years- or who should evade the law by eloping with his lady love to an adjoining state or territory and having the knot tied beyond our limits.

A few days ago while a sister of Timothy Dwight was at church her house and its entire contents were consumed by fire.

We hope Ben Carter will soon have his mill running for it does seem we are to get not lumber till then.

H. T. Ahrens is building a frame store room on his East Buffalo Street lot.

Mr. and Mrs. McCurty, from Durant, are visiting their daughter, Mrs. R. B. McBee.

Mr. and Mrs. Vincent, from Quanah, Texas are visiting their daughter, Mrs. I. G. Abney.

W. M. Parks is building a two-room addition to his residence on West Buffalo Street.

Prof. Preston was here form Preston City Saturday.

A sock social was given at the home of G. A. Pate last Friday night.

W. M. Parks has purchased 100 feet on Main Street from C. A. Bilbo, consideration being $2,200.

W. E. Guess moved his traction engine to Caney last week and will assist in sawing rough lumber.

Mrs. R. L. Allen and daughter are visiting relatives inn Bells and other north Texas towns this week.

Miss Santa Wright went to visit friends at Whitewright last Thursday. She returned to Caddo Tuesday.

John Walker arrived Monday from Lehigh and joined his folks here. He is the son of Samuel Walker, our grocery man.

Mrs. J. C. Parker, who has been attending the bedside of her mother at Durant, returned home Wednesday accompanied by her mother who is yet very ill.

Carl Y. Semple was here from Coalgate Tuesday attending to business. Carl is an old Caddo boy and his friends here are glad to see him occasionally.

S. N. B. Williams, who for some time has been a substantial farer living at Nida, left last week to return to Texas.

There will be a box supper at the Old Bennington School house Friday night, December 20^th for the benefit of said school house.

A number of couples of young people gathered at the hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hill Wednesday night and at once began to enjoy themselves.

R. D. Morrison and family from Hunt County, Texas, have arrived in Caddo and will make their home near here. Mr. Morrison is a prosperous substantial farmer, the kind that make good citizens in any county.

Died: Mrs. J. B. Walker, aged 84 years, died last Saturday evening and was buried Sunday. It will be remember her aged husband died Thanksgiving Day and she not long survived him. Every attention was paid by neighbors and friends.

H. W. Grant has moved out here from Kentucky. His relative, Mr. Honchia, living near Blue, had sent him The Caddo Herald for some time and through it he learned much of this country and decided to come out. He is a welcome addition to the citizenships of the country.

Last Friday noon, while attempting to eject a smaller loaded shell from his shotgun with a rod, the shell exploded driving the rod through the flesh between the thumb and forefinger of Mr. J. F. Lamb’s right hand then through the ceiling of his kitchen. Several shots also took effect in his hand. The wound was a painful one though it will not prove dangerous.

Married: Mr. J. W. Tigert and Mrs. Annie Arnette were married in the store of Arnold & Attaway Tuesday evening in the presence of quite a crowd of curious onlookers, Rev. Forest Maddox officiating. The young people were not abashed by them however so the knot was tied. Rev. Maddox then asked if there were others in the crowed who wished to be married. None responded

Supt. T. W. Hunter, Prof. S. L. Morley, Miss Sue Willie Ikard, and Miss Ida Folsom of Armstrong Academy were in the city Saturday.

Mrs. Bettie Stephens, living at the Nail crossing on Blue, passed through the city Saturday enroute to Whitewright to see her son, Thomas, who is very sick.

John Norman, Felix Willis, and C. W. Arnold left Caddo Tuesday for Leavenworth, Kansas where they go to enlist in the army, making six that have left our town to fight the Filipinos. James A. Lander, and Bankston Johnson have enlisted in the army and will go to fight the Filipinos.

J. P. Stanfield and J. D. Cleveland of Jackson were in the city Monday with cotton.

Born: Mr. and Mrs. Jim McGrew are the proud parents of a 10-lb. boy baby born September 13^th.

Mrs. Edna Long and Miss Mae Kyle have returned to the city after an absence of more than a month.

A.M. Russell and Mrs. F. F. Tracy left Wednesday for Argyle, Texas where they go to visit relatives.

R. O. Rose of Boggy Depot, who has been spending several days in Texas, returned home Saturday via Caddo.

Dr. Kendrick resigned from the Choctaw Medical Board recently and Dr. McClendon was reappointed to the place.

A.J. Lauderdale, of Albany, and J. S. Creech, of Wade, who have been attending court at Atoka passed through t he city Saturday enroute home.

W. S. Markham of Surry, Texas has been here this week. Mr. Markham is related to the Markham Bros. of Caddo. He is desirous of finding a suitable town in which to establish a permanent school. He now has charge of the Surry Public School assisted by O. L. Davidson. Their intention is to teach an eight month session and then come to the Territory.

Miss Mary Dobson, a teacher of Bloomfield Academy, who has charge of the art class, after spending the vacation with the family of her brother, J. H. Dobson, returned to the Academy Saturday to her position. A very well executed hunting scene by the talented lady ornaments one of the show windows at Smith & Swinney’s Drug Store and attracts much attention.

Tuesday fire destroyed the house and outhouses belonging to Sam Maytubby located just north of the business part of Caddo. The house was occupied by the family of D. O. Beard and originated in the smokehouse during the absence of the family. The furniture was all saved. The residence of Dr. Hamilton adjoining was saved with difficulty. Sparks form the fired ignited the McCoy Gin, but the fire was extinguished.

 Mr. and Mrs. McIntyre, movers from Waller county, Texas, camped on the south bank of Blue last Monday night. In the morning when Mr. McIntyre arose to make a fire he discovered an infant apparently three or four days old in a box near his camp. Mr. McIntyre states from appearance it had been brought in a two horse conveyance, but could discover no tracks except of the vehicle and horses and thinks that the party who left it there set it out of the carriage without getting out. One of the tracks made by one of the horses indicated a broken shoe, half gone; another hoof has grown out in front; the other seemed to be unshod. Mr. and Mrs. McIntrye brought the child to Caddo and gave it to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. It is a pretty little girl and has kept quiet ever since it was discovered. When discovered, it was attired in a neat white dress large enough for a girl of two or three years and wrapped in a piece of red flannel. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson have no children and welcome the little stranger to their home.

Married: Miss Sudie McAlester, daughter of J. J. McAlester, was married recently to a clerk in the general offices of the C. O. & G. Railroad. Miss Sudie has long been considered the belle of the Choctaw Nation. Mr. Fitzgerald is a young man of rare business qualifications and has held a prominent position with the M. K. & T. and has recently been promoted to the position of chief clerk of the local treasurer of the C. O. & G. Railroad at this place. Mr. Fitzgerald is well known and well liked by all.

I’ve been reading many of the court records pertaining to guardianship of minors. Very often these records, with their lists of widows and orphans provide names or even dates needed by family genealogists. Miss Minnie Hayes has accepted a position at the store of W. J. Moon.

C. W. Edens from Bokchito was here Wednesday attending to business.

H. M. Dunlap attended the Bankers Convention at Oklahoma City last Friday and Saturday.

J. A. King was in Caddo Saturday from Jackson. He has moved to Boswell.

Mrs. J. H. Hogan left Sunday for several days visit to relatives at Brookston, Texas.

R. D. Morrison returned Tuesdays from a visit to his old home at Searcy, Arkansas.

J. F. Lamb has just received several cars of new furniture.

Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Impson and children from Bokchito were here Saturday and Sunday.

Dr. J. S. Gray, from Matoy, paid The Herald a pleasant call Monday.

J. M. White, formerly connected with The Herald, passed through here Tuesday.

The famous Georgia Minstrels will show at the opera house Tuesday night.

The Choctaw Hardware Company has made an addition to their store adjoining the bank.

Rev. Threadgill will preach next Sunday morning at the Methodist Church South.

Deputy J. L. Smith was here this week visiting relatives and old friends from Chickasha.

Born: An 8-lb. girl arrived at the home of C. F. Hacker in Caddo Friday. Mother and little one are doing well.

J. H. Dobson was here from Emet Wednesday attending to business and renewing his acquaintances with our people.

W. H. Masterson, wife and children, and Richard Boydston, from Anadarko, O. T. arrived Sunday to attend the obsequies of their father.

Shannon Wood, sister, and mother, arrived in Caddo this week. They have rented the Hampton place and he will cultivate it the coming year. We welcome them.

John Culloch, architect, was in the city Tuesday from Sherman. He has furnished plans for the residence of H. T. Chiles and will prepare plans for the new building of the Tribal Bank & Trust Co.

The Tribal Bank & Trust Co. have bought the corner lot of C. A. Hancock and will immediately begin the erection of a fine substantial banking house thereon. The stock is being rapidly subscribed and the business will be in full swing by the first of the year.

Samuel Walker and family have moved from the Hampton house east of town to the Harvey Phelps place on west Buffalo Street. J. C. Hampton has moved his family into the house vacated by them.

Tuesday Smith, Cobb & Pace closed a deal with Mrs. Herman Hauer by which she sold them two lots on west Buffalo Street directly west of their establishment. We learn they contemplate building thereon a fine four store brick.

 

John Boydston Dead

Last Friday at six o’clock, at the home in Caddo of Tom Boydston, John Boydston, aged 79 years and 8 months died very suddenly. For a number of years deceased had been sorely afflicted with paralysis, but was some better the day of his death. He was seated on the bed, when with a sudden gasp, died.

Deceased was born in Tennessee nearly 80 years ago and moved to the Indian Territory about 30 years ago; has lived in Caddo during this time and was a well known, honored, and respected citizen. Was the father of 14 children, twelve of whom survive him as follows: George, William, Frank, Robert, Tom, Randolph, Richard, Ben, and Milton Boydston, and Mesdames M. M. Impson, W. H. Masterson, and A. C. Joyce.

The funeral services were held at the Caddo Cemetery Sunday evening at 3 o’clock attended by a large number of friends, relatives, and acquaintances. The services were conducted by Rev. I. T. Underwood.

This year the boys basketball team won District and Regional Champs. Mildred Draper Sims made All-State basketball. The seniors made the largest contribution to the Red Cross Campaign. They won a one-half day holiday. Some went fishing, shopping and some fooled around town. The seniors had a class play which was "The Campus Quarantine". It was a big success. Earnest Smith caused a lot of trouble in Mrs. Pate's class, especially when the helicopters would go overhead.
