Election Betting Baneful Influence

                The Herald wishes that both parties in an election bet should lose the money- and more; but that is not possible and it is almost as impossible to convict election betters. This is a baneful influence on elections. Bets serve to severe the voters from the merits of the men and to commercial the election work.             

In the recent election there were many bets made, perhaps not so many as has been rumored; still there was considerable betting until it over shadowed the importance of several races. The Herald has no sympathy for the man who bets and loses and has no congratulations for the man who wins. Betting has won and lost many races in the past and it is such bad influence upon elections that the legislature has passed laws with severe penalties.

Betting neither emphasizes ones influence nor improves their morals. Some men think their opinion carries no weight unless it is accompanied by a wager.

We have heard of men who lost heavily in the last primary. The family needs this money for support but it is gone- and the fellow ought to have lost it. Officers cannot stop it; courts cannot stop it unless people will testify. Public opinion can stop it if it seeks to make itself felt by ostracizing those who do bet.

I wish to express my deepest appreciation to my friends who gave me such a splendid vote for County Clerk. My one ambition will be to merit the confidence so generously imposed on me. A.& M. Special

 

The advertised special of the A. & M. College arrived on time in Caddo Wednesday at noon. The train was greeted by a very large crowd, much larger than was expected.

There were speeches made by professors of the college relating to live stock, poultry, seed selection and horticulture. The farmers listened with interest and no doubt will profit by the suggestions they made.

The exhibit cars were filled with many exhibits of seed, poultry, live stock, fruit and other things of interest to the farmers. The women and children also were shown through the exhibit train and they seemed greatly interested.

A feature of the occasion was the young Percheron colt belonging to C. V. Ellis which the stock judges of the college admitted had many points superior to those belonging to the college. This colt is 22 months old, weighs 1,300 pounds and already does a large amount of work. Mr. Slayton also had on exhibition his fine saddle and harness stallion which was pronounced a very fine specimen by Mr. Woodson, superintendent of the farm demonstration department.

Mr. Woodson also praised very highly the results obtained by Mr. Phelps who conducts a part of this farm under direction of the A. & M. College. Mr. Phelps has made several experiments in farm work and has made good money by it. He was awarded second prize for cotton at the Oklahoma State Fair at Oklahoma City last fall.

The Herald believes the visit of this train has been of benefit to Caddo. We know it will result in good if our farmers will act on the advice given them. The literature distributed by the professors was eagerly secured and no doubt will be read.

Miss Alice Hocker has gone to Clifton, Texas to visit relatives.

Miss Mary Keynon has returned from a visit to relatives in Denison.

J. N. Shofner left yesterday for a business trip to Huntington, Texas.

Miss Lucy Grimes and Cecil Bilbo of Durant were in our city Wednesday morning.

Mrs. E. E. Thompson spent a few days with her parents in Denison last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben Siegel visited Mr. and Mrs. Jake Amsel in Durant Wednesday.

J. A. Wood and son, Adolphus, made a business trip to Hugo Saturday, returning Monday.

Mrs. J. M. Turner came up from Durant Wednesday to visit her son and family, J. S. Turner.

Mrs. W. P. Wood returned to her home in Shawnee Sunday after a visit here with her sister Mrs. J. K. Bass and family.

I.Schaffer went to Durant Wednesday to attend the funeral of Miss Pauline Amsel who was so foully murdered that morning.

Miss Minnie Markham went to Soper, Ok. Tuesday to visit relatives. She was accompanied as far as Durant by Mrs. C. O. Markham.

Mrs. L. C. Leflore was down form Atoka last Saturday to attend the open session of the Woman’ Club. She was the guest of Mrs. Jim Goddard.

Carl Beaty was in the city from Durant Wednesday.

Co. T. P. Memminger was in town Wednesday on business.

Sam Maytubby Jr. is home from a two week’s vacation to the mountains of Arkansas.

Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Beaird are in Ada this week attending the session of the Methodist Annual Conference.

Installation services will be held at the Presbyterian Church Sunday morning. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Mrs. Bill Conwell and children returned Friday from a visit with her sister, Mrs. Gus Steagall and family at Ft. Worth.

Mrs. G. A. Crossett entertained the Junior League at her home from 4 to 5:30 o’clock Monday afternoon. The young people surely enjoyed themselves.

The Woman’s Missionary Society will meet with Mrs. J. C. Hogan and Mrs. D. M. Wilson at the home of the former next Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

Last Friday night the young folks of the younger set were entertained at the home of Mrs. C. A. Bilbo. The enjoyments of the occasion were such as no other crowd ever had.

Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Collier have moved to Caddo from Durant, and are living in the E. B. Maytubby home. Mr. Collier is the new owner of the Caddo light plant and will take active management of the business.

A slow rain began falling Thursday morning and continued all day. It will put the ground in better shape for winter plowing and be a benefit all round. It's the first rain we’ve had of any consequence since August.
