Caddo Housewives Attend Cooking School Wednesday

The sweet aroma of baking ham mixed with vegetables was the greeting to the group of women who attended the Oklahoma Gas & Electric Co. cooking school at the Legion Hut Wednesday afternoon. Those who declared that they weren’t hungry soon became so when Miss Kathleen Henry, supervisor of the Home Service department and instructor for the school began bringing forth the many delicacies cooked in the electric cookers.

Twenty-five women came to learn more in the art of cookery and three of these were awarded prizes, prizes that were prepared by Miss Henry in her demonstrations. Mrs. J. A. Davis received a complete meal prepared by the broiling method. Mrs. J. C. Davison was presented an angel food cake and Mrs. W. H. Rudisill an entire meal with a baked ham as the center of attraction.

Miss Henry, who has given demonstrations here before, and who makes it a point to visit individual homes as a part of her work, has many friends in Caddo who look forward to her demonstrations. She is assisting in a campaign for bringing electric cookery to the local housewife

 

Mose Downing

M. G. Downing Died at his Home Thursday Morning

 

At 9:00 o’clock Thursday morning Mose G. Downing died at his home in Caddo following a long intermittent illness.

Mose Downing is a member of a prominent Choctaw family. He lived in Caddo and Atoka all his life, engaged in farming and merchandising during the years until he retired about five years ago.

Funeral services will be held in the Caddo Baptist Church today, Friday at 3:00 p.m. Burial in Caddo cemetery. Rev. J. B. Kirk, the pastor will conduct the services.

He was about 70 years of age, is survived by his wife, one son, Alton; three daughters: Mrs. Harper of Dallas, Mrs. McCreary of Dundee, and Mrs. Allen of Chickasha and several grandchildren.

Many friends the family had and the children are here for the funeral and comfort to their mother in her grief.

Mr. Downing had a heart trouble of long standing which from time to time recurred.

Lewis T. Martin wants to be the next County Judge

We are authorized this week to announce the name of Lewis T. Martin as a candidate for County Judge of Bryan County subject to the action of the democratic primary, July 12^th.

Mr. Martin has served the past four years as assistant to B. W. Carter in the county attorney’s office and feels that he is entitled to a promotion to be the next judge.

Mr. Martin is well known to the citizens of Caddo and is only letting his wishes be known at this time and will have a full and complete statement to make at a later time.

 

Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts will meet Tuesday night. All Scouts are urged to be present.

Intermediate G. A.s

The Intermediate G. A.s met at the home of Mrs. Warner Adair last Monday with 14 members present. Gertrude Sims was leader of the program. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess.

 

Baptist W. M. U.

Circle 4 met at Mrs. Carlton’s Feb. 15^th with 4 members present. The meeting was opened with prayer by Mrs. Cochran.

Mrs. Ruel Choate gave the scripture reading from I Tim. 4:1-8 and Matt. 5:12.

Minutes were read and approved.

Mrs. Cochran taught the II chapter of Personal Service Guide.

Mrs. Carlton was selected as the leader for our next meeting to be held Feb. 22 at the home of Mrs. Ruel Choate.

Comment on Current Events

It is stated that Father J. S. Murrow, of Atoka, age 86 years, was married Sept. 6. This item revives the old question: “When does a man get too old to marry?”

 

Meeting Closed

Rev. Hotchkin closed the meeting he had been holding at the Presbyterian Church, Tuesday night. Throughout the meeting there has been splendid interest in all the services and much benefit has resulted to all the people.

 

Has Stolen Goods

Justice Braudrick is holding several hundred dollars worth of dry goods that he thinks has been stolen. It consists of dresses, skirts, etc. and was found by Mr. Covey, who lives just north of town in Atoka County.

The justice has notified officers of various counties, but the goods have not been claimed and he is too busy with his office to start a dry goods store, so he wants the owner to come and get them.

Welcome New Citizens

S. H. Sullivan will move to Caddo from Durant this week and occupy the Orth Green home. Mr. Sullivan is manager of the new Ford agency established in the Schwartz building in Caddo.

The Herald is glad both to welcome this excellent family and this new business in Caddo, and we trust that they will be well pleased with Caddo.

Mr. Green, who has been prescriptionist with W. F. Dodd the past two years, goes to Atoka to work there. We shall of course, miss this excellent family, but wish them much happiness and prosperity in their new home.

Caddo Motor Co.

This new enterprise has nicely fitted up their sales room in the Schwartz building; a complete stock of Ford parts has been received and is now ready for sale. Every part of a Ford can be secured in a minute.

            Mr. Sullivan, the manager, is an affable, energetic individual and is a distinct asset to the business interests of the town. He is at all times glad to greet the people.

            Several cars already have been sold. Their stock at all times will be complete. Another thing: This company gives Ford service, so that the new owner of a car gets what little adjustments he needs by expert Ford men, free of charge.

Neighbors and Roads, 1910

I suppose if you had a good map and a better sense of direction than mine, you could figure out exactly where each of these families lived. I have a general idea, and I will just be happy with that. Also keep in mind that at this time road work was the responsibility of those along the road.

Good Roads and Rural Routes

There are two proposed routes that are comparatively complete and ready for the petitioning rural service. By some more work we can command the consideration of the department. The petitions will not be started out any more until the roads are ready for inspection. Then we can get behind the respective petitions and be strong in our statements.

Unless all of the patrons of the said routes will take hold and help, we will never get the routes. If we want the accommodations and unite our efforts, we can sure get them where they are of such need.

The routes are described as follows: First, the Start Route Road to the Kenefick School house, thence south by Ira Smith’s place to Mr. Holcomb’s, thence east to the section line running north and south between B. K Pate and James Paddock on which it turns south one mile, then west to Mr. Hibdon’s, then south to the Caddo and Durant road, then west to the Katy R. R. along which it runs south to the east and west section line one mile south of the Township line, thence east to W. R. Damron’s. From there north to Caddo on the section line.

The second route mentioned is to run from Caddo east to the Baxter place, then south to Mrs. L. L. Robinson’s home, then east by Carl Folsom’s and W. W. Baxter to Bub Folsom’s farm, North-West corner, then north one mile, then east one mile, then north two miles by W. F. Flowers, then east by H. C. Hatcher’s, then north by H. H. Phelps and between the Freeny and the Turnbull farms. Thence east by B. P. Farmers and A. B. Fortner’s and between Uncle J. Beck and C. M. Reeves, then south to the Franklin School House, and west into Caddo as the road runs. Now, said routes are absolutely necessary to the patrons. They will be inducive to the good phone systems that are being planned and will help to make happy homes and up-to-date farmers and neighbors.

Don’t leave the completion of the matter for the other fellow but let us all take an interest in it and we will appreciate it the more when we get it. U. S. Markham

Correction

My apologies to those of you who own a copy of Fat Men and Fabulous Ladies. There is a mistake on pages 196-97 which needs to be corrected. I inadvertently switched the information for two women. Mary Powell was Mary Ellender Jennings, daughter of Israel Jennings and Ruth Crawford. Josiah was Ruth’s father, not Mary’s. As always I am happy to make corrections, and the new printings of the book will have the corrections.
