Moving Around

 

Moran & Meadows have moved their grocery store to the McCoy corner, where they have much more room than before, and where they will be delighted to have you come and see them.

O. C. Gramley has moved the White House Grocery into the room vacated by Moran & Meadows.

C. H. Rice has moved his store into his own building on Main Street, on the highway toward the depot. He also has put in a filling station there.

Workmen are fast getting the Hull building ready for use. Hodges & Roach will move their barbershop into it when finished.

J. A. Amyett is putting in a stock of confectionaries and periodicals at the post office.

W. W. Baxter and C. D. Robinson were Bokchito visitors Sunday.

Mrs. P. L. Rogers visited the family of C. L. Rogers in Caney Saturday.

Miss Minnie Alice Carraway is here from Mineola, Texas, visiting relatives.

Buel Braudrick has purchased the interest of G. C. Braudrick in the market.

Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Maytubby left Wednesday for a two weeks outing in the Ozarks.

Ben Risner was here last Friday in the interest of his race for sheriff of Bryan County.

G. A. Crossett and Ira L. Smith were visiting in Bennington and Bokchito last Saturday.

Mrs. Roland Harris and children and little Miss Myrtle Harris were shopping in Durant Saturday.

Rev. M. A. Cassidy and family left Monday for an outing on Pennington Creek near Tishomingo.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Matthews were here from Durant Sunday visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Hancock.

Dr. L. M. Nettleton, Earnest Pitchlynn, and G. A. Crossett were Durant visitors last Friday night.

Jack Duncan is back at his place in McIntosh’s store after a two week’s vacation in the mountains.

Judge E. F. Lester will speak in Durant Friday evening. Everybody is cordially invited to hear him.

Peter Paul Pitchlynn left Wednesday night to attend school at Haskell Institute at Lawrence, Kansas.

Mrs. Tom Gross and little daughter left Saturday for St. Louis to spend several weeks with relatives.

Mrs. W. R. Crossett left Tuesday to spend a week or so with her daughter, Mrs. Ben Payne at Wapanucka.

Mr. and Mrs. Ross Bonner went to Durant Hospital Tuesday where Mrs. Bonner is undergoing treatment.

Wes. L. Robertson returned Sunday from Oklahoma City where he has been visiting the past two weeks.

Dan Collins was campaigning in Caddo last Saturday. He is receiving much support in his race for Sheriff.

Walter Baxter and Coleman Robinson were attending the county convention in Atoka last Friday and Saturday.

Mrs. Kate Harris and daughter, Miss Rady, spent last weekend in Durant with Mrs. Harris’ brother, C. J. Allen.

Quite a number of Caddo folks went to Durant Sunday afternoon to see the aviation circus. Many were the thrills they got.

W. H. Yeats and Roy Gray were in Caddo Tuesday hauling goods for the Matoy picnic which will be held Friday and Saturday.

Miss Alta Roach and her sister, Mrs. Dodd, were here last weekend from Sherman visit in their parents Mr. and Mrs. Roach.

Earney Freeman, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis at Sherman, is reported doing fine and is expected home this weekend.

Born at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Craghead, Tuesday night, a fine young man. They named him Howell Leon. He got here in time to vote.

The Ladies of the Baptist Church will serve fried chicken dinner downtown Saturday the 19^th. Everybody is cordially invited to patronize them.

Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hogan returned Tuesday from Durant where they had been for operation for their little daughter, Virginia. She is home now and doing nicely.

District judge E. F. Lester, the democratic candidate for Justice of the Supreme Court is opposed only by the Farm Laborite candidate in the primary. Latimer County News Democrat

At the Methodist Church Sunday evening the League had charge of the services. A large crowd was present to hear them. The young leaguers performed their parts well and many favorable comments have been about them. 

At the Ku Klux meeting Tuesday night in Zion’s pasture, east of town, the sum of $31.70 was realized net from the sale of ice cream. This amount was given to Mrs. George Tigert who was recently widowed.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim C. Styron arrived Sunday from Los Angeles, Calif. to spend several weeks with homefolks. Jim was recently married to a California young woman and his hosts of friends here are congratulating them.

Mrs. Jas. Latimore and daughter, Miss Katie, arrived here Friday afternoon from Leachville, Arkansas to spend the summer. Miss Katie left Monday morning with Rev. H. W. Hanselman and family and Miss Mary Jackson for Headley, Texas, where Rev. Hanselman will conduct a revival.

Presbyterians Pay Church Debt

Early in the spring of 1921 the Presbyterians had a chapel built on the north side of Buffalo Street, close to the business part of town; when completed there was $1,000 indebtedness on the building. By hard work the ladies of the church reduced the debt to about $400 on December 1^st.

In May Rev. Beasley, a student form Richmond, Va. was called as pastor. Being an energetic young man, he helped the ladies all he could with their work, besides organizing the Boy Scouts Club, and labored with them constantly almost up to time of his departure. He did not neglect any ministerial duties as he visited the sick and afflicted, conducted funerals, and by his efforts the church membership was increased from thirty-two to ninety. And another thing not to be overlooked: he did not permit the church “war department” to bother him in the least.

Notwithstanding all his clerical labors he had one great object in view- not to go away to better qualify himself for his chosen life work until the church was out of debt. Perhaps he may have considered this act as the acid test of his fitness. 

Friday evening Rev. Hotchkin of Durant came up to help Rev. Beasley conduct a meeting at which time an effort was to be made to close a gap of forty odd dollars and clear the church of debt. The effort was successful, the closing scene dramatic. Mrs. J. T. Petty handed the check for final payment to Mr. H. T. Chiles. In return receiving a receipt in full with notes of indebtedness and while Rev. Beasley held the paper she lit a match that set fire to the papers and burned them to ashes, then the congregation sang “Praise God From Whom All Blessing Flow”.

There were three additions to the church- two by letter, one by baptism.

Rev. Beasley left Sunday afternoon for New York City to attend White Theological Seminary and may be absent two or three months. In the meanwhile Rev. Hotchkin will conduct services the second and fourth Sunday of each month.

A Pioneer Dies

At her home in Caddo last Thursday noon, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gross died after a long illness. The remains were buried in Caddo Cemetery Friday afternoon at 2:30. Funeral services were had at the home conducted by Rev. Naylor, pastor of the Methodist church of which she had been a lifelong member.

Mrs. Gross has suffered nearly three years with cancer. She bore the intense pain with fortitude, calmly and confidently awaiting her call to come home. All that medical science and loving hands could do was done for her comfort and relief. She was 71 years of age. Six years ago her husband died. She is survived by four children- J. G. and T. J. Gross and Mrs. Ida Shelby of Caddo, and Mrs. Bob Bell of Madill.

Mrs. Gross was one of the early settlers of Caddo. She raised her family here; was a member of the Methodist church, faithful to its teachings and practices. She was a good neighbor, a good mother. During her long sufferings she never complained. She humbly bowed to the will of the Master, trusting him all the way through.

In such a life as hers we have the Christian spirit exemplified to the perfection of faith and works. The world has been benefited by her life and the glory world enriched by her death. “Blessed are they who die in the Lord.”

We, the children of Mrs. Gross do not know how to express our appreciation and thanks to the many who were so thoughtful and helpful to us during the illness of our mother. Nobody could have done more; nobody could have been more helpful than the people of Caddo. It having appeared to the session that Sally Ann Batiste, a member of this church, had for a long time practiced the sin of lying, and that she has still persisted in her sinful conduct, therefore resolved that she be suspended from all the privileges of the church and that unless she manifest suitable repentance, her relation to this church must cease.

Betsey and Lasti presented themselves before the session as candidates for admission to the church, but as both of them were very young, after conversation with them and suitable encouragement, resolved that their case be deferred till some further opportunity. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Dowd were visiting friends in Norman and Oklahoma City last weekend.

Max Meadows is now making his home here after having worked in Seminole the past year.

Mr. and Mrs. Preston Snell and little son were here from High, Texas visiting homefolks last Sunday.

O. R. Smith, Hugh Huddleston, Weldon McGraw and Barney Wood were in Durant Saturday serving as jurymen.

Mr. and Mrs. Buck Freeny are in Oklahoma City this week where Mrs. Freeny will undergo medical treatment.

J. F. Christian, Jr. and Kay White of Hot Springs, Arkansas have been visiting relatives and friends here the past week.

Ed L. Spears and S. H. Nelson, with the State Board of Agriculture at Oklahoma City, were business visitors in Caddo last Saturday afternoon.

M. B. and Willie Taylor were called to Pilot Point, Texas last Friday to attend the funeral of Bud Taylor, a cousin of the former. Deceased was a former resident of Caddo and Mr. Taylor’s friends here extend him sympathy at this time.

Misses Bebe Chiles and Hannah Johnson are home from C. I. A. at Denison, Texas. They are here for their Easter vacation. They were accompanied home by Miss Grace Wamel of Bastrop, Texas and she will be their guest here during their vacation.

Word has been received here of the marriage of Earl Overstreet which occurred on March 20^th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Earl is a Caddo raised boy and is well remembered here. Earl is now district auditor for a large oil company and is now stationed at Salt Lake City.

Miss Dortha Allen left Tuesday for Fort Sill where she is to take a civil service examination as typist.

Sheriff Bud Taylor and our county attorney, Bill Steger, were business visitors in Caddo Saturday morning.

Mrs. Homer Geter and son of McAlester, were here for Mother’s Day with her mother, Mrs. Cecil Womble.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hill were visiting homefolks and friends in Caddo last weekend from their home in Atoka.

Mrs. James Curry and daughter of Lawton are visitors in Caddo this week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C Semple.

Mr. and Mrs. James Motes and sons of Corpus Christi, Tex. were in Caddo Sunday visiting his sister, Mrs. J. C. Petty and family.

Miss Frances Cornell was in Caddo Thursday evening from her home in Denison to attend the high school commencement exercises.

The Woman’s Music and Literary Club will meet Saturday afternoon, May 16 at 8, at the home of Mrs. Jim Goddard. All members are urged by Mrs. McCalman, the president, to be on hand.

A.H. Hewitt and T-Bone McDonald were visitors in Caddo Saturday form Durant, getting things organized for the USO drive Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Henry of Wilson were in Caddo last weekend, being called here by the serious illness of his mother Mrs. Rebecca Henry.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ray Mayfield and children from Atoka, were visiting here Sunday in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Meadows.

Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Owens, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Hagood and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Max Meadows and daughter, all of Durant, were in Caddo Sunday to spend Mother’s Day with homefolks and friends.

Rev. R. L. Hunnicutt, Mrs. Fred Washington, Mrs. M. A. Cassidy, and Myra Jean Guthrie attended the district conference of the Methodist churches of the Durant district being held with the Idabel church Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mrs. R. L. Pace returned Sunday from a visit with her sons in Fort Smith, Ark. She was accompanied home by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Alton Pace and daughter who will visit relatives and friends here and in Kenefick.

All of the Caddo teachers for the past school year who are not to remain in Caddo for the summer have gone to their respective homes to await the starting of the summer term of school which is scheduled to start sometime near the middle of July.

Bill Semple reported to Kelly Field at San Antonio Monday morning where he will be an aviation cadet in the army. He has just recently returned from Boston where he visited his former buddies in the 45^th division and his brother, Capt. Frank B. Semple, and Mrs. Semple.

Mrs. Charles Reagan of Dallas, Texas is in Caddo this week as the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Williamson, and other relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Pete Freeny and daughter of Oklahoma City were visitors with homefolks and friends in and near Caddo the past weekend. They were accompanied home by Clay Watson who had been a business visitor in the City for a few days. 

 

I will be on vacation for two weeks! See you back here on the 23rd.
