Civics and Lions Celebrate July 4

The Civic Club and the Lions’ Club will celebrate July 4^th at Lions Park, it was decided at Tuesday’s luncheon. Franks, Boone, and H. F. Bass were appointed the committee to confer with the committee from the Civic Club.

The day generally will be celebrated and though it falls this year on Saturday, Caddo will not be lagging in the matter of patriotism. The matter of Defense Day also was referred to this committee.

The bell won by the Club was presented by J. L. Boland. It is of nice appearance and very fine tone.

It was decided to have Ladies’ Night the evening of July 7.

Carroll Franks asked and received the aid of the Lions in getting up Caddo’s quota of the American Legion Endowment Fund. Messrs. Cassidy, Boland, and Henry Bass were appointed to assist the Legion.

The matter of complying with fire protection requirements was taken up and finally referred to committee of Davison, Grayson, Boland, and Sargent.

 

Jackson Risner

I often look for particular people in the court records. And I often stumble across others who catch my eye for no particular reason. Such is the case with Jackson Risner. I was looking at entries for the Turnbull family and came across Mr. Risner’s death. I know nothing about him. I just like his name! His case takes up several pages of court records and many Caddo people are involved in the probate of his will and the guardianship of his children.  I won’t take the time to copy all of the pages since much of it is repetitive legal terms and promises to return reports, bonds, etc. But here are the basics for anyone researching this man. And of course if a family member needs the pages I will be happy to scan them.

(Note: A quick search of my Caddo records shows Jackson listed as a juror in 1881, several Risner family members in the Caddo area,  several in the Bennington Church, and Atwood Risner as a good friend of the Turnbull family.)

“In the county and Probate Court of Blue County held on the first Monday of October 1900 at Caddo, Indian Territory, the seat of Justice of said county, you were appointed Administrator of the person and estate of Jackson Risner, deceased and his widow Harriet and children, Benjamin, Rufus, and Vester Risner of said county.”

There is a paragraph concerning the bond of Morris Smith and his duty to inventory the estate and report to the court.

Page 151- Inventory of the Estate of Jackson Risner:

Nine hundred and twenty-five head of cattle for a total of....$1,250.00

Eleven head of horses at $15.00 each...265.00

The next page concerns William Risner and his appointment as the executor of the B. McCloud estate and guardian of Myrtle McCloud, age 16. I’m not sure if William has any connection to Jackson or if the two cases just happen to be heard the same week.

 

Page 156- Bond of Harriet Pace

(bond of $100-list of sureties and judge. Note the difference in the list of children compared with the previous one.)

 

“The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said Harriet Pace was on the 3^rd day of December 1900 appointed by the County Court and by the Probate side of said County Court for the County of Blue, guardian of Adline, Benjamin, Rufus, and Vivian Risner, minors under the age of 16 years. Harriet Pace shall duly render this guardianship according to the laws of the county and nation.”

 

In September of 1901 Mr. Smith reports that he sold “7 head of 2 yr. old steers @ $18.85” and paid off some of the debts of Mr. Risner including $101 to Charles McPherren and $15 to Homer Elting.

“On this 7^th day of October, the same being the regular court day of the above styled court, the final reports of the Administrator herein came to be finally heard and acted upon and the same having been fully heard by the court. The court being fully advised in the premises, it is therefore ordered and adjudged and decreed herein as follows to wit:

That the Administrator, Morris Smith shall surrender up and deliver to the heirs of the said estate by delivering to their regularly appointed guardian all of their portion of the property of the said estate. Also all that potion belonging to the said guardian, Harriet Pace, as her individual property, all of the said property being as follows to wit:

Fifteen dry cows

Four 1-year-old heifers (River Bottom Place)

Six 1-year-old steers (Saw Mill Place)

 Nine 2-year old steers

Sixty-three 2-year-old steers (River Bottom Place)

One 3-year-old bull

One 4-year-old bull

One crippled cow

One pair of mules

100 head of hogs

Two broke horses

One mare and colt

One pony, unbroken, 3-year-old bay (Ranch Place)

 

There is also a list of the expenditures of Mrs. Risner for attorney fees, court costs, cotton seed, doctor bills, and groceries.

Miss Kate Dabney, of Bonham, spent the week in the city, the guest of Miss Fannie Lyle.

Mrs. H. T. Ahrens left Thursday for St. Louis. Her many friends regret to part with her.

Miss Bessie Floyd, of Lone Oak, Texas, who has been visiting Mrs. E. T. Hamer, returned home Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Matthews, of Jackson, were here this week to meet friends expected on the train.

Mrs. O. R. Nance left Friday for Texas. She will visit relatives in Trenton, Greenville, and Lone Oak.

Mrs. Laura Terry, who went to Wagoner to represent the Eastern Star Lodge of Caddo, returned Friday.

Died: J. M. Martin and Mrs. Walker, mother of D. Walker who lives near Bokchito, died this week. Both advanced in years.

W. A. White, living near Folsom, brought in the first bale of new cotton Wednesday from which he realized $61.89.

Miss Rhab Beaird and sister, Mrs. R. L. Simmons, who have been visiting the family of D. O. Beaird, left Friday for Lone Oak, Texas.

Miss Pearl Folsom, of Ardmore, spent several days in the city this week, the guest of her aunt Mrs. W. H. Bates, and other relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Joyce delightful entertained a party of young people last Saturday night at cards, watermelon, and cake in honor of Miss Kate Dabney.

T. M. Potts and family, consisting of sixteen persons, from western Grove, Arkansas, were here this week enroute to Colorado County, Texas, seeking a health resort.

Elder G. W. Gann, of Hunt County, Texas, held a protracted meeting near Blue Tank, five miles south of Caddo, the last two weeks, which resulted in twelve conversions and baptisms.

Our young people gave a delightful social hop at the McCoy Iron building Monday night in honor of Miss Pearl Folsom of Ardmore. A good number were present and all report a good time.

Misses Mary Howe and Phyllis Hancock returned last Friday from a visit to Miss Vista Slack at Blanchard, Okla. They report a most enjoyable visit.

A.T. Hatcher has opened a new butcher shop in the Phillips Co. building and is now ready for business. He has a complete outfit, new and up to date.

Quite a crowd of Caddoites are going to Denison tonight to attend the Elks Minstrels. The Denison bunch has cordially invited the Caddo folks to come.

Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Robinson moved into their new home, five miles southeast of town. It is one of the prettiest country homes in this part of the county. 

Mrs. Harring of Huntington, Texas, was here Monday attending the funeral of her sister, Mrs. A. E. Boydstun. She was the guest while here of her brothers, Fred and Charles Jones.

The Civic Club meets next Wednesday afternoon with Mrs. Bilbo instead of with Mrs. Bass. This is a business meeting; all new members are requested to get their names in. All members are urged to be present.

Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Beaty received from the stork a fine boy for a New Year’s gift, tho’ he didn’t arrive until the 2^nd. Mr. Beaty is deputy county treasurer, but his wife has been visiting her parents in Caddo the past month.

The Huffman stock of dry goods and groceries was moved last week to his new buildings and combined with that of Lake Brewer. The new firm of Huffman & Brewer, as soon as things are straightened out, will have a pretty combination store.

It is with a heart of gratitude that I thank the people who were so kind and thoughtful of me and mine in my recent bereavement. I shall ever hold in sweet remembrance the kind acts of friends on this occasion.  A. E. Boydstun

The new skating rink of W. H. Glasscock was completed this week. This is by far the best skating floor in this part of the country. The floor is of maple, redressed, and is laid so that there are no rough places. The building is 120x50 feet, well lighted and heated.

Miss Imogene Heyser announces a recital of her pupils at the opera house tonight (Friday) by the pupils of her expression class. The program is made up of selections by the pupils and several by Miss Heyser; one of these from “The Merchant of Venice” is especially good. The admission price of 25c and 15c is for defraying expenses.

Geo. Stevenson is somewhat of an inventor of conveniences. He has one of the most convenient farms in the county now. Recently he has provided a wire from the route line by which when the mail is placed in his box the box is made to travel the wire to his house- thence back to its post. It works well and saves going to the road to get the mail.

W. F. Dodd had word from Ardmore Monday that the well of the 1911 Oil Co. of which he is a stockholder, was under control and that as soon as storage tanks could be placed it would be allowed to flow. The strike is very rich and the owners are jubilant at their find. The company will drill other wells at once, being sure now of securing flowing wells.

 

 

Roadwork 1914

Good Road Work

Yesterday was appointed by the Good Roads Association as a day when all who possibly could do so would go out and do a day’s work on the roads.

In Caddo the response was generous while not unanimous, as it was impossible for many to leave their work.

Many of the bad places in the road were filled, so that they could be passed. Some of them required culverts so that the water could drain off. The people are thoroughly alive as to the need and benefits of good roads and we predict that another rainy spell will not find the roads in as bad condition as they were.

The town officers are insisting that the streets that were torn up by the sewer work be put in shape. This will help a whole lot.

C. E. Blessing is building the three cement crossings on Buffalo Street and by Monday these will be passable. They will be a great convenience to the public. One is at each end of the business block and one is in the center. The middle crossing is made necessary because of the extreme length of the block, it being 500 feet long. 

 

Mount Pleasant Church

This is from the book I am currently putting together. This church was in the Bennington area and a lot of these people later moved to Caddo or were related to Caddo people. It is difficult to find records from these early, early years, so I think the book will offer a lot of information for researchers.  

 

 October 28, 1849

The session met at Mount Pleasant and was opened with prayer. Present Rev. C. Kingsbury, minister, Isaac Folsom, N. Cochnauer, D. Perkins, ruling elders.

 

D. Perkins, with his wife, requested a dismission from this church and a recommendation to the Bennington Church within the bounds of which they reside. Resolved that their request be granted.

Charles C. Copeland, formerly a member of the Mountain Fork Church and now a licensed preacher, residing at Mt. Pleasant, was received as a member of this church.

Elizabeth Jones, a member of this church, having for a considerable time been guilty of the most scandalous sins, and having left this part of the country and there being no reasonable hope of reclaiming her, the session after deliberating and considering her case resolved that she no longer be a member of this church. March 10, 1850

The Session of Mt. Pleasant Church met at the usual place of worship. Opened with prayer. Present, Rev. C. Kingsbury, mod. Isaac Folsom, N. Cochnauer, C. C. Copeland, elders.

 

Amanda Dana appeared before the Session and requested a letter of dismission from this church that she might become united with the Baptist Church. Resolved that her request be granted.

Emily Smith presented herself as a candidate for admission to this church. After some conversation with her, resolved that the decision in her case be deferred till some future time. Closed with prayer. C. C. Copeland, clerk of session

 

May 25, 1850

The Session met at the usual place of worship and was opened with prayer. Present, Rev. C. C. Copeland, Elders, I. Folsom, N. Cochnauer

 

James McIntosh presented himself before the Session as a candidate for admission to the church. After examining, resolved that he be received. Closed with prayer.

 

May 26, 1850

The Session met and was opened with prayer.

 

Catherine Jones, a member of this church, appeared before the Session and confessed that she had sinned in talking improperly about her neighbors; in neglecting to pray, and to attend on the word and ordinances of God; and requested to be restored to the confidence and fellowship of the church. She appeared truly penitent and the Session resolved that she be restored.

Amanda Dana, who had received a letter of dismission from this church, appeared, returned the letter, and requested to be received again to the fellowship of the church. Resolved, that her request be granted.

Lorice Battice appeared and confessed that she had greatly sinned in a difficulty with the family with which she lived and by improper conversation. She appeared penitent and requested to be restored to the fellowship of the church. After admonition and caution, resolved, that she be restored.

Emily Smith and Jenny Cole appeared before the Session as candidates for admission to the church fellowship. After examination, resolved that they be received.

Imahetona, having received a dismission from the Bennington Church, and recommendation to the Mt. Pleasant Church, requested to be received as a member of this church. Resolved that her request be granted. Closed with prayer. C. C. Copeland, mod.

Tunk Terry was down from Quinton, Okla. the first of the week.

Mrs. Hightower has been the guest of Mrs. Cobb the past week.

Miss May Dyer of Sadler, Texas is visiting her aunt, Mrs. C. L. Lievsay.

Mrs. Sam Joels was down from Atoka last week, visiting Mrs. Ben Siegel.

We have had two weeks of nice weather, yet the streets are still torn up with the sewer ditches. The excuse heretofore has been that it was too wet. Won’t be long now until they will say it’s too dry. The Herald thinks the streets ought to be put in shape before more bad weather sets in.

Don’t forget to go to A. C. Chaney’s office and get a beautiful calendar for 1914.

Monday a fine girl came to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Brooks in Caddo.

Miss Neomi Bowman returned Monday to Sherman to resume her music studies.

A.C. Haden was here Tuesday in the interest of the State Orphans’ Home at Pryor.

Mrs. W. L. Driver from Madill is here this week visiting her daughter, Mrs. T. I. McGraw.

Miss Imogene Heyser will give a recital at the opera house tonight. Admission 25c and 15c.

You will enjoy the recital tonight by the pupil of Miss Heyser at the opera house. Be sure to attend.

Mrs. Luther Roberts entertained with a 6 o’clock luncheon last Friday honoring Mrs. Vivia Locke of Antlers.

J. E. Mattox has bought a half interest in the grocery business of M. F. Haralson. He invites his friends to call and see him.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer Carroll, from Wapanucka, were the guests of the family of their brother, G. E. Carroll, in Caddo this week.

Mrs. Dick Locke and son, Wesley Robertson, were here form Antlers last week visiting friends and D. O. Nail, brother of Mrs. Locke.

At 8 o’clock Tuesday night Mr. Zen Corn and Miss Francis Harper were married by Justice Chaney in front of his home on Ainsworth Street.

Mrs. Bettie Blakeman died last Friday morning at her home in McKinney. She was the mother of Mrs. Ebb Ingle, and Mrs. Ingle was at her side when she died. Mr. Ingle went down Friday morning.

H. T. Styron returned Monday from Temple, Texas where he was with Mrs. Styron who underwent an operation. He states that Mrs. Styron stood the operation well and is now getting along nicely.

Sixty-Eight Marriage Licenses

According to the reports turned into the county administrators this month, by Court Clerk Hamilton of the Durant office, and from Bennington and Caddo branches of the county court, there were issued in the county sixty-eight marriage licenses last month. This was the greatest number of licenses ever issued in any one month since statehood.
