Mrs. Harmon Dies

Mrs. E. P. Harmon died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hirshel Hill Wednesday morning.

The remains were buried in Caddo Cemetery Wednesday afternoon. Deceased was an old time citizen of this community, having lived at Rock Spring a long time.

(Mrs. Harmon is not listed in the new cemetery records. However, on the older list there is an entry that reads “Harmon, ?”. )

 

Miss Aramenta Walker Dies

Miss Aramenta Walker died in Sherman Wednesday. Interment will be in Caddo Cemetery about 11 o’clock Friday morning, after arrival of cortege.

Deceased is a sister of Virgil Walker of Dallas, and lived in Caddo twenty-five years ago and is remembered by old time citizens very kindly.

Team, 1928

Anyone know if this is the right spelling for the coach? I would have guessed Adair rather than Alair, but stayed with the name as spelled in the paper, since it was repeated three times. I can check some other issues of the paper later.

Caddo High to Have Good Team

 

Football practice at the high school has been going on for about two weeks and the boys are rapidly getting in shape for their games, the first of which will be next Friday when they go to Durant to scrimmage the Normal freshmen.

The following boys have been coming out regularly for practice and the lineup will be strong after all the rough places have been smoothed out by Coach Alair.  At center will be Green, Rohde or Smith; guards will be taken care of by Reeves, Wood, Lacy, Robinson, and D. Boydston. At tackles will be Embry, Linch, and H. Boydston; and ends will be Sawyer, C. Geter, and H. Geter.

At quarterback will be McCreary and J. Smith, with each alternating at fullback. At halfbacks will be H. Cobb, Captain, H. Copeland and Rohde and Smith when they are not in the line.

Subs will be C. and F. Semple, Jack Geter, Castello, and J. Copeland.

The boys are rapidly adjusting themselves to their positions and new plays are given the boys every day and by the time the season opens they will make every team step.

Coach Alair is looking for games to fill all open dates on Caddo’s schedule and any school wanting games on the above open dates can arrange for same by getting in touch with G. E. Alair, coach, Caddo. 

 

Jurors

I’m listing a few jurors from the Blue County Court this morning simply because many are names from families I have researched for others this year and one- Robinson Makinto- is a name I have some interest in myself. An “Elder Makinto” is listed in the Bennington Church records, but is never given a first name. So this little clue at least gives me a lead on some possible census listings.

I also overlooked an earlier list of fines that you may find interesting.

This is not dated, but other items are listed as 1889. I have no idea why this is included in the court records, but I’m glad it is! I just wish so many words had not been unreadable.

Page 129- Rules and Regulations of the Sunday and week day and night ____school at Bethany School ______ known as Philadelphia.

Rule 1- The school shall be open at 9 o’clock each and every morning thereafter, excepting ____ and continue 2 hours every morning or six hours a day.

Rule 2-It shall be ___ of the school teacher to call ___ ___ ___ ___ attending the same ___ the commencing of each session.

Rule 3-The scholar shall be at the school house at least 15 minutes before the time for opening.

Rule 4- The scholar shall maintain perfect order during the session.

Rule5- The scholar shall never interrupt classes during recitation.

Rule 6- All laughing and whispering and talking among the scholars shall be prohibited under the penalty of being punished by the teacher.

Rule 7- Never consider any time in idle speculation or disorderly behavior, strict attention shall be given to comply with these rules.

Rule 8- There shall be no fighting or quarrelling among the scholars, either out or in the school, but use respect to each other and everybody else.

This rule may be amended or altered or subsequent changes may ___ when it is a _____.

Choctaw Court, 1858-1898

Last month I bought a copy of Court Records- Blue County Choctaw Nation, CTN 25, Volume II. It was abstracted by Wanda Ellis. It contains a lot of the court records I have come to expect and use frequently- marriages, wills, probates, guardianships, permits. However, I discovered recently that the last sections also have some records that are just a bit different- inventories and miscellaneous records- and I shall endeavor to post some of them over the next few days. Forgive me if I do not copy the sections in their entirety. I am skipping over some entries that are simply permits, lists of jurors, or redundant. (If you are looking for someone, let me know and I’ll scan through the jury listings for each year.)

I also want to take this opportunity to remind you that my latest book, Fine Men and Fashionable Ladies, The Founding Families of Caddo, Vol. 2 is also available from the library. Note: Many of the people listed in these early court records are from Caddo and others are from Bennington, Bokchito, Kenefic, and other local towns. I have noticed that many of these in the 1858-98 sections are from Bennington. My book about Old Bennington Church will be ready in a few months.

Page 43- Know all men by these present that Aron Mishintabe, as Principal is firmly bound unto David Dailey, Sheriff of Blue County, Choctaw Nation in the sum of three hundred dollars, for the payment of the above sum will truly be made. We the undersigned bind ourselves, our heirs, exec tutors, administrators, and assigns forever.

The condition of the above obligation being that the above bound, Aron Mishintabe did take, steal, and carry away one pony, property of one Limeon (Simeon?) Houston without his knowledge and consent, contrary to the laws of the Choctaw Nation, and whereas the said Aron Mishintabe shall and truly appear at the next regular March term of Circuit Court 1867 and appear before the court from day to day until discharged by said court, then the above obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

Page 44- Choctaw Nation, Blue County. To all whom these present shall come greeting, I appoint Sheriff in place of Daniel Daily, appointed by the Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation, in the year August 19^th 1867, Benjamin Pickens, Sheriff of Blue County. Know ye that whereas it appears that Benjamin J. Pickens has been duly elected as Sheriff of Blue County in the Choctaw Nation at an election held in said county on the 5^th day of August 1868. Page 271- Know by all men that we, William Jackson and Elijah Ellis, Security, are held and bound unto Nakintaga, Sheriff of Blue County, Choctaw Nation, and to his successors in office in the penal sum of $2,000.00, Two thousand dollars, for whose payment we bind ourselves, our heirs and executors and administrators and severally and firmly signed with our names and sealed with our seals this 27^th day of November 1858. The condition of this obligation is that certain negroes, namely Jim and Mary Ann, shall faithfully appear before the next probate court on the first Monday, the 6^th day of December 1858, then this obligation is to be void, otherwise to remain in full force. William Jackson and Elijah Ellis. (The entry in the book does say 1858, but the chronology would seem to indicate 1868. I will have to pull out the original microfilm at some future date and check to see which is correct.)

R. W. Wilson was a Durant visitor Monday.

A. B. McCoy was up from Durant several days this week.

Roy Riddels and A. L. Duncan were business visitors to Hugo last Thursday.

Fresh meat at Hancock’s is cheaper.

Miss Jewell Smith of near Kenefick was in Caddo Monday visiting relatives and friends.

Miss Ruth Bloom is home for the summer. She was teacher in Caney schools last year.

Clyde McCreary, student in S. T. C., was home last Sunday visiting homefolks and friends.

Remember the dead. Let me sell you a nice monument. Prices reasonable. See H. V. Westmoreland.

A.F. Manning, and son Abe, of Oklahoma City, were here last week visiting his daughter, Mrs. Fred J. Early and other relatives.

A. L. Duncan and W. A. Duncan were called to Holdenville Monday by the severe illness of an uncle. They returned Wednesday.

The Herald has a scholarship worth $75 in the Tyler Commercial College for sale to some young man or woman who wants to take a first class stenographer’s course.

The Midway school closes today. Prof. Rounsayal and Miss Owen are teachers. The school has made splendid progress this year. The Herald got out the programs for the closing.

A porch has been erected protecting the entrances of The Herald office and Dorsey’s barber shop. This makes it somewhat pleasanter these hot mornings. This is one of the coolest places in town in summer, catching all the south breezes.

Miss Onilla Ewing left Saturday for her home in Celeste, Texas. Miss Ewing has been expression teacher in Caddo school for three years and during that time has done splendid work with her pupils. She made many friends here who hated to see her leave and they all wish her well wherever she may be.

District Judge Porter Newman has appointed Mr. “Buster” Waters court stenographer to succeed Mr. Franz J. Kim who was elected county attorney of Marshal County recently to succeed the late Judge March. Mr. Waters is a nephew of Messers. Vick and Warren Phillips of Durant and a grandson of Judge Phillips.

Everyone is studying hard for exams. Of course there will be a few lucky ones, but not all.

Where’s Ray’s (Pace) trumpet? He’s gonna get a clarinet, so the rumor goes.

Society Squibs

The Caddo Junior Music Club met January 10 at the home of Margaret Jayne McGraw, with Sibyl Braudrick as hostess. In the business session we decided to have a party immediately after mid-term exams. A splendid programme was rendered, with Jayne McGraw as leader. After adjournment delicious refreshments were served by our charming hostess. Next meeting will be held at the home of Alga Moran, Feb. 14^th.

Caddo Lions Only Perfect Attendance

Caddo Lions won the attendance contest in Oklahoma, in a contest which closed May 12. This club is the only one in Oklahoma that succeeded in getting the full attendance for eight weeks. As a result the big silver bell is on its way to the Caddo Club, President Green announced Wednesday. This is quite a distinction for Caddo, for there are quite a number of lively Lions Clubs in Oklahoma. But when the Caddo bunch starts anything, they let nothing keep them from accomplishing their object.

President W. N. Green was elected delegate and W. W. Boone alternate to represent the Club at Cedar Point, Ohio, in the international Convention at the Tuesday luncheon.

Final arrangements were then made for the entertainment of the Oklahoma City Boosters.

A representative from the A. & M. extension department spoke a few minutes as did the county demonstration agent for boys and girls; each expressing appreciation for the aid Lions had always been ready to give their work.

In the club contest between the Army and Navy, the result was a tie, since neither side had a regular member absent during the period. This contest was quite spirited throughout and did much to secure the success of the club in the international contest.

Representatives from the district convention report that they were well pleased with their tirp and theat the new convention will be held with Muskogee in 1926.

 

Oklahoma City men Welcome to Caddo

Caddo put her best foot forward Wednesday morning for the visit of the Oklahoma City boosters. Fifty autos met them at the train and paraded with them through town to the top of the hill on Buffalo Street whence the parade was formed.

Gov. Ed Trapp was the principal speaker, and was listened to eagerly. The band furnished excellent music.

A large crowd of people was downtown to greet the visitors, many of whom made the remark that Caddo had given them the best and most orderly reception they had so far received. They spoke highly of the enterprise of the town and its people.

Many school children were downtown, and they were furnished nice souvenirs of the occasion.
Caddo was glad the gentlemen came and will be glad if they come again.

Gardner Family

This is a short biography from A History of Bryan County. Many of the people listed here were members of the Bennington Church and their names are mentioned prominently in my next book. It should be completed this summer.

Jeremiah Gardner

Jeremiah Gardner and Clarissa LeFlore married in 1827 in LeFleurs Bluff, Miss. A son, William, was born on Tom Bigbee River in Old Towson Co., Miss., October 1828. They came to the Choctaw Nation in 1833 over The Trail of Tears, settling at Little River, Choctaw Nation. William went to school at Wheelock, Norwalk, and New Hope. Two other children were born form this marriage- Greenwood, born Jan. 1, 1841, and Jincy (daughter) born 1852. William was appointed Treasurer and Court Clerk of Blue County- Forks of Boggy. William and Greenwood both joined the Confederate Army, but William was needed at home so he was sent back; after the war William put in a store at Armstrong Academy, but soon sold out and moved to Bennington. William and Mary had six children- Saliana, born 1850; Clarissa, born 1852, Rodolphus Cantin, born 1854; Sarah born 1856; Brazile, born 1859, died 1859; Winnie Amelia, born 1862, died 1863. William died 1891 and Mary died in 1912, all the family is buried at Old Church. Submitted by Roma Jackson
