J. T. Green was in town Monday on business.

R. A. Riddels was a Durant visitor Monday.

W. L. Guthrie had business in Dallas last week.

Dr. R. P. Dickey had business Monday in Muskogee.

Miss Bebe Chiles was guest of friends in Durant last week.

Mrs. Tom Gross and Mrs. L. M. Nettleton spend Monday in Sherman.

W. H. Attaway and Mrs. Bradly were here from near Bennington last Saturday. 

Miss Mozelle Tanner from Durant was the guest of Miss Mary Goddard last week.

Miss Laverne Thompson was here from McAlester visiting Mrs. Lake Brewer this week.

Tom Odil and son from Oklahoma City, returned home yesterday after a visit of a week with Mr. and Mrs. Odil.

Good fresh milk cow with Jersey bull calf for sale at a bargain. F. K. Freeman, route one, 2 miles south of Caddo.

Mrs. J. N. Nation, Ralph and two daughters left yesterday to spend several weeks with relatives in Louisiana.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Castleman from Westbrook, Texas, spent last week visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. McCreay.

Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Robertson were here last Saturday from Oklahoma City visiting their daughter Mrs. Guy G. Crossett.

A fine boy came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Malcom Butler at Idabel Monday. Mrs. Butler was formerly Miss Lucille Folsom.

Mrs. Foster Bailey and Miss Barbara Braudrick from Sulpher visited Mrs. J. D. Maytubby Sunday. Mrs. Bailey formerly was Miss Doris Maytubby.

Ferman Phillips was in town a while Monday. He is a candidate for re-election as representative from Atoka County and going to summer normal at Durant.

John A. Phillips was in town a while Monday. He was just back from Oklahoma City where he aided in getting the assessment of the K. O. & G. Railroad.

Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Alexander from Okemah, were in Caddo a short time Wednesday. Rev. Alexander was pastor of the Methodist church here twenty years ago.

Chas. B. Marshinger was in town a while Monday and met a great many Caddo folks who were right glad to meet him. He received assurance of much support in Caddo.

Paul Walker, who is a candidate for Corporation Commissioner, was in Caddo Monday with Judge Williams. He met quite a number of Caddo citizens in the short stay here.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Swift returned to their home at Inver Grove, Minn. Sunday taking with them Mr. M. D. Swift who has been seriously ill. Mr. Swift will make his home with them.

Mr. and Mrs. Quince Boydstun from Muskogee spent last week with his parent near Caddo. Mr. Boydstun is a Caddo boy and is now a candidate for county Judge of Muskogee County with a fine prospect of election.

Roy Riddels has accepted a place as salesman for the Collier O’Neal Chevrolet agency in Atoka and will devote his full time to the work. He will not move his family to Atoka as yet, but will spend weekends at home.

George Hodel was here from Kenefick Wednesday. He reports a visit of his brother last week from Corvall County Texas who came to Oklahoma with a young woman from Iredell to be married. Mr. Hodel reports a yield of 40 bushels of oats to the acre.

Guy G. Crossett left Sunday for Idabel where he takes charge of the McCurtain Democrat as editor and manager. Guy has been with the Herald the past two years and is well equipped for his new place and we take pleasure in commending him to the good people of McCurtain County. Mrs. Crossett will not leave for a few weeks yet.

Mammoth Catfish

 W. H. Hunter is some fisherman. He knows how and where to find them. And he generally brings home enough to supply his café.

Tuesday about noon he got word of a big fish in Blue River, and went down to see about it.

He got the fish all right. Weighed 57 pounds.

This is the largest catfish we have heard of this year, much larger than the usual run of 20-pound cats that Blue furnishes.

Emergency Landing Field is Established

Caddo has an emergency landing field now for airplanes, near the high school building. Due to the generosity of merchants who bought the materials and several young men who did the new work this was accomplished.

The specifications comply with that of national regulation for emergency fields. There is room to land any airplane and the ground has been leveled. A wind sock has been placed showing the direction of the wind.

Bismarck Rohde, Grady Sargent, L. J. Schwartz, and Macon Smith have done the principal work, while B. K. Pate used the grader several hours.

Caddo now has its town air-marked and a landing field. Thus we take our places among the progressive towns of the state.

Cooper School Notes

Miss Julia Burns and Mr. Bill Pierrot were married Monday evening at her father’s home. They are popular young people of the community and will live in Durant.

Martin Burns has a sick baby which we hope soon will recover.

There will be a Pie Supper at Cooper School, 2 miles south of Pleasant Hill schoolhouse, Thanksgiving night, to raise funds for a school Christmas tree. Everybody come and help us make Christmas a glad one for the kiddies.

Possum and taters are fine now, and with persimmons and pecans along with hickory nuts and walnuts we shall make out until spring if we can sell enough wood for groceries.

Don’t forget the pie supper.

Case No. 2- Mrs. Sarah Alexander. Petition for administrator on estate of C. W. Alexander, deceased, November 5, 1877. Sarah Alexander was appointed on January 7, 1878.

Case No. 3- Tecumpha Payton vs. Silas Ward. Dispute over house entered October 1, 1877. T. Payton was to remove the house.

Case No. 4- Petition for administrator on estate of B. F. Stedham, entered November 5, 1877. Durant Jack was appointed.

Case No. 5- Elizann Frazier vs. Ruben Durant, controversy. Entered October 2, 1877; horse given to Elizann Frazier.

Case No. 6- Petition of T. F. Folsom vs. Estate of Simeon Gardner entered December 2, 1878. Letters of administration.

Case No. 7- G. W. Thompson vs. Estate of B. F. Fuller, entered December 2, 1878. Claim against estate of B. F. Fuller $30.00.

Case No. 10- Choctaw Nation vs. Edward Hopa was entered February 3, 1879 for disturbing public school. Transferred to Circuit Court March 3, 1879.

Case No. 11- Noah Nicholas vs. Pisatubi, entered February 3, 1879. Dispute transferred to Circuit Court May 22, 1879.

Case No. 12- J. P. Atkinson vs. Simeon Gardner estate was entered February 4, 1879. Claim $13.28. Dismissed July 1880.

Case No. 13- G. W. Thompson vs. B. F. Fuller entered February 4, 1879 asking the Sheriff to hold property of the estate of F. F. Fuller until administrator was appointed. Granted April 7, 1879.

Case No. 14- Washington, Petition for administrator on the estate of Simon McCan, February 10, 1879. Washington was appointed April 7, 1879. Lewis Mechubbe and Norten Leflore, sureties.

 Case No. 15- Newton Harkins vs. Ishum Walker, guardian, April 7, 1879. Ishum Walker renewed his guardianship, May 22, 1879.

Case No. 16- Simeon Turnbull vs. Estate of Betsy Betts, April 7, 1879. Claim was for $15.00. The sum of ten dollars was allowed.

Case No. 17- J. T. S____vs. the Estate of T. Fuller, April 7, 1879. Claim $10.00.

Case No. 18- George Folsom and others- Petition asking that the will of Rachel be probated. They also asked that an administrator be appointed to carry out the intentions of said will. It was granted May 6, 1879. William Gardner and Joseph Homma were appointed administrators of the estate of Rachel, deceased. They entered into a bond of six hundred dollars with Dixon Durant, Esu Durant, E. W. Gardner, approved securities, May 6, 1879.

Case No. 19- Andrew Freeny, petition for administrator on the estate of Robert Freeny, deceased, May 5, 1879. Petitioner recommended Forbes Leflore for administrator on the estate of Robert Freeny, was withdrawn and Clay Freeny and Simeon Turnbull were appointed administrators on said estate, July 8, 1879.

Case No. 20- William Gardner, petition for administrator on the estate of Widown Lawitubbee, deceased, May 5, 1879. Compromise having been made, the same was withdrawn.

Lest you think that early Caddo residents were only interested in their own local affairs I am posting some area news today.  Mr. Crossett often included state and national news in the paper and deemed these items worthy of his time and effort so I am sharing them with you. It may be that some of these people were well-known to local citizens, or he may have just found their circumstances newsworthy. I underlined the cities mentioned to make you more aware of each location.

News of Oklahoma and Indian Territory

Grant Richards, Chief of the Tonkawa Indians, has sold 160 acres of land for $4,400.

Harry Scolville, mail carrier on a hack line to Mountain Park, has disappeared.

John Kelley, of Cushing, a heavy drinker, ended his career by drinking two ounces of laudanum.

H. C. Beamer has contracted to care for the territorial deaf and dumb for $275 a year for each person.

At Mill Creek, near Ardmore, J. H. Dixon threw Nitric acid into his wife’s face, injuring her frightfully.

Rev. Henry Smith, living near El Reno, was struck by a runaway team and died from injuries received.

Ed Winn was shot and killed and Alex Winn fatally wounded near Mountainville, by Sam Dixon and Ed Smiley, miners who sought to prospect on a claim owned by the Winn’s. Dixon was captured, but Smiley escaped.

Bishop Meerschaert admitted forty young women to the order of Sister of Mercy at Krebs.

Marshall Bennett allowed 30 prisoners in jail at Muskogee to vote on the treaty ratification.

Miss Carrie McCandless, of Holton, Kansas, has been appointed assistant matron of the Chilocco Indian School.

Ed Kimball lost his life at Taloga. With another man he was fording the river with a roll of telephone wire when a five-foot wave struck them.

Henry Perry, aged 21, was shot and killed accidentally on Boggy Creek, thirty-five miles east of Mill Creek. Perry lived four miles south of Tulsa.

Frank Goodrich, of Owasso, and the horse he was riding were killed by lightening. Goodrich, with others, was leading about 30 horses along the road.

Charles B. Stuart, of South McAlester, has been appointed general attorney for the Indian Territory and special attorney for Arkansas and Oklahoma.

J. Y. Callahan and Jerry Simpson, with others, have formed a wholesale lumber company.

Head brakeman, W. L. Cornell, was seriously injured in a Frisco train wreck near Griggs.

Lieutenant Eli Admire has been visiting his father, Jake Admire, of Kingfisher.

George Houck, switchman for the Santa Fe at Purcell, fell under a train and had both legs and one arm cut off. He was placed on a passenger train to go to the Santa Fe Hospital at Topeka and died on the train.

The convention held at Okmulgee, to take steps for the annexation of the Creek Nation to Oklahoma, was attended by delegates from all parts of the Nation.

A.J. Hampton, a farmer, is to have a trial at South McAlester on the charge of raising a $1 bill to $10 and trying to pass it.

Saturday A Big Day In Caddo

If You Do Not Come You Will Miss Many Things of Value

Saturday will be a big day in Caddo. Thousands of visitors from over the county are expected and you ought to be one of them.

The biggest thing will be the Katy Special bearing lecturers and exhibits from the A. & M. College. The train will arrive at 4:10 p.m. and be placed on the siding near the Katy Mill and Elevator so it will be convenient to town. During the remainder of the afternoon the people may inspect the car and interview the college lecturers about any matters pertaining to farm work.

The night lecture will be given at the opera house where there will be comfortable seats, plenty of room, and fires if necessary. Caddo is providing this for the comfort of both the visitors and the farmers who come to be informed.

The lectures will relate to things of vital interest to the farmers; they will teach better methods and better handling of crops; they will give you the benefit of their wide knowledge gained by experience and experimentation.

 

I don’t know if we can expect thousands to attend, but here is an upcoming event:

 

The Caddo Community Association and the Caddo Masonic Lodge are joining together to have a fund raising event to support the Caddo and the Freeny Valley Volunteer Fire departments. They will host a stew and corn bread dinner and pie/cake auction Saturday, November 12 at the Caddo High cafeteria. Dinner will be served from 5pm to 7:30pm. Cost is $5 for stew, cornbread, and a drink. The auction will begin at 6pm. The Masonic Lodge has agreed to match funds up to $3,000.

All donations will be greatly appreciated. The fire departments have worked many long, hard hours during the drought and have incurred extra expenses. Please help us support them!

 

Cotton

I don’t know how many of you are old enough to remember cotton growing here on the prairie, but I often think of it. We drive along a pasture each day that was still a cotton field when I was a teenager. I remember my cousin chopping weeds in those long straight rows. There are still vestiges of the old gin standing in Kenefic. Some of my favorite Caddo pictures are of the tremendous cotton crops. Here is a count of bales for October, 1938.

I often use the local court records when I’m researching a family. You might think that your ancestor had to do something really “bad” in order to be listed in court proceedings, but divorces, wills, property disputes, custody arrangements, permits, taxes, and other legal proceedings were handled by local courts and might provide a name or date that you need to further your research.

Case No. 32. Choctaw Nation vs. Joe Billis was filed May 7, 1884 for the murder of Sealy Benton. The witnesses having examined and the court having no further jurisdiction, the case was transferred t the District Court for further investigation on June 3, 1884. G. W. Gardner, judge.

Case No. 33. William King vs. Decision of Case 29, May 10, 1884. Entered for an appeal to the Supreme Court of the Choctaw Nation. (Case 29 was Susanna Nelson vs. Lucy King. Restitution of property.)

Case No. 34. Choctaw Nation vs. Silum Halil, May 7, 1884 for violation of Pistol Law, was transferred to the Circuit Court, June 2, 1884. G. W. Gardner, judge.

Case No. 35. Levi Garland, Administrator of the estate of Littleton Sheco vs. King Perkins was filed, June 3, 1884.

Case No. 36. Myles Lewis vs. Bacy Patterson was filed June 3, 1884. Withdrawn by permission, July 7, 1884. Both parties agreeing to pay for the cost of the court.

Case No. 37. Frances Grubbs vs. William Stidman, Jesse Stidman, July 2, 1884, for threatening to take the life of the plaintiff.

Case No. 38. Mariah Johnson filed a petition July 1884 asking the court to direct the Administrator of the estate of George Grubbs, deceased, to turn over to her all property set forth in a deed of gift made to her by her father, George Grubbs, deceased. Granted, September 2, 1884. G. W. Gardner, judge.

Case No. 39. Molly Gardner vs. to stay the decision of Court, August 1884. Reviewed in favor of Susann Nelson vs. Lucy King at the special term of Court, July 1884.
