Blue Law Works Well, Caddo Closes Sunday

Last Sunday was the first day of the anti-Sunday closing ordinance and every store, restaurant and house in town was closed tight as a drum.  While the law does not prohibit butcher shops and drug stores from selling certain useful articles, those stores also closed so that no business could be done at all.  If a citizen had not provided himself with such things Saturday he simply did without.

Quite a bit of fun over the law and closing were indulged, some of the ones displaying crepe, as having been killed by the council, with directions either to Armstrong, Caney, Kenefick, or Durant. But it rained so hard that you couldn’t get anywhere.

The Herald thinks the law will prove a good thing. People too long have violated the very spirit of the Sabbath day. It was made for man’s rest and the merchant and druggist needs the same as anyone else. Beside it looks more respectful to the God who has commanded that the Sabbath be kept holy and free from labor.

The town law could not affect Sunday baseball except inside the corporate limits- the grounds happen to be out of these limits- but we understand an effort will be made to get the county attorney to take the hand and prevent these sports.

At The Royal

Painters and decorators are at (work) on the Royal Theatre this week, there being no performance until Saturday night.

Next Tuesday night The Royal will show one of the best pictures of its history. It is Edward Everett Hale’s story of “The Man Without a Country”. A story of vivid early history of America. It is the story of a man who never wanted to hear of America again and his wish was gratified. See the picture.

Friday and Saturday, May 23 and 24, The Royal will show one of the really great pictures of the year: “The Heart of Humanity”. A story of gripping interest, fervent patriotism and glorious achievement. No picture has greater achievement than this. Eight reels of thrill and movement. Make your engagements to suit.

Mrs. Brown Entertains

Last Friday evening Mrs. Ed F. Brown entertained members of the Twin Six K. K. K. of Durant, at her home just south of town, with a box luncheon.

The guests were met at the depot by Mrs. Hazel Smiser, Misses Jennie Manning and (Edith) Moore, and Messrs. Sam Maytubby and Rex Whitt. They were taken in cars for a pleasant drive and to the Manning home where they entertained until 8 o’clock, then going to Mrs. Brown’s home with escorts. This home was beautifully decorated for the occasion with roses.

Cards were passed containing the names of each guest; a penalty to use either Miss or Mister was to wear a tall yellow cap. Boxes, tied with blue ribbons, were passed and on opening were found to contain a delicate and most appetizing luncheon. The hostess also served iced tea, angel food cake and strawberries with whipped cream.

Miss Elizabeth McKinney sang “Alice Blue Gown”, Miss Ola Human rendered a violin solo, Mr. Carroll Franks sang several selections,  Miss Emise Folsom being accompanist for all. Several contests were held which afforded laughter and fun.

After declaring the best time of the season, the Twin Six K. K. K.’s departed for Durant on the 1:20am train.

Assisting Mrs. Brown to entertain were Mrs. Hazel Smiser, Misses Moore and Manning.

Those accepting Mrs. Brown’s hospitality were: Misses Bernadine Aubrey, Fay Scoot, Blanche Thomas, Ola Human, Elizabeth Evans, Emise Folsom, Messrs. Milton Pate, and G. B. Dunlap, Durant, Okla.; Misses Edith Moore, Jennie Manning, Mrs. Hazel Smiser, Messrs. Carroll Franks, Sam Maytubby, Audra Hipp, Rex Whitt, Fred Early, Kirby Glasscock, and C. Miss French of Fort Worth has been the guest of the R. A. Riddels family during the holidays.

Joe Cook has returned from a visit to Rosebud, Texas where he was called on account of the serious illness of his father.

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Wise returned to their home in Commerce, Texas Monday after a visit to Mrs. Wise’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Rogers.

I wish to thanks my friends for their efforts on my behalf, by which I was enabled to get the piano at the Variety Store. Ova Trout

Berry Norman was here Saturday shaking hands with old friends. He is one of the stockholders in the new gusher brought in at Ardmore last week.

Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Pitchlynn have moved to town from their farm near Kenefick. They are occupying the Chile’s residence recently vacated by Tom B. Reed.

Mrs. Walter Lindsey died at their home Wednesday and was buried yesterday in Caddo Cemetery. They live on the W. T. Smith farm and her death came suddenly. (Mrs. Lindsey is not listed on the current cemetery records, which means she no longer has a headstone.)

Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Tanner received from the stork a most splendid Christmas gift in the arrival of a fine girl at their home. The little miss has been named Bessie Mozell.

Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Chiles moved this week into their new home near the new school building. This is probably the most modern home in town; is very pretty and comfortable.

Bud Manning has purchased the Chiles bungalow on Choctaw Avenue and has moved into it. Mr. and Mrs. Eggner have moved into the home just vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Chiles.

D. W. Petty of Hugo spent several days visiting his daughter, Mrs. A. T. Drake. He left this week for Trenton, Texas to visit relatives. He was accompanied by Miss Winona Drake.

Noah Arrington was in town last Saturday. He says the rains have even softened the sandy roads until they are mighty bad and it takes a whole lot of water to make sandy roads muddy.

 Dr. C. L. Brown, Veterinary Surgeon, will be in Caddo each Saturday at C. L. Lievsay’s Barn and will be glad to do your practice. Consultation free.

The regular meeting of the Music Club for next Saturday with Mrs. Maytubby has been postponed until Saturday Jan. 10 on account of sickness of the hostess and other members of the club.

Mr. and Mrs. H. Eichenberger arrived Sunday from Konawa and will go to housekeeping in the Bob Pace residence on buffalo street as soon as their goods arrive. Mr. Eichenberger has been here some time and went to Konawa to spend the holidays and to pack his goods for shipment.

Huffman & Brewer is the style of a new firm, being a consolidation of the stocks and resources of H. G. Huffman and Lake Brewer. They have the double building now owned by H. G. Huffman and when they get straightened out they will have one of the prettiest as well as best stocked stores in Caddo.

Sometime ago P. L. Rogers suffered an accident which incapacitated him for work for three weeks. He held a policy in the Woodmen Accident Insurance Association and just as soon as proofs were submitted to the company the claim was paid. Mr. Rogers is in every way satisfied with his treatment by the company.

W. F. Dodd attended the meeting of the directors of the Oklahoma and Gulf Highway Association at Ardmore Friday. He was there to present the proposition of Caddo and Kenefick and was delighted with his reception and final result of his efforts. Mr. Dodd is a pusher all right and if we follow his lead we will all be riding over good roads pretty soon.

A meeting of the members of the fire department will be held at the fire station Saturday night. Every member is requested to be present and others interested in the work are invited to be on hand. New officers will be elected and other business will be attended to. Wm. Malone and John Schwartz each have presented the fire boys with $10 as an appreciation of their good work. The boys need this and more money to buy suitable clothing.

The Woman’s’ Club Wednesday night gave their New Year’s reception and entertainment at the pretty home of Mr. and Mrs.  J. C. Hogan. There were a large number present, both members and invited guests. There was no lack of interest throughout the evening. “Bean Bag” made people careful in conversation, while “Turning Over a New Leaf” was extremely interesting. The spelling contest was novel as well as exciting. Guessing at names proved difficult and the refreshments were all that the name implied, being both delicious and refreshing. As a climax the guests saw the old year go out, and the New Year, 1914, pretty and bright, come in. …(can’t read last two sentences)

J. E. Derr returned this week from a visit to Texas points. He reports that every place he visited was in a worse shape than Caddo.

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Frazer enjoyed a turkey dinner with Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Brigance at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mattox, Christmas day.

Mrs. Farmer, mother of Mrs. Joe Cannon, died at the family residence in Caddo Wednesday night, and was buried in Caddo Cemetery yesterday.

H. Edwards is now an officer of the Security National Bank. He has sold his merchandise business and returned to his original avocation. He invites his friends to call on him there, assuring them a cordial welcome.

 

Note: I will continue with these tomorrow. The locals for January are often quite lengthy, and this issue is no exception. However, I do want to skip ahead to an item related to the one previously underlined. I’m not sure why they were not printed together (they are in different columns), or why more comment was not made about either. I didn’t notice them at the time I copied the locals, so I need to go back to the paper and look to see if there are individual obituaries for the women in the next issue. This must have been a very sad holiday for this family.

Mrs. Joe Cannon died the morning of Christmas Eve. The funeral occurred Christmas day from the family residence. She was the wife of Joe Cannon, the daughter of Mrs. Farmer. She had been living in and near Caddo many years.

Pioneer Goes to Reward

At the home of Tom O’Dea’s Saturday morning, April 9^th, Grandma Robinson died after many weeks of illness. The remains were buried Sunday afternoon in the family graveyard, near the old home place six miles southeast of Caddo. Rev. E. Hotchkin of Durant conducted the funeral.

Grandma Robinson was the mother of C. C. Robinson and Mrs. M. A. Braudrick and had many other relatives in the community. She was the wife of Rev. Calvin Robinson, who was a Presbyterian missionary to this country and who died about twenty years ago. She would have been 82 years of age had she lived until May. She was born near Poteau and was one of the early pioneers to this part of the country. Her first husband was named Trice, after whose death she married Rev. Robinson.

Grandma Robinson was a rugged Christian character. She was a friend to those in need. She had an abiding faith in her Lord and she was beloved by the whole community. The last few years she made her home with Tom O’Dea and rarely left the place.

The funeral was largely attended by friends and neighbor; many from town went to pay their respects.

The floral offerings were very beautiful and attested somewhat of the esteem in which she was held.

Christmas Party

John L. Boland entertained the members of the Lions Club Tuesday evening. The hours passed swiftly with music and games. Delicious refreshments were served to the sixteen guests present.
