Turner B. Turnbull Relatives Meet

At the home of Mrs. Turner B. Turnbull, 10 miles east of Caddo on Friday and Saturday, August 5^th and 6^th, there was held a reunion of the Turnbull family and an organization of the descendents of Dr. Turner B. Turnbull was perfected.

The following officers were elected: President, Walter J. Turnbull of Durant, Okla.; Vice-President, Mrs. R. O. Sumter of Ada, Okla.; Secretary, Miss Mary Adeline Boland of Caddo, Okla.; Directors, J. M. Flinchum, Calvin, Okla., R. O. Sumter, Ada, Okla., Mrs. Lon Reid, San Angelo, Texas, Mrs.. A. D. Turnbull, Caddo, Okla. and Sam Tigert, Sr. Matoy, Okla.

It was voted to have the next reunion at the Turnbull home place east of Caddo on the first Saturday and Sunday in August, 1933.

Dr. Turner B. Turnbull was one of the first of the Choctaw people to study medicine and after his graduation he began the practice of his profession in what was the Choctaw Nation at Mt. Pleasant, east of Caddo in 1841 and he continued to practice until his death in 1877. He was buried in the Turnbull family cemetery near the home place east of Caddo.

He had four sons, Daniel, Leroy, Simean, and Turner B. Jr. and three daughters, Julia Flinchum, Mary Benton, and Angie Mathis and his descendents number in the hundreds.

Among those attending the reunion were: Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Sumter and Miss Cleo Sumter, Ada, Okla.; Cecil Benton, Lorenza, Texas; Mrs. Chas. Turnbull and her children, Charles, Mary Lee and Jack, Norman, Okla. ; Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Flinchum and son, J. M. Jr. of Calvin, Okla.; Sam Tigert and son, Sam Jr. and family of Timothy, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Lawton and children; John L. Boland and children, Margarette, Zuleika, Mary Adeline, and Jack.

Assisting Mrs. A. D. Turnbull in caring for the visitors were Walter J. Turnbull, Mrs. Ruth Turnbull, and Mrs. E. Park.

Good Citizens

Mr. Crossett, The Caddo Herald’s editor, was fond of gently chastising the citizens of Caddo about their responsibilities as residents of a small town. His paper is filled with lengthy editorials about making improvements, shopping at home, building roads, and just being good neighbors. He also frequently put little “fillers” in between news items. One minute you were casually reading about Mr. Jones’s trip to Durant, and the next moment Mr. Crossett was telling you how to spend your money wisely. He was a crafty man!

Every community has within itself the elements that make for its success if they are properly exploited and the benefits allowed to accrue toward upbuilding and enrichment of the community. If all the money earned in town and country were re-invested in the community there would be plenty to finance every project of a local nature. The practice of sending money out of town to enrich big cities and develop industry at another place, oil fields and the like, is what’s the matter with a lot of good towns that once were. This sending money away has killed small towns and built up big cities and nobody really has benefited.

Same issue, in another place:

Of course you are proud of your home town and say many nice things about her to strangers, which is proper and no more than could be expected of you. But did you ever stop to think whether or not the town should be proud of you? What nice things can be said about you and your relation to your town? What part do you have in making your town one to be proud of? Everyone can and should have a part in making his town a better town and one that all can be proud to call their home.

W. J. Moon was advertising a general line of high-quality merchandise at a low price.

Hobart had suffered a disastrous fire which had destroyed the entire eastern half of the town.

Pope Leo XIII had died at the Vatican in Rome. He was buried among pompous ceremonies of the Catholic Church.

The Choctaw Telephone Company held the telephone franchise in Caddo. They were advertising telephones at $2 per month for business use and $1.50 per month for the residential phones.

Mesdames J. M. Goddard, A. C. Joyce, C. E. McPherren, W. W. Boone, J. V. Hardin, J. L. Rappolee, W. F. Dodd, C. A. Hancock, Barlow Rogers and H. W. Diffenderffer ,and Misses Pearl Kick, Jennie Diffenderffer, Robbye Travis, Helen Gragg, Soulie Pate, Ella Smith, and Annie Smith, and Messrs. J. M. Goddard, C. E. McPherren, Will Maxwell, and Clarence Wheeler formed a party of “bathers” who had enjoyed a cooling swim in Blue.

N. G. Womack had started to work as a prescription clerk for W. P. Wood.

Liberty Ladies have a Community Club

Rufe Bolts Wisecracks

The ladies Community Club of Liberty met in regular session Dec. 1, 1938 at the home of Mrs. Della Springer. Opening with singing; devotional by Mrs. Addie Flowers; a play by Mesdames Dollie B. Berry, Della Springer, and Beatrice Hartman; music by Mrs. Hartman.

Mrs. Addie Flowers made a talk on Christmas that was enjoyed by all present; attendance was good; 5 new members were added: Mrs. Nunn, Mrs. Head, Mrs. Booker, Mrs. Crites, and Mrs. Hartman. Delicious refreshments were served by hostess then an exchange of Christmas gifts in which all participated. Meeting was much enjoyed and voted a success by unanimous approval.

This club work is doing lots of good by bringing the women of the community closer together, besides teaching housewives many new and helpful things that might otherwise be overlooked for the door is open to all women who wish to join.

Lafe Scroggins says that W. P. A. workers should be furnished with a caddy to carry their shovels for ‘em. It is too hard on them to have to carry their shovels from place to place just to lean on. Rufe Bolts

Rev. Mack Powell of Druant will preach at 11am Sunday and the Epworth League will have charge of evening worship service.

We urge our members to be regular in attendance at Sunday School and work for new pupils, our church objective this year.

John Hudson, 1939

John Hudson was Killed

Instantly Saturday Afternoon

John Hudson was killed instantly while walking with the traffic on highway 69 between Armstrong and the Y south of Caddo when struck by an auto driven by Art Small as he got to the top of the hill. Small’s view of the man was blocked by the hill and an auto just ahead of him. Small was absolved of blame in the matter.

Hudson would have been 65 years of age this summer. He had worked at various places in and near Caddo, but had not relatives here.

Hudson’s body was hit by the bumper and radiator and was badly mangled, was knocked 50 feet away and Small’s car ran into the ditch. Two young women were riding with Small at the time, but were not hurt.  Small is a student at STC.

The funeral was held at the Caddo Cemetery Chapel conducted by Rev. M. D. Gentry at 3 pm.  Monday.

Army to Keep Tinker Field Going After Fire

The army air force plans, says a Washington dispatch, to continue activities at Tinker Field near Oklahoma City despite the fire Monday which destroyed the main hanger and caused damage to the building estimated by the army at $749,000.00.

Ten people were killed by fire and explosions, 33 injured. Air force officers said that the field had been placed on the interim list of army air fields and it would remain active for the time being. The fire has not in any way changed those plans.

Miss Nail Gets on Dean Honor Roll at S. S. C.

Miss Carolyn Nail, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. O. Nail of Caddo, a freshman at Southeastern, is one of the 31 freshmen students who were named to the dean’s honor roll for the first semester. To be eligible for this roll the student must make no grade of less than B in any course and must be carrying 10 hours.

Oliver James Pearson, s1c, of route 2, Caddo, received an honorable discharge from Norman separation center lately. He had served 15 months overseas in the Pacific theatre.

Bryan County Basketball tournament will be played in Durant at Southeastern court this weekend beginning Thursday night. Caddo boys will play Achille Thursday night at 9 o’clock. This tournament promises a number of very good games.

 

 

Shannon Cochran

Shower, Reception Given for Miss Shannon Cochran 

Miss Shannon Cochran, who is soon to become the bride of Chas. (Snooks) Bilbo, was given a shower and reception at the home of Mrs. Joe Brown Tuesday evening. Mrs. Brown was assisted by Mrs. M. G. Downing, Mrs. Warner Adair, Mrs. Ernest Pitchlynn, Mrs. Homer Freeny, Mrs. Irene Dodd and Mrs. J. H. McCulman.  

Guests were received at the door by Mrs. Brown, who presented them Mrs. Cochran, mother of the bride-to-be.  Mrs. Bilbo, Mrs. Kick, and Miss Ruth Cochran pressed over the guest book. Mrs. Homer Freeny and Mrs. Myron Stone served at the refreshment table.

Miss Cochran left Wednesday morning by plane from Dallas for Los Angles where she will be married upon her arrival to Mr. Bilbo, who is with the U. S. Navy.

The Brown home was beautifully decorated with fresh flowers. A large number of guests called during the evening, vouching for the newly-weds-to-be much happiness.

Miss Shannon is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Roy L. Cochran, is a graduate of Caddo high school and Southeastern and attended Oklahoma University two terms.

Night watchman

November 8

T. A. Alexander has interviewed some of our business men as to whether or not they would pay for a night watchman for the town and has met with some encouragement. A great deal of thieving and fires might be prevented if we had such protection.

November 22

T. A. Alexander began last week as night watchman for the town. This week he is acting as City Marshal in the absence of J. T. Jackson.

December 6

Last Friday night about 1 o’clock while night watchman Alexander was on his rounds he discovered smoke issuing from the meat market of Houstand Heath, for which he immediately gave the alarm and set to work to extinguish the flames. Pretty soon a small crowd had gathered and the fire put out with little damage to the building. The fire was caused, Mr. Alexander thinks, by a cigar stub or match carelessly thrown on the inside of the building; that it was impossible to have been of an incendiary origin.
