Locals, 1917

Sometimes it makes me a little sad to read these and know what comes next. Here in June Dudley Maytubby is driving in the summer sun enjoying his new car. He had just taken the Naval exam in May and looked forward to serving his country. In August, while on a picnic with friends at the Blue River, he drowned while helping to save a young woman. He was posthumously awarded a bronze medal by the Carnegie Hero Foundation.

Miss Mabel Trussell is spending the week with friends in town.

Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Smith spend Sunday in town with relatives.

Mrs. T. J. Craghead heard the Hawaiians in Durant Tuesday.

James Shofner attended the Chautauqua in Durant Sunday night.

Dewey Goodman has gone to the Markham Mill for a month stay.

Mrs. Carl Beaty from Durant was in Caddo Tuesday to visit homefolks.

Mr. Wm. Malone and family drove to Coalgate Sunday in their new car.

Mrs. J. R. Smith was up from Durant Friday to visit with homefolks.

Miss Hattie Price returned Sunday to her home in Boswell, Oklahoma.

Mesdames J. K. Bass and H. T. Styron spent Tuesday in Sherman.

Clarence McCoy and Bud Manning were Durant visitors Sunday evening.

Preston Malone and Luther Rowsey spend Sunday in Durant with friends.

Miss Fayna Hulsey spent the weekend in Caddo with friends and relatives.

We are now paying $4.00 per ton for Bois d’arc wood. It’s a good time to work those rough trees up. The Lingo-Leeper Co.

Mrs. Ed. F. Brown and Miss Louise Payne were visitors to Durant Wednesday.

Miss Helen Styron is spending the weekend in Durant with Miss Neleina Turner.

Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Bass and Amos K. Bass visited Ardmore the first of the week.

Jasper Freeny arrived Sunday from near Muskogee to visit his family for a few days.

H. Eichenberger has returned from a two week’s business visit to Konawa and Shawnee.  

Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Jamsion attended the Chautauqua in Durant Sunday and Sunday night.

Mrs. J. E. Mattox has returned to her home in McAlester after a week’s visit with friends.

Mrs. Jas. Gross and Mrs. Tom Gross enjoyed the Chautauqua at Durant Tuesday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Shofner form Durant visited homefolks in Caddo Saturday and Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Tony Goodman are here this week from Woodward Okla. visiting homefolks.

Geo. Hatcher has returned to Caddo from Oklahoma City to spend a few weeks visiting friends.

Ira Smiser was in Caddo Sunday from Haskell, Oklahoma at which place he has a position in a bank.

Mrs. L. L. Robison, Miss Carrie Robison, and Mr. and Mrs. June Robison were in Roberta Tuesday.

Jas. Herndon and family from Greenville, Texas were here this week visiting the family of John Droke.

Mrs. M. F. Haralson has returned from a ten days visit with relatives at Whitewright and Denison.

H. F. Bass and wife, A. K. Bass and sons, drove to Wichita Falls, Texas Sunday in the former’s car.

Herman Hauer and Ike McCoy, Miss Nina and Alma Hauer and Mabel Trussell were in Durant Sunday.

Most of the storm damage in town has been repaired. There is yet a big lot to do in the country though.  

Mrs. Nellie Hill and daughter, Margaret, is visiting the family of Mrs. Henry Gill in Denison this week.

June Corn, Silver Mine and Gold Mine seed corn, kaffir corn, fetereta and milo, maize seed at Huffman’s.

Mrs. W. C. Jamison, Miss Eleanor Carroll, and Miss Edith Moore attended the Chautauqua in Durant Tuesday.

Mrs. J. C. Davison, Mrs. G. E. Carroll and Mrs. G. A. Crossett attended the Chautauqua at Durant Wednesday.

Mrs. Lawson England was up from Durant two days this week visiting her parent, Mr. and Mr. B. F. Pinson.

Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Styron and daughter, Mary Lee have returned from a visit with Mr. Styron’s parent in Claburne, Texas.

Mrs. J. E. Bass, Miss Phyllis Hancock, Miss Antoinette Peters and Mrs. Bill Easter attended the Chautauqua in Durant Tuesday.

Mrs. C. E. Blessing and Little Miss Janice Crossett and Loraine Brigance attended the Chautauqua at Durant Tuesday afternoon.

The Baptist ladies will entertain Friday, June 22 from 2:30-9:00 o’clock at Sargent’s office. Music, refreshments, and art exhibits free. All are invited.

Preaching will be held at the Presbyterian Church next Sunday by the Rev. W. T. Spearman of Cordell, Oklahoma. All are invited to come out and hear him.

A new roof has been competed on the High School building, made necessary by the storm damage. The windows will be repaired as soon as the glass comes.

Rev. S. J. McMurry  from Sulphur, was here Tuesday attending to business and greeting friends. Rev. McMurry was once pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Caddo.
