Boost the Schools

Did you ever think about it- your child is apt to take about the same interest in his school studies as the parent does.  Do you encourage your child to be obedient and studious at school? If you don’t the fault of his failure to progress is not with the school, but with yourself. Ninety per cent of the cause for criticism of the schools can be corrected in the home. The parent or patron who insists on regular attendance, prompt and unquestioned obedience, application, and who takes an interest in the work his child is doing, is the parent who has no fault to find with the teachers. Make the child think that he has the best teacher in the world. If you will do that you will find that the boosting which at first may have been insincere will at last become sincere. When you create doubt in the mind of a child you might as well take him out of school. Try boosting your school and watch results.

1913 continued

Hard to believe that Caddo once had a skating rink, a race track, a large park, a hotel and an opera house! Edward Baxter Perry, brought here by the Music Club, was a famous blind musician of the early 1900’s. You can read about him in old issues of the New York Times and other publications.

The Christian Church was meeting in the Odd Fellows Hall because their new building was not completed until July.

John McClasky from out on Route 1 was to town yesterday and ordered The Herald sent to his address.

R. A. Riddels attended the Cattlemen’s Convention and Live Stock Show in Forth Worth this week. He has not missed such a meeting in thirty-five years.

P. H. Boxley came home Sunday from Boswell where he is conducting a sale for K. J. Swearingen. Mr. Boxley is very successful in the sale business having more calls than he can attend to.

The Woman’s Missionary Society will hold a bonnet and apron bazaar Friday, March 14^th at the Variety Store. They will have on sale bonnets and aprons and solicit the patronage of all the people.

W. H. Glasscock has moved his skating rink to Durant where his son Walter will be in charge. On March 1^st the umbrella was awarded to Miss Thelma Harris, she receiving the most votes. (Yes, this is the way it was typed in the paper and I have no idea what this means or if it was really supposed to be another item, not included with the skating rink.)

Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Carraway and daughter, Minnie Alice left today for Houston, Texas to attend the birthday celebration of his mother, that being the occasion of a general reunion of the family.

M. F. Haralson is adding a new room to his home on west Buffalo. The roof will be remodeled and when the work is done the house will present a very attractive appearance and comfortable arrangement.

Rev. A. S. Eggner of Madill arrived Tuesday with his family and has taken up his work here as pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Bro. Eggner is a pleasant gentleman and we cordially welcome him and his family to Caddo.

The Woman’s Missionary Society met with Mrs. M. A. Linch and Mrs. T. M. Hargraves Tuesday afternoon at the home of the latter. There was a large attendance and much interest in the meeting. The hostesses served enjoyable refreshments.

Bro. Young will preach for the Christian congregation at the Odd Fellows Hall Sunday morning and evening. The change to the opera house was not made and services will continue to be held in the lodge room. They extend a cordial invitation to be present.

Scott Powell recently completed a deal whereby he becomes the owner from A. P. Braudrick of the two lots just south of Mr. Braudrick’s home place. He is now preparing to build a home which is to be completed during the summer. Mr. Powell has been appointed cotton weigher by Ben Lee and will do the weighing this fall in town. He will retain his farming interests.

Perry Piano Recital

At the opera house Monday night, under the auspices of the Music Club, Mr. Edward Baxter Perry will give a piano recital. Mr. Perry is a musician of national reputation whose recitals are always in demand, in fact it required a year’s time for the club to secure him for this engagement. He has pleased music loving audiences all over the world, has few equals with the piano. Remember he is at the opera house next Monday night.

Clerk’s Salary Reduced

At their regular meeting this week the county commissioners reduced the salary of the county court clerk at Caddo from $50 to $25 per month, but not requiring constant attendance at the office. J. M. Moore, the clerk, does not have to stay in the office except when someone wishes to file papers or secure a marriage license and when court is in session. His place of business being close by he is readily reached by any who desire his services.

We believe there are other clerks whose salaries might either be reduced or eliminated without serious detriment to the well running of the county’s business.

It pays to boost Caddo. 

 

 

 

1913

The post office building and D. McCoy are mentioned several times in today’s post. I have not been able to determine what happened to the huge building that once occupied Main and Buffalo. It is still visible in photos taken in 1938. If anyone has any memory of when it was torn down or why, I would appreciate a clue so I can look for it in the papers.

Miss Crews, who has held a position for some time with H. G.  Huffman, returned to her home at Wapanucka last Sunday.

The Bass Company held their Millinery opening last night, (Thursday), a full account of which will appear in next week’s issue.

C. W. Carter, of Carter & Booker, went to Bennington yesterday where he has several contracts for the metal work on new buildings being erected.

Cars and Roads, 1923

 

We are so accustomed to our cars being an essential part of our lives that we forget that the automobile was once the “newest thing”. Even in the twenties it was something that not everyone could afford and many people thought was a passing fancy. But you can follow the ads and articles in the paper and see it becoming more and more important to daily life. And as people acquired more autos there was a dire need for more roads.

New Filling Station 

The Highway Service Station, owned by Freeman Beaty, is now complete, and will be opened to the public Saturday morning. It announces that for this day only, a gallon of gasoline will be given free with each five gallons sold that day.

Mr. Beaty is desirous of having you test his service. That is what he has to sell and he hopes for a large patronage on opening day. Mr. Beaty is a Caddo raised boy and everybody knows him. He has filled in the street to the curb so that access to his pump is easy.

Kirby Glascock Now with Caddo Motor Co.

Kirby Glasscock, whom everyone knows, who was raised here, and who numbers his friends by all who know him, arrived home Wednesday from South Texas and yesterday morning went to work with the Caddo Motor Co., as a salesman for the Lincoln, Ford and Fordson.

Kirby knows one thing well- that is automobiles. He was almost raised in a car, and can tell them as far as he can hear them.

He wants to let you know that he is selling the Ford products now because they are the most useable machines for this country. He sees a big prospect in tractors and trucks, for the highways make truck hauling profitable and the farmers need tractors so that they can save big feed bills and do more work for less money.

If interested he wants you to call the company and he will come to see you. No trouble to show Fords.

 

Jefferson Highway

The importance of the Jefferson Highway every day is demonstrated. It is traveled when other roads are muddy and impassable. We understand that the contract is soon to be let for the east and west road which is of really more importance to us than the Jefferson. It will connect Kenefick with Caddo to Sugar Loaf. They can’t build it any too soon to suit us.
