The Premiums

 Last week Caddo pulled off her big annual Corn Carnival and W. O. W. Picnic. This show always attracts people from far and near because they are sure that they will see something worthwhile and because there are always provided several real good free attractions.

On the last day of the Carnival Hon. Joseph W. McNeal, republican nominee for governor of the sate was here and made a splendid speech which was listened to attentively by the immense crowd that had gathered to hear him. He is big, broad minded, capable, and is perhaps the strongest man the republicans could put out.

The premium lists were not made up last week in time for us to publish them, and for the benefit of those who would like to know we have decided to publish a list of the winners this week. The list follows:

Best upland corn, white, J. R. Rodocker, $10; M. F. Clower, $5. The sweepstakes for the best general selection of corn went to Mr. Rodocker, the prize was $10 cash.

Animals

These two items seemed to be at odds with each other. On the one hand, Caddo provided for the watering of stock in town by placing watering troughs at two convenient locations. But the marshal makes it clear that you’d better not wander off and leave the stock unattended. There are numerous other items in the paper through the years that refer to regulations about stock. At one time cattle herds were driven through town, much to the dismay of the local women.

Permanent Water Troughs

The permanent water troughs have been installed by the city at each end of the business section of Buffalo Street; they are now being used by the public for watering stock. A goose-neck has been put in by the city on the corner opposite The Herald office for the purpose of loading wagon tanks and barrels of those who have to haul water. The city will make a charge of 10 to 20 cents per load of water which charge will just about reimburse the city for the cost of having the water pumped from Blue. The convenience in the manner of loading is worth the price charged for the water over the old way of loading by the bucket fulls.

Marshal’s Notice

Notice is hereby given that the practice of larreting stock on sidewalks, streets, and alleys is in violation of ordinance No. 5, which authorizes Marshal to impound such stock and also provides for a fine of from $1 to $25 for each offense. After this notice all stock found larreted on sidewalks, streets, or alleys will be taken up and impounded. A.P. Braudrick, Marshal

Miss Mead Pirtle and Miss Nicie Pirtle from Honey Grove arrived Tuesday to attend the picnic and visit Miss Ross Braudrick.

W. M. Smith went to Sanger, Texas Saturday, returning Sunday accompanied by his wife and son who will spend the week in Caddo.

Mrs. John Hampton, from Albany, spent a part of last week in Caddo, the guest of her sister, Mrs. J. H. Franks and Mrs. H. I. Meadows.

Fifty ladies of Caddo will recommend Spirella Corsets, not found in stores. They are made to your measure. Mrs. B. E. Homer, Corsetiere.

Carnival visitors have a chance to see some real good baseball games this week. Caddo and Leonard both have good teams and they are playing like leaguers.

Mrs. M. E. Gregg is one of the faculty of the Haskell State School of Agriculture at Broken Arrow. Mrs. Gregg formerly was teacher of the primary grade in the Caddo school.

The flies have been terrible the past two weeks, caused we believe by so many oat stacks. The Herald believes this nuisance can be abated by burning the straw stacks and disinfecting the barns and outhouses.  

John T. Petty was here Saturday. He is taking some pride in the Caddo Corn Carnival for he realizes it is the biggest thing of its kind in this part of the state. He realizes it as much for Kenefick as for Caddo.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Christmas 1947

I realize that the sheer size of current congregations would preclude this event from happening today, but it still warms my heart to think of several congregations and the school coming together to create a Christmas cantata.

Choral Groups Present a Christmas Cantata

Sunday evening at the Methodist church singers from all the churches in Caddo presented the Christmas Cantata under the direction of Mrs. Erma Lee Taylor, with Mrs. H. F. Bass at the piano.

Selections included traditional Christmas carols. Thirty voices gave splendid harmony. Mrs. Glenn Cunningham read the Holy Scripture story of the Nativity.

The church was illuminated, 60 candles along the aisles, with tall candelabra across the alter. A large Cedar Christmas tree with varicolored lights filled a corner. Centered on the back of the pulpit was a large painting of the Nativity by Mrs. Nina Faye Hardy. Several pastel drawings by the high school art students were placed at appropriate places in the auditorium, completing the seasonal decorations.

Misses Oretha Sargent and Holland Boydstun dressed as angels, led the processional, and recessional, and lighted the candles.

Members of the choir were Mrs. Roy Barber, Mrs. Minnie Braudrick, Mrs. Vernon Cargill, Misses Lanecia Faye Dickey, Joan Hallmark, Ida Sue McGrew, Joyce and Betty Robinson, Barbara Sargent, Pauline Adair, Martha Sue Fox, and Mrs. Jim Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Young, Mrs. J. D. Maytubby, Mrs. J. B. Kirk, Mrs. Grady Sargent, Paul Edmonds, Mrs. Pat Hardy, Miss Nina Floyd Joines, T. J. Witherspoon, Miss Robbie Sargent, Glenn Cunningham, Jim Gross, Russell Fox, Rev. Thomas J. Edmonds.

Mrs. Augusta Richardson was costume designer; Mrs. Pat Hardy supervised decorations, and arrangements, and Caddo High School glee club robes were used.

Upon dismissal Mrs. H. F. Bass entertained all the choral group, their husbands and wives, and the participating pastors, at a party at her home, which was decorated with traditional Christmas.

 

 

 

Jannie Jones

Mrs. Jannie Jones

Died Saturday Nov. 19^th 1910 at 3:15 o’clock- age about 40 years. Her husband, Mr. R. Jones died six months and 13 days before she was called to go.

Mrs. Jones confessed faith in Christ when sixteen years old, she joined the Baptist church and has lived a Christian life ever since.  She was a member of the Chapel church when she died and was buried Sunday afternoon in the home cemetery.

Smooth the locks of silver hair,

On our mother’s brow with tender care

Lay on her bosom pure as snow,

The fairest and sweetest flowers that grow;

Kiss her and leave her our hearts’ delight,

Her pain is over, she sleeps tonight.  

She died at 3:15 pm just as the day was drawing to a close. She went to sleep like a tired child. Surely it was the most fitting time for a pure spirit to take its flight heavenward. With the eye of faith, and one could see at the closing of this November day an invisible hand wave a signal and she could hear a voice in softest tones from the one gone on before, calling her on to the other shore, telling her God’s angels were waiting to escort her through the gate.

After   a long and useful life she died as she lived: honored, trusted and loved by all who knew her best. The children will miss her at home, we will all miss her; there will be a vacant place at home, at church and abroad. My deepest sympathy goes out to the two daughters- Mrs. Lizzie Lytle, and Miss Nannie Jones- who are left without a mother’s care.

May God’s care and protecting hand be with them through life and at last may they all meet again where parting is no more and where there is no sad farewell again to say.

 A new post office has been established at the Dolph Riddle’s place called Banty. There is a gin and mill there and quite a number of people will get their mail there.

Mike O’Dea is able to be out again. Last fall he had his right hand severely injured by a runaway team, and it became so painful that amputation was necessary, which was done about a month ago.

Misses Delphin Mugler, Ella Freeny, Una Freeny, Daisy Baxter, and Mary O’Dea have returned home from school at Purcell.

Mr. Hickman is well known in Caddo as a most excellent young man and the bride of his choice was a most charming young lady, the daughter of Mr. J. Beck, one of the substantial farmers living east of Caddo.

Cpl. R. B. Haddock has completed course of training for Flexible ---ner, and has been awarded a certificate from the Las Vegas army air field. He has been there from Aug. 14 to Sept.

War Efforts

I guess the reader can draw a couple of conclusions from this article: 1. The grocers must have had “on demand” or at least very frequent grocery deliveries before this. 2. The grocers were conscious of their civic duty and willing to do their part to support the war efforts. My grandmother talked often of the sacrifices ordinary citizens made so that supplies could be sent to the troops.

Caddo Grocers are Making but Two Deliveries a Day

Conforming to war needs, the grocers of Caddo will make but two deliveries of groceries per day, beginning Monday Jan. 19. Customers are respectfully requested to anticipate your grocery needs so as to conform to this agreement. You will also aid in the war effort if you will carry home as much as possible to save rubber and gasoline for war necessities.

To The Public:

All orders of groceries made before 10 o’clock each morning will be delivered before noon.

All orders received from then until 4pm will be delivered before night.

Orders received after 4pm will be delivered next morning.

This ruling begins on Monday, January 19 and will be strictly adhered to and no exceptions can be made. Please help us to help the war effort by not asking us to deviate.

We respectfully suggest that you can further help the cause by ordering larger quantities each time, so that fewer visits will be necessary.
