I love this! Just think of “self-service" being so new that it had to be explained and demonstrated. Although I think the number of visitors might be a bit inflated, it was probably a great attraction for a few months.

A New Store with a New Service Idea
W. H. Stevens opened his new Self-Serve Grocery last Saturday. The event was widely advertised and many inducements were offered to the people, so that a large number came. A check was kept on the visitors and during the first day 1730 people visited the new store.
This store is arranged so that customers may help themselves. Every item is price-marked and the customer goes about the store, selects what he wants, and pays for it just as he goes out.
Durant the week this new store has enjoyed a good patronage.
Mr. Stevens is very well pleased at his reception, and will continue to offer great inducements to get people acquainted with his store.
Everyone is cordially invited to visit the store at any time. The prices and service are sure to please.
