Bledsoe Arrested

Arrested Here For Wife Murder

R. L. Morgan, chief of police of Colgate, came to Caddo Sunday with Jack Droke and they went out five miles southeast of Caddo and arrested R. L. Bledsoe on a warrant charging him with the murder of Mrs. Ada Waller on Boggy near Coalgate in September 1910. The prisoner was brought to Caddo and taken to Coalgate Monday.

Dispatches from Coalgate Tuesday in the morning papers state that County Attorney Wood of Coal County states that Bledsoe had confessed his guilt of the murder.

Bledsoe, while here in irons, made no comment on his case. He made no resistance to the officers, and acted almost unconcerned in the matter. For some time past his principle occupation seems to have been hauling wood and selling it in town, using a small worn-out wagon drawn by a pair of goats. He was unobtrusive and attended to his own business. He lived on the Joe Smith place and farmed a little.

Three and a half years ago the headless body of a dead woman was found in a sack in Boggy creek near Coalgate. The head was never found. Although officers for months worked on the case and scoured the country for the missing woman, no hint of the identity of the headless body was found until a daughter of Mrs. Waller two weeks ago declared she believed the woman was her mother. It was with the murder of this woman that Bledsoe is charged. Dispatches also state the excitement over the matter is high in Coalgate.

Bledsoe Penalty is Electrocution

At Coalgate last week District Judge Rainey accepted a plea of guilty of Jim Bledsoe, charged with the murder of a woman near Coalgate some three years ago, and sentenced him to be electrocuted July 2^nd.

Judge Rainey sated that the confession of Bledsoe showed one of the most atrocious crimes in the state. He knocked the woman in the head with a chair, carried her body to the woods, took an old rough hatchet and hacked her head from her body, placed each in a sack, threw them in the river, and returned home and began to live with the woman’s daughter. Bledsoe killed the woman because she was jealous of her daughter who she thought was becoming intimate with Bledsoe, who declared that he had never been married to either of the women.

The woman and her children are in a deplorable condition and it is thought that the children will be taken in charge by the state and sent to one of the orphan homes.

(can’t read next line) ever was an occasion where the death penalty should be allowed to stand that this was one of them as it was the worst case that ever came under his observation. Under the present system of Governor Cruce the man will receive a life sentence instead of paying the penalty under the terms of the court, and will spend the remainder of his life in the state penitentiary.

Klan Man Speaks to Large Crowd Monday

At the Baptist Tabernacle in Caddo Monday night Rev. John A. Tabor of Dallas delivered his famous lecture on Americanism to a very large crowd. All seats were filled, the benches from the church were placed and filled, and hundreds stood throughout the two hour and a half discourse.

None seemed to tire, so interested were they in what he had to say and the way he said it. He was witty, pathetic, powerful, and eloquent.

His defense of the Ku Klux Klan was superb, showing how they stand for pure homes, the church, the constitution, the upholding of law and order, and defense of pure womanhood.

He spoke of a great many evils in this country that should be corrected, and which the Klan proposes to correct; one of them is ignorant immigration from other countries which compels free American labor to compete pauper labor. He favored closing the door of immigration until the immigrant could speak our language and understand and approve our institutions.

Many out of town people were present, Durant, Kenefick, Bokchito, Bennington, and Caney being well represented.

He delivered this lecture last Friday and Saturday nights at Durant and will speak at Kenefick Monday night.

Ordinance No. 74

An ordinance granting Amos K. Bass of Caddo, Ind. Ter., his associates or assigns, a franchise to build and operate a system of waterworks in the incorporated town of Caddo.

Be it ordained by the town council of the incorporated town of Caddo:

Sec. 1. That Amos K. Bass, his associates or assigns, are hereby granted the right, privilege and franchise to construct, operate and maintain a complete system of waterworks in the incorporated town of Caddo.

Sec. 2.  That for the said purpose the said party or parties are hereby authorized to place under the streets, alleys, and public places of the said town all mains, pipes, and other such apparatus as may be necessary for the construction, maintenance and operation of such system of waterworks provided the free use of any such street, alley, or public place by the public shall not be unnecessarily obstructed, interfered with or impaired.

Sec. 3. That right, privilege, and franchise herein granted Amos K. Bass, his associates, or assigns shall continue for a period of forty (40) years, according to the terms of this franchise and the exclusive use of the streets, alleys and public places for the said purpose and length of time is hereby granted to the said party or parties.

Sec. 4. That actual work of sinking necessary wells to supply water for said system of waterworks shall begin within ninety (90) days from the date hereof and the said system shall be constructed, completed, and in operation without unnecessary delay and within the months from the date hereof. If not then in operation, the right privilege and franchise herein granted may be by the town council deemed and declared forfeited.

Sec. 5. That the pipes, mains, apparatus, etc. used in the construction of the said system shall be modern, safe, and convenient and shall be of sufficient size, etc. to furnish a pressure adequate for fire protection, provided such service is desired and contracted for by the incorporated town of Caddo.

Sec. 6. That the said Amos K. Bass, his associates or assigns shall supply the residents, inhabitants, business or other establishments of every kind and nature, and incorporated town of Caddo within the limits of said town, with water in such form and manner as my be from time to time required, and at such rates as may be agreed upon by the said Amos K. Bass, his associates or assigns and the town council of the incorporated town of Caddo. In the fixing of such rates consideration shall be given to the cost of installing and maintaining said system of waterworks together with rates charged for similar services in like towns under similar circumstances, it being understood that the said town council shall have power and authority to provide the manner and method in which the said rates shall be considered and fixed.

Sec. 7. That the said Amos K. Bass, his associates or assigns shall at all times keep sufficient water in the mains, pipes, and towers to supply the needs of the people and business establishments within the town of Caddo, and furnish sufficient pressure for fire protection.

Sec. 8. That failure on the part of Amos K. Bass, his associates, or assigns, to operate the said system of waterworks in full accordance with the terms hereof for the space of three months shall be deemed a surrender of all rights, privileges, or franchise granted by this ordinance.

Sec. 9. That during the life of this franchise no person or persons other than Amos K. Bass, his associates, or assigns shall lay any pipes or mains for the purpose of maintaining a public waterworks system on any of the streets, alleys, or public places within the incorporated town of Caddo on which the said Amos K. Bass, his associates or assigns have laid such pipes, mains, etc.

Sec. 10. That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after the passage and publication and the filing in the recorder’s office in the town of Caddo by the said Amos K. Bass, his associates, or assigns, his or their acceptance of this franchise, together with a receipt showing payment of the costs of the publication of the ordinance.

A Few Improvements

R.T. Lynch has erected a business house on Buffalo Street adjoining Smith & Swinney’s Drug store, which he has partitioned into offices that will be occupied by Attorney Rappolee and Drs. Bryan and Rappolee.

Dr. Long and Attorney Homer are building business houses on the north side of Buffalo Street.

D. McCoy is having two business houses erected each 22x40 feet. He will also erect two business houses on the west side of Main Street each 24x60 feet. These are to be completed before the first of April.

Contractor Matthews has commenced the building of a large dwelling for Captain Lyle which he says will be the finest house in Caddo.

W.J. Moon is improving his residence lot on Bois d’Arc Street; Mr. Belote, Ben Boydston and O.P. Boyd are improving their residence lots.

Mr. Emerson Folsom has completed his house in the Harlan addition, which his family now occupies. G.A. Pate and W.G. Ward are having dwelling houses built in the Harlan addition.

Mesdames Hunter and Dwight and Mr. King have purchased lots and will soon commence building.

Photographers Clinkscales and McDonald both occupy new dwellings. Mr. Hamer is building two houses on his lot, one for a residence and one for a blacksmith shop.

Local News

Taken up- a red and white cow, dehorned, branded X on the left side; two underbits in right ear, underslope and crop off the left ear. Owner can have same by proving property and paying expenses. T. M. Benefield, on the Booker farm 2 ½ miles west o f Caddo.

The Clifton Medicine Co. have been holding down the boards at the opera house all week. They charge a small admission and sell medicine. The show that is put on is clean, and of a better class than the ordinary medicine show, the only objection being that the actors work entirely too slow. They also have on a gold watch voting contest which is to end Saturday night.

Wednesday the class of Mrs. I. T. Underwood spent the day in the Caddo Hills. The young folks enjoyed very hugely, this, their first outing of the season. The day being April Fool’s Day, the school thought it would fool everybody, including themselves by a holiday. The children returned yesterday to their work much refreshed, but wishing every day was April Fool’s Day.

Dr. Charley Lynch and wife arrived from Chicago Sunday and spent several days here, the guest of the doctor’s brother, R. T. Lynch. Dr. Lynch lives at Mayhew, but left several months ago to take a post –graduate course in medicine at Chicago. On New Year’s Day he was married at Kansas City and many of his friends are just now learning of the happy event. They left Wednesday for their home at Mayhew, or Boswell. (Note: R.T. Lynch was shot and killed just a few months later.)

Excitement was intense at the depot last Sunday afternoon. Just as the fireman was clanging the bell to start the north bound passenger and the conductor gave the engineer the highball, a man who had just gotten off was exhibiting Denison whiskey in a very careless way, both within and without. An Indian policeman standing near immediately spilled all the liquor in sight and the man meandered down the street. When last seen he was in south Caddo.

Rev. Price and Family Honored with Dinner

The members of the Methodist church entertained with a covered dish dinner and reception Monday evening honoring their pastor, Rev. J. D. Price and family who are leaving Caddo soon, as Rev. Price has decided to attend Southern Methodist University next year.

Mr. and Mrs. Gecks were in charge of the entertainment and were assisted by the members of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. A number of games were played after which Mrs. Washington, on behalf of the W. S. C. S. presented the honorees a pair of beautiful blankets. About one hundred guests were in attendance.

 

Teachers and Officers Given Dinner Thursday

Teachers and officers of the Baptist Church enjoyed a four-course dinner at the annex Thursday evening at 7 o’clock. Rev. Kirk was speaker of the evening.

Mrs. Adair and Miss Pauline were presented with a going away gift.

Twenty-one teachers and officers and children and Rev. and Mrs. Kirk were present.

 

Shower Given for Mrs. Virgil Cargill

Mrs. Mary McKinney and Mrs. Nina Faye Taylor entertained at the community building with a pink and blue shower, honoring Mrs. Virgil Cargill. A number of contests were held, after which the honoree was presented a number of nice gifts. Mrs. Cargill thanked the ladies, after which punch and cake were served to twenty-five guests.

 

W. M. U.  Held Meeting June 1^st

W. M. U.  met June 1^st in the home of Mrs. M. G. Downing with Mrs. Faulkner, Mrs. Pinson, Mrs. Ruel Choate, and Mrs. Downing hostesses.

Miss Keith was leader.

Topic for the meeting, “Train Workers for the World Missions”.

Bible study from Math. 11 and 28.

Those on program were Mrs. Cochran, Mrs. McGraw, Mrs. Hendrix, Miss Keith, Mrs. Coy Boydstun, Mrs. B. Jones, Mrs. Guy Choate, and Mrs. Booker.

Lovely refreshments were served to twenty-three members and five visitors.

 

Joe Meadows and Miss Kathleen Jones Married

Mr. Joe Meadows and Miss Kathleen Jones were married in a double ring ceremony Tuesday evening, June 1^st in the parlor of the Presbyterian Church in Durant with Rev. Frank Taylor, pastor, performing the ceremony. Mr. Max Meadows, of Sherman, brother o f the groom acted as best man. Mrs. Max Meadows was matron of honor.

After the ceremony a reception was held. Mrs. Ray Mayfield, sister of the groom, presided at the punch bowl.

Mr. Meadows son of Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Meadows,  Caddo, is in the grocery business in Caddo.

Mrs. Meadows, daughter of Mr. Leonard Jones of Amarillo, Tex. is employed as dietician at Austin College, Sherman.

The couple left immediately for a trip to the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas.
