For the past ten years this scribe has labored to make our place a bird refuge, and began to think we would accomplish our aim, but the nimrods have raided our pets until it looks like they are in danger of extermination. Too bad, for our farms will be desolate indeed if the bird life is taken away, but boys will be boys and we can do nothing about it. The worst part is some men who should put away such childish and cruel sports are worse than the boys because they are the better marksmen. We wonder if it would be possible to persuade these nimrods to desist their ruthless slaughter, and help us to make this community lively with the song birds. Last spring we had 13 mocking birds nesting on and near our premises, also bluebirds and wrens galore, but now we rarely ever see one of the feathered tribe. Paul said: “When I was a child I thought as a child and acted as a child, but when I became a man I put away the childish things.” Neighbors, won’t you join me in protecting the bird life of our community? Birds are our friends and but for them the insects would despoil us. Such conduct by grown men reminds me of Hitler sending his army of destruction in a defenseless nation like Poland or Denmark and dropping bombs on defenseless children. Our pets are as defenseless as they, and have no way of resistance. They cannot fight back and it is a heartless cruelty to murder the little things.

No rain yet, and this is the 13^th of October. (We had one that day, brother!)

Roy Springer and family visited J. L. Springer Sunday. He has land interests near Boggy Depot and was looking after his interests there. He brought back a jug of crude oil taken from the well over there. It is the genuine article if only it is in paying quantities.

Our winter school will be a week old when this is printed. We anticipate a successful session. The Caddo school bus comes right to our door for the pupils who passed the eighth grade last term. That brings us closer to town than before. Rufe Bolts

Mrs. Lyle Dies

Mrs. J. B. Lyle died at her home in Caddo Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock after a long illness. The remains were buried in Caddo Cemetery Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hotchin, pastor of the Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Lyle is survived by a son and daughter, Edgar Lyle and Miss Francis Lyle. She was about 85 years of age.

Mrs. Lyle came to Caddo about thirty years ago and has lived here ever since. She was loved by all who knew her. Mrs. Lyle had vivid recollections of the Civil War, having married Capt. Lyle during the four years’ conflict.

Miss Alice Y. Lee, a Chinese girl of San Francisco, a graduate of the American Institute of Banking, is the first of her race to become a banker in California.

Mme. Daw Hmee Khin, bachelor of laws, is the first woman to be appointed a judge in Burma.

Mrs. J. J. Jaranowaki, who had previously devoted herself to her duties as a housewife, was recently appointed a recorder of Cook County, Illinois, at a salary of $9,000 a year.

Mrs. Roscoe Vaughn, of Wichita, Kan.  is the first president of the Women’s Aeronautical Association.

Mrs. Ada B. Clodfelter is mayor, postmaster, and station agent at Garber, Mo.

Mrs. J. C. Plowman and Mrs. R. V. Denman, twin sisters of Enfield, Eng. celebrated their golden weddings on the same day.

Mrs. Esther Herndon, 103 of Bromwich, Eng. has been a widow 83 years.

Florence De Villier traveled from South Africa to Philadelphia to have removed a paper clip which had been in her lung for 12 years.

Mrs. Jane Madeville of Port Crane, N.Y., will cast her first vote on her 99^th birthday, thereby laying claim to being the oldest new voter in the country.

 

Center Hill Church Cemetery

There are lots of little cemeteries hidden away in the woods around Bryan County and I recently visited this one near Kenefic. It is very pretty and well kept. If you need information you can go to Find A Grave  or contact me.

Prof. J. J. Scarborough left Thursday with his excellent family for Sherman where they will spend the summer.

J. M. Joyce, after spending a week with is son, A.C. Joyce, returned to his home at Franklin, Texas, Monday.

J.N. Jackson has purchased the meat market of Ellis & Braudrick. He invites his friends to come and see him.

J. V. Hardin left Wednesday to spend a fortnight among his old friends at Amarillo, Texas. His parents also live there.

Miss Daisy O’Neal of Wapanucka, who has been visiting her friend Miss Gertrude Thompson, returned home Tuesday.

C. L. Smith came over from Ardmore to visit his brother, I. L. Smith and attend the races. He purchased some horses.

By their dinners given last Friday and Saturday in the Moon building, the ladies of the Presbyterian Church cleared $65.

Judge Bryant, Tom Randolf, J. G. Davis, and Wm. McBride from Sherman were here Wednesday enroute to Gov. Jones’ funeral.

Bishop Lane of the Colored Methodist Church will occupy the pulpit of his people in Caddo Sunday. Everyone is invited to hear him.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Joels of Denison, B. Schlosberg of Durant, and A. and I. Lipshitz of St. Louis, were the guests of Ben Siegel in Caddo Monday.

S. C. Hieronymous was in town from Boggy Depot Wednesday. We were very glad to meet hm. He promised to send us in occasional news items.

The canning season is nearly here. Remember I have several gross of fruit jars and jelly glasses. My prices are pleasing to you. J. F. Lamb

At his ranch twenty miles east of Caddo, Ex-Governor Wilson N. Jones died Tuesday evening at 4 o’clock after an illness of several days. He was possessed of considerable property, and had been governor of the Choctaw Nation a number of terms. For the past several years he had made his home at Sherman, Texas and had many friends there who regret his demise. He had come to his ranch a week or so ago where he was taken ill. All that friends and loving relatives could do was done to save him, but death was inevitable. His sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire Choctaw nation, a host of dear friend s and The Herald. His funeral occurred at his family burying ground near his ranch Wednesday evening . Many friends from Caddo and a distance attended.

The young people of Caddo and several visiting couples chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Hancock, enjoyed a most delightful hop at the opera house Tuesday night.

The band boys went to Coalgate Tuesday to play for the Fourth of July picnic at that place. These boys, under the teaching of Mr. Wheeler, are learning to play well.

I.P. Smith went to South McAlester yesterday to attend the meeting of the retail hardware dealers for the Indian Territory. The organization will be completed and officers elected.

M.L. Hickman returned this week from a trip to the Chickasaw nation; while absent he was at Tishomingo, Ocona and several other towns. He reports favorable prospects for good crops.

We will have quarterly meeting at Pleasant Hill on the 3^rd Sunday of July. Everybody come. About 9 miles from Caddo, two miles from Caney. C. M. Armby

Dr. N. P. Keen and Misses Edna Butler and Ollie Adams were in the city Monday from Bokchito. Miss Butler was enroute to Cooper, Texas to visit relatives and friends. (note: Dr. Keene and Miss Ola Adams were later married in September.)

For sale: One four-room residence on Arkansas street; has two good wells, a barn, etc. is situated on a desirable lot. Will sell for one half of what it cost. F. N. Varney

Misses Annie Edwards, Virgie Dulin, Nellie Stanfield and Mannie Henderson visited friends in Durant Monday and intended to witness the ball game between Durant and Sherman but there was no game.

The new desks for the __me school arrived Saturday, and have been installed in the school buildings. They are models of elegance and convenience and make it better for the children.

Dr. Street of Riddle and Street, the South McAlester oculists, will be in Caddo two days next week beginning with Thursday Oct. 24^th. He can be consulted at Wood’s drug store.

Thursday night somebody’s friend stole from my barn a sack of bran. Now please be my friend long enough to bring it back and oblige. N. Miller

Just received fifty rolls of new patterns for wallpaper, which will be sold very cheap, considering quality. Borders are now the same price per roll as wall paper and ceiling. W. P. Wood

The new M. E. Church south is assuming some proportions. It will have a width of 50 feet and to a lot depth of 42 feet. It is modern in shape and will be a handsome building when completed.

 LeRoy Farrington living five miles northeast of Caddo, died last Sunday of appendicitis. The remains were interred in the Caddo Cemetery Monday. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss.
