Liberty News
Cy Grizzle takes the Tulsa World, and he was reading about the Oklahoma Tax Dodger’s union being organized on the 20th of October at Tulsa and he was telling us boys about it and Lafe Dudd said, we ought to organize one here at Liberty, for if there ever was a people that ought to dodge their tax, the farmer was it; so we went into conference right away and soon got organized in fine shape; Rufe Bolts was elected chairman and G. Washington Watt, secretary.
After the preliminaries of organizing was over, the chairman was called on to make the opening address; he spoke as follows: Brother Tax dodgers of Liberty, our meeting together is both timely and prudent, for if there ever was a time that people ought to dodge their taxes, that time is now; none of us have enough money this year to live on and nothing to pay tax with and if we can devise some plan to dodge our tax we have accomplished something worthwhile. The first thing for us to do is to find out how to proceed in order to accomplish results, so that we can successfully dodge our taxes. I will suggest that we request brother Cy to write the Tulsa World and ask them to send...(line left out). Get busy at once and do the work before us. Then Cy gets up and says, “Brother Tax Dodgers, I have a copy of the World her e and it gives us a starter; it says if Governor Murray’s seven amendments carry, we will have a ‘ell of a time dodging taxes and the thing for us to do is to throw every obstacle possible in the way of those amendments.”
Then Lafe Dudd gets up and says, “Mr. Chairman, I am heartily in favor of all that has been said and done and I am willing to do anything in my power to carry out anything that will work, but I want to know what in the ‘ell an obstacle is.” Well, the chair could not tell him, so we asked G. Washington Watt (he is the teacher and he said an obstacle was an indefinite object, anything that would obstruct; but that did not give us any more light on the subject, for obstruct is almost as big a word as obstacle). Then Drew Dobbs got up and said, “Mr. Chairman, I move that we lay all our motions under the table and have our secretary to write to headquarters at Tulsa to find out what is the meaning of that word obstacle; they say they have employed a very smart lawyer to direct us in our efforts at tax dodging; maybe he will know what it means and then we will know what to throw in the way of those amendments; his motion carried and we adjourned to meet again as soon as we could hear from headquarters. Flu
The flu situation in and near Caddo seems to be worse than the first epidemic. So far the fatalities seem to be few, considering the number of cases. How so many people contract the disease and how to combat it seems to baffle the best skill the world knows. The local doctors have had splendid success in keeping down the fatalities- their treatment seems to be all that anyone can desire. But how to prevent its spread seems to be the worst feature.
