Liberty Items (written by my great-grandfather)

School will commence at Liberty Hill Monday July 21.

Elder T. L. Ward preached at Liberty Sunday evening; the crowd was small owing to the hot weather. Only a few came out; someone suggested that the populace was due to land in a hotter place than Liberty for letting a little hot weather interfere with their attendance at church. Be that as it may, it don’t keep people from dreading to doll up and face the hot sun.

John Lane was Miss Daisy Allen’s escort Sunday evening and Gene Willis was with Miss Idalla Long.

C. W. Banta and wife of Wewoka and Miss Iolene Lowery, also of Wewoka, spent a few days with C. W. Banta of Liberty last week.

Arch Stewart and wife of Oklahoma City visited W. R. Snow last week. The thresher is making its annual round of the Liberty oat fields this weekend. The people are very busy.

The young folks had a merry goround at Roy Childers last Saturday night.

Ernest McCreary is moving back to Liberty Thursday of this week. We wish he would bring with him a dozen or more as good citizens as he is.

Mr. Editor- after reading your big fish story of two weeks ago, this scribe sallied forth to try his luck at angling. After spending two days and a night on Boggy he landed one fish that could be mailed across the United States under cover of a two cent postage stamp. If we could prove that your fish tale exaggerated in the least we would be tempted to sue for damages. Did you spit on your bait? Rufe Bolts

A Sad Circumstance

Sunday morning the Baptist church of Caddo issued a formal (call) to Rev. Upton of Coalgate to be their pastor and he accepted, to begin this week.

Monday all the plans suddenly changed when Rev. Upton died of heart failure. The funeral was held in Coalgate Wednesday.

Rev. Upton was a good man and excellent preacher and no doubt his Caddo pastorate would have resulted in much good.

Two Women and Two Men Murdered and Burned Near Atoka

On Saturday evening, 1th inst., an Indian came into Atoka and stated that about four miles from town, out on the open prairie, he had just witnessed a deadly conflict between several persons who were about a mile away from where he stood. Several citizens immediately repaired to the place and found four persons murdered, two women and two men. After the commission of the terrible deed the tall grass had been set on fire and two of the bodies were burned beyond the possibility of recognition. The others were found to be whites. They had all been shot from the front and were lying on their backs. Up to this writing there is no clue to the terrible deed, further than that about nine miles from the scene of the tragedy a teamster reports having met three men riding very fast and their horses nearly tired down. The motive is supposed to have been robbery. We anxiously await further developments and will lay them before our readers as soon as received.

Pleasant Hill School

First Grade

In our grade we have 15 pupils. All are studying hard to make the honor roll. Earl Herron and Lee Sweet were absent two days last week due to the rainy weather. Wallace Brooks made the honor roll.

Second Grade

We have a new pupil in our grade, Gussie Mae Lackey. Billie Gene Ballard and Lois Paterson made the honor roll.

Third Grade

We still have 7 in our class. Alfred Hardage was absent Friday. Norma Wright and Fay Hayes made the honor roll.

Fourth Grade

We have 11 in our grade. Junior Barnett and Inez Patterson made the honor roll.

Fifth Grade

We lost one pupil in our grade, Christine Wright. We are all studying hard. We are making notebooks in arithmetic and have drill books in geography. Christine Wright made the honor roll.

Sixth Grade

We lost Jim Wright in our class. Raymond Herron is librarian this week. Jim Wright and Curtis Smith made the honor roll.

Seventh Grade

We have a new pupil in our class, Allen Marshel. We are always glad for new pupils even though we are crowded for our seats and books are scarce. Glenn Barnett made the honor roll.

Eighth Grade

We have our arithmetic notebooks up to date. We have almost finished our readers. Those interested in the spelling contest are Aldon and Glen Barnett and Norma Freeman, Mary Higgins. We are studying hard to try to make the honor roll.

General Items

Our boys’ basketball team played Cobb Saturday night and the scores being 11-10 in our favor. We played Matoy Hi Saturday and Mr. Rose played with our boys and the score was 19-19. We want to play the tie off.

Killingsworth Burned by Gas Fire Friday Afternoon

T. B. Killingsworth, feed and grain merchant of Caddo, who was badly burned Friday afternoon by a gas explosion near his store, is reported to be progressing satisfactorily in the Madonna Hospital in Denison.

Mr. Killingsworth was burned then when he struck a match in a small outhouse behind his store. A leaky gas pipe had allowed an accumulation of gas to form in a pit in the building. The flame ignited the gas and the resulting explosion blew Killingsworth thru the door and set fire to grass outside. Although partially stunned, the injured man had presence of mind enough to stamp out the blaze, preventing its spread to adjoining buildings.

He was severely burned about the face, chest and arms.

Mr. Killingsworth was taken to the hospital Monday when his condition was believed to be serious. Mrs. Killingsworth came home Tuesday and reported that this progress is satisfactory.

Mrs. Ben Ray Karnes, sister-in-law of Killingsworth, is in charge of the store during his absence.

Klan Not Lawless Letter Explains All

The Herald is in receipt of the following letter, bearing the seal of the Caddo Ku Klux Klan, sent through the mail, and explains itself.

“This is an official announcement of the Ku Klux Klan of Caddo with the official seal affixed. We here and now announce to the public that we have nothing to do with any lawlessness nor anyone using disguise of any kind whatever to intimidate anyone doing a legitimate business provided his business is according to the laws of the land and according to the constitution of the state and nation.

We stand for law and order, the protection of the peace of the community and strictly behind the officers of the law to help them to see that the law is properly enforced.

We are 85 strong and take none but men who are law abiding citizens. We have never sent a letter except it had on it the seal of the Klan, and never will. We are for the church and everything that is good.

Rev. C.W. Mowdy has received a letter from the Caddo Ku Klux Klan enclosing $15 to aid him in his sickness. Also assuring him of their support in his work.

Mr. Mowdy therefore asks us to print this card:
