Malaria Medicine Free

Mr. Bowen representing the State Health Department was in Caddo yesterday in the interest of stamping out malaria. He made a talk in school assembly.

If anyone is suffering from chills and fever, they may get the medicine by applying to their local doctor. If unable to pay for it, the medicine will be free of charge as will also the consultation.

The state is anxious to stamp out malaria and chills and is devoting considerable money toward better health for the people.

If our people will obey the direction of the state health department there will be no need for chills and fever in this section this summer.

Bryan County Cookin'

I just bought three new cookbooks from the wonderful group of ladies at the Bryan County Genealogy Library and Archives. The book includes 255 pages of great recipes, home remedies, beauty advice, and household tips, plus original drawings by Tresa Stagg and photos of historic places in Bryan County. Mary McGuire

Mrs. Mary McGuire died Monday at Rudisill’s

Mrs. Mary B. McGuire, aged 79, died at the home of W. H. Rudisill in Caddo at 2 p.m. Monday, after an extended illness.

Mrs. McGuire was born in 1868 in Georgia, and married in Tishomingo 52 years ago. Her husband preceded her in death in ’41. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church since childhood.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Florence Rudisill of Caddo, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church in Caddo at 2 o’clock Wednesday with the Rev. E. Hotchkin officiating. Burial in Caddo cemetery. 

Mrs. McGuire in her long life in Caddo endeared herself to many people and she will be sincerely mourned by those who knew her.

Jack Rudisill was here for the funeral of his grandmother.

Work Starts on This End of Jefferson Road

Work started Monday on the Highway at the Fish Hatchery. One camp has been established there and another will be made in Caddo near the depot this week and will work south meeting the other crew.

The contractors on this work have the equipment necessary to work well and fast. They have their own teams, tools, and crews. In the matter of employing local men and teams the contractors will use those who can stand up to the work, but the average farm team cannot keep up with the pace set, thus would hinder all the work. Perhaps all who want to will be used in hauling rock and gravel when the work is ready for it.

The road is already rough going where they are at work, and in time it may be necessary to go round. The best detour is by Kenefick. But we can afford a little inconvenience is we get a good road permanently.

Jefferson Highway Revisited

Mike Conlin and his friend, Gary, came through Caddo today on their way to New Orleans. They are traveling along as much of the original Jefferson Highway as possible. I've written about the highway before and you can also get information at the two links below. I was very pleased to show Mike and Gary around Caddo and guide them to the Caddo Cafe for lunch. They couldn't stay too long. Mike promised his wife he'd be home Thursday for her birthday!

Explosion

Three Men Hurt in an Explosion at Locker

Paul Jenkins, owner of the new frozen food locker plant, and a pair of men were severely hurt Tuesday morning when a freeze fluid tank exploded as workmen were attempting to weld leaks in the tank.

Frank Miller, night watchman, standing close by, was sent several feet sprawling.

The locker plant was about ready to go to work when leaks developed that had to be fixed.

For champion hard luck Paul has had his share on account of materials scarcity and other by-products that produce trouble.

Billy McGrew

Remains of Billy Dean McGrew Buried Friday

Funeral services were held in the Nazarene Church Friday at 3pm for Seaman Second Class Billy Dean McGrew who lost his life on Bougainville in 1943.

The Rev. B. P. Roberts, a former pastor, conducted the service assisted by Rev. Thomas J. Edmonds, present pastor. Pall bearers were his classmates in high school.

Billy Dean was born June 14, 1925; the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. McGrew. He attended Caddo schools and enlisted in the Navy while a senior in high school.

He was killed in action Dec. 18, 1943 of Bougainville, fighting the Japanese.

He is survived by his parents, one brother Joe Charles, three sisters, Mrs. Verna Mae Kitchens, Miss Ida Sue, and Miss Bobbie Dale McGrew of Caddo.

 

Bus Accident, 1946

23 Injured in Bus-Truck Head-On Collision at Armstrong Saturday

Rena Gatlin, aged 12, died in a Durant hospital 24 hours after being hit by a southbound Greyhound bus at Armstrong Saturday morning when the bus was hit head-on by a Hale-Halsell truck traveling north.

Injured numbered 23, one of them being M. L. Miseheimer of Kiowa, candidate for Congress. He has a broken leg and other injuries. Twelve are in Durant hospitals undergoing repairs.

Ten were treated for minor injuries and released.

Miss Kaiser, teacher in Caddo schools, was bruised some, but was able to resume her duties at school Monday.

Billy (Betty) Jo Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Simmons of Caddo, was quite seriously hurt, and is yet in the hospital.

Mrs. Harve Dillard of Liberty also was seriously injured.

George Stevens of Armstrong, driver of the truck, suffered internal injuries.

Louis Kasti, of Tulsa, driver of the bus, got a fractured hip.

    Both vehicles were ruined for future use. Maybe some parts to be salvaged, but not much.

Stevens, driver of the truck, turned left across the highway to go to his home near Blue. He possibly did not see the bus as it came south across the bridge. The bus turned right, off slab, to avoid being hit, and struck the Gatlin girl who was visiting her aunt in Armstrong. She was so badly injured that she died.

Both Hale-Halsell and the bus company carry compensation insurance and the loss will run into many thousand dollars, for the death and injured will be recompensed according to severity of injuries.

This was one of those things that could have been avoided if the driver had been looking before crossing the highway.

Sgt. James Hartman Does Important Aircraft Work

An Air Service Command in England: When Berlin reels under the massive air raids by American PT bombers Sgt. James E. Harman of Caddo, Oklahoma shares the credit for another aerial blow to victory.

Assigned to this important Air Service command Ordinance depot, he is helping to rush vital supplies of high explosive bombs to the air forces now supporting allied ground troops advancing in west Europe.

Record numbers of missiles are now falling on Germany as a result of his day and night job speeding the weapons from Air Service Command railheads in England to bomb bays of planes waiting to take off over the continent.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Hartman of Caddo route 3.
