Dead on the Track
Caney, I. T. – August 23- An unknown white woman was found dead on the right of way of the Katy, three miles north of Caney yesterday morning. The woman was struck by some passing train in the night. She was about 40 years of age, dark complexioned with sandy hair streaked with gray about six inches long. She had a heavy growth of beard. As far as can be learned she was traveling south. She wore a gray sunbonnet, black sateen tea jacket, black skirt, black hose and black laced shoes, pretty well worn. There was nothing on the body that would aid in identification.
The unknown dead woman that was found three miles north of Caney yesterday is surrounded with mystery. The general opinion of the United States marshal and Dr. Armstrong who examined the remains are that she was foully dealt with. There were horses tracks coming up to the fence where the corpse was found. The horse had been hitched for some time.
The woman had absolutely nothing on her person by which she could be identified. She had on clean under clothing which looked as though it had been freshly ironed.
There were no marks or scratches on her skirts to show that she had been dragged along the track, but there was something dragged along the track north from where she was found lying on her right side about 800 feet.
A small dagger stick has been found by the track where the corpse was lying, which may furnish a clue to her identity.
The remains were buried by the charitable people of Caney last night.
